I ordered the £9.95 "Meal Deal" of Risotto, but this had to be the best Risotto I've ever eaten. Other family members ordered a plate of prawns, smoked salmon and soup (£10.95), and a rarebit and soup (£6.95). We shared a cheese platter (£8.50) for dessert. Every bite was exquisite. Our server, Huw, also deserves high praise. He understands fine dining, met our every need, and deserved a nice tip, which we were more than happy to leave.

The owners are wonderfully helpful and friendly, and do a fantastic full English (which is included in the price). Absolutely furious with this hotel when we arrived on Sat 17 April…read more I phoned The Helmsman 2 days ahead of our trip to see my Grandfather (who recently had had a stroke and was based in the nearby hospital - just a short walk from the hotel). I didn't want to be wandering the streets that day with my 6 month old baby and partner. It was the one thing I had control of to organise knowing that we would be tired and I would be emotional - seeing my Grandfather. I am also a leaner driver and was going to be driving up to Aber from Pontypridd. We were running late (I said I would be there around 12ish) and arrived at the hotel at 15:10 I approached the hotel and spoke to a gentleman in the garden. He said - "oh - I have let the room". As you can imagine I was pretty annoyed. He said "I didn't think you were coming and I have literally just let the room" which didn't help. This left us pacing the streets on a hot day with a 6 month old baby - they had my mobile and did not even call me. How's that for service?

The temperatures outside were in the high 20s, but the room did not have any form of air conditioning and so was too hot to sleep. For the price paid I expected something more, at minimum a shower in the room. The overall appearance of the hotel is shabby, and over time has been neglected, to the discomfort of guests, especially those used to more exacting standards. The hotel is centrally located on the seafront, but that did not help as my room did not have a sea view. Breakfast was ok - a cold buffet - but I had paid extra online to have a hot breakfast, but was told at the hotel that this could not be fulfilled. I also saw someone using their own dirty cutlery to help themselves to items from the buffet which made me feel sick. Over all I was disappointed - there have to better places to stay at for the price.
