The main reason for my "maybe" rating needs some context... booking on a Sunday, but having to book a later time than we wanted, which resulted in two of my party of seven not getting their Sunday Roast, due to "no roasted potatoes left". The second reason, seeing at least 3 employees strolling to a table for their lunch break, carrying their Sunday roasts with those "found" roasted potatoes on their plates. Let me remind you that a great business model for restaurants is to "exceed guest (or customer) expectations and make a reasonable profit. No roasted potatoes meant two of your customers expectations were not met. That said, one of the party did received a child Sunday roast. The roasted beef was tough as leather and dry. I ordered the Halloumi salad, which I thought was very good. I enjoyed the pumpkin seeds mixed through. The pizzas are typically very good, which was ordered by 3 of the party. And chicken Caesar salad, ordered by another of the party, was (I think) satisfactory. Service was decent. I'd suggest, if possible, for the party of seven, the food comes out at the same time. It doesn't take much to figure out that a couple of staff can help each other. If they're busy, perhaps a member of management can assist... this would have made it better. Instead, we all waited until everyone got their food. I'm not 100% convinced that we will return, at least on a Sunday. It seems, based of previous visits, Sunday's is hit or miss. The ambiance, in my opinion, is consistent. We Like that it is family friendly. read more

A restaurant-bar endeavouring to cater for the cool media crowed that apparently populate this part of Bristol (it was news to me). Arty in atmosphere, with some engaging art hanging at the moment. The bar's comprehensive, with plenty of organic and local offerings. They've got a relaxed approach to food, doing pizzas, Sunday roasts, and other usuals, some with a bit of a Brazillian twist. It's not quite as hip as it might hope to be, though certainly a much more stylish experience that you'll get anywhere else in Brislington. Pretty large, which is mostly a blessing in this case - you should be able to always get a seat. Boca Bar is an outpost of trendiness on the Bath Road. read more

Bocabar is one of several businesses owned by Umberto, a Brazillian jazz lover, who certainly knows how to make pizza! It occupies an immense space at the entrance of Paintworks, and is a popular restaurant and watering hole for the people who populate this business and creative development, as well as the locals. In addition it can boast a draw from the rest of the city, something that is rare in a place that likes to keep things local. The space is used creatively, with local artists exhibiting there regularly, and live music often on offer. I've been to a couple of gigs there, most notably when Jimmy Galvin played with half of Portishead and Roni Size's rhythem section, where the guys from Tears For Fears were in the crowd, and half of Bristol had turned out... (it was free!) My most relished times at Bocabar are the laid back Sunday lunches, where I amble in with yesterdays Guardian and take root for the afternoon. The food is excellent. Locally sourced, organic wherever possible, and always cooked to perfection. During the summer months I think they intend to replace the Sunday lunches with a BBQ. It's probably wise to call and find out rather than be disappointed. read more

I was invited to this warehouse style, loungy south Bristol favourite one night. There were lots of groups were sat on well-worn sofas with large tables covered in booze glasses and plates of the popular pizza and containers of chips. It seems like a nice spot at all times of the day and for all ages. read more

This was one of the first restaurant/bars I ate at when moving to Bristol. I have now dined here twice. Boca bar (mouth in Spanish) is housed in the cool Paint works site. Situated on the A4 near Totterdown. It has ample parking and can easily be accessed by the numerous buses that pass by here. Various food options are available thoughout the day...Breakfast menu, salads, deli, Sunday roasts and unique freshly made 13" pizzas to die for. There is a large selection of drinks to choose from and I found it a bit difficult to choose which beer to have with my pizza. Food is served either on the comfy sofas or in the seating area situated at the rear. Staff were very friendly, helpful and boxed up our left over pizza to take home :) It's a great place to meet up for an after work drink, special occasion or 1st date coffee. read more

I love this place. Its out of town so plenty of parking, its large and spacious so accommodates big groups and the food is delicious! You can expect to find a range of amazing looking cakes and deli food in the glass counters and a great selection of pizza's to order. The coffee is really good and they serve a reasonable selection of alcoholic beverages. Most days you can expect to find the place teeming with mothers/babies/toddlers meeting friends for coffee and cake and that's exactly what I use the place for. So if you want a bit of peace and quiet then maybe avoid during the day time! read more

This huge bar is housed in a revitalised old shed on the Paintworks site on the Bath Road. Presumably originally intended to appeal to the media industry that is growing in the area, it's since been overrun by yummy mummies and their ever expanding broods. This is presumably because of the sheer size of the place, which allows it to be both a bar and a restaurant, with large tables to the fore and smaller comfy sofa areas scattered around the outside and near the bar. The food is decent enough with an emphasis on (not incredibly cheap) pizzas, though the tapas and mezze plates offer reasonably priced snacks. However, I wouldn't want to stay here for long enough to explore their extensive range of lagers, ciders and ales, as it really does get dominated by stray housewives, especially on weekends. read more

Little sister of Bocanova (RIP), cousin of Boccacinos (RIP), this arty, caffeine-infused warehouse of a place lives on! Situated in the heart of Bristol digital country at the converted Paint Works. I have spent many a languid Sunday munching a particularly tasty brunch, or stone-baked pizza to furnish even the hungriest of stomachs in the evening. The organic beer-supping crowd may be a teensy bit on the pretentious side - this is Brislington folks, not Hoxton! Luckily - Brazilian influenced cool never goes out of fashion - and whether you're a media mogul, a mum or a milkman, Bocabar is worth a nose. read more

I did some work experience at a company based in paintworks and in my rush in the mornings I forgot to make a packed lunch. Bocabar was a saviour for me in terms of filling up my empty stomach but it was hellish for my purse. The décor was arty and the staff friendly, but the food was average and far too expensive for what it was. £8 for a panini and diet coke?er...no thank you! I would never had paid so much for some grub and I only did so because I was so hungry and there was nowhere else around. The Bocaburger was yummy and I would come here with friends for a special lunch...only if I was in the area. read more

People with dietry requirements steer clear!! I have previously spent time at Boca and had no real problems, the issue came with a change in their tapas selections as a query about which items were gluten free... I was quickly told all items 'should be ok' by 2 bar persons both of whom did not fill me with confidence. The main reason being that the item right at the front was cous cous. Now I have been gluten intollerant for the last 7 years and have read up for hours on what I can and can't eat. Cous cous being something I used to enjoy I am fully aware this is something I cannot eat. I queried this with them being told by one staff member that 'cous cous is a grain so will be fine'. Now anyone who is ceoliac or who chooses not to eat gluten will be fully aware that a whole list of grains contain gluten!! https://www.coeliac.org.uk/gluten-free-diet-and-lifestyle/gf-diet/grains/ The bar staffs knowledge is obviously not up to the now required standards around allergens. To add to this when I questioned this (stating I had never been able to eat cous cous previously) they checked with a chef who was close by, he too said cous cous was gluten free!! I worry that if there knowledge around something so obvious is wrong what about the ingredients in their other dishes and also their contamination risks. When the plate arrived they had put bread on the side of the plate!! Surely rule number 1 when a customer tells you they are gluten free they should not put wheat filled bread on their plate! But maybe they didn't realise that was gluten either.  My advice don't risk it Unless you want to make good use of their toilet facilities. read more

Along with the Paintworks creative business village, the 'Boca' has been redeveloped into a bustling, hip and trendy restaurant/bar that is very popular with the local community. The building itself was once one of the Victorian redbrick warehouses, that have been converted into offices all over ths site. Because of this, it sort of lacks a great atmosphere in my book, but it still offers the folk who work on the Paintwork complex a fairly good bar/restaurant and live music venue. The food is quite varied and sort of encompases an eclectic mix of world cuisines. You can get a tapas, posh and expensive salads, burger and chips, pizzas and sandwiches. The prices are quite high to be honest and the service is a little too laid back for my liking, but not a bad place if you live close by or indeed work next door. read more

Personally I love it here. Its been around for a while now so may have changed a little but when I have been its always been awesome. Nice selection of drinks on draught and food isn't bad, I usually have a pizza but I have also had the Sunday Roast which was nice, plus I went in there randomly once and Massive Attack were playing which was a nice surprise for me being an underground music obsessive. read more

This place seems to be slowly going downhill as the table tops get stickier and stickier and the seating gets more and more worn out. When this was a startup I was prepared to accept the bare concrete floor and basic furniture as it was good to have somewhere new in this part of town. But having been here for some time charging at the pricier end of the scale there seems to have been no further investment in it at all. It's basically walking distance for me but these days I just walk past it most times. Pizzas that were good are now mediocre, rest of menu has been very average on recent visits. What was a decent Sunday lunch venue has turned into the local venue for infant screaming contests. With so much competition in Bristol it's hard for me to place Boca as anything more than an also-ran. read more

I do love the atmosphere in Bocabar and sitting outside on a nice day in the sun trap outside is lovely. Food is great, pizza, tapas, bread and oil, olives etc etc but I do agree with some of the previous reviews - food is expensive and service is lacking (the time it takes for food to reach the table). Only been once for Sunday lunch and never again but the pizza is definitely what this place does best. read more

I had wanted to go here for so long so when a friend with a one-year-old suggested we go for early evening supper on a Sunday I jumped at the chance. You can see that the Boca, which is in a lovely old warehouse on the Paintworks site, gets rammed with yummy mummies and screaming kids during the day, but then settles into a relaxed and cool vibe at night. And there's no wonder it's so attractive for parents- big comfy sofas in a huge room where youngsters can just tear around to their heart's content. The main draw here is the incredible range of food they offer though. Gorgeous pizzas made fresh and cooked in an oven in front of you. They are a little pricey but absolutely huge and gorgeous. Then there's an immense salad bar, with really chunky salads on show. And paninis and tapas as well as several chalk boards chock full of specials. The bar is also incredibly well stocked and I found the staff really relaxed and friendly. It's the kind of lazy vibe that is perfect for Saturday afternoons or Sunday evenings. And apparently they often have live acts here too. Perhaps a little pricier than I would like but the vibe and diverse choice of food makes it worth it. read more

Nice place but poor quality food. I've eaten here a lot of times, mainly for convenience and the atmosphere but it is consistently bad food ( and I'm not fussy). I kept hoping it would improve but it hasn't and I won't be eating here again. Service is slow and the staff never seem bothered about customer satisfaction and always have an air of apathy about them. However, it's a chilled out place with good beers and a good place to meet up. It's probably surviving because it has a captive market and little competition. read more
