Little sister of Bocanova (RIP), cousin of Boccacinos (RIP), this arty, caffeine-infused warehouse of a place lives on! Situated in the heart of Bristol digital country at the converted Paint Works. I have spent many a languid Sunday munching a particularly tasty brunch, or stone-baked pizza to furnish even the hungriest of stomachs in the evening. The organic beer-supping crowd may be a teensy bit on the pretentious side - this is Brislington folks, not Hoxton! Luckily - Brazilian influenced cool never goes out of fashion - and whether you're a media mogul, a mum or a milkman, Bocabar is worth a nose.

It is situated very close to the Temple Meads train station and near the IBIS Hotel, but rather difficult to locate if you don't live around the area or already know about it. I'd suggest you google it and hunt it down because it is an awesome little pub. The feel of this pub is cosy, wooden antique-y furniture litted about the place, and a warm fire burning (if the weather is chilly). As this pub is affiliated with the Bristol Beer Factory, the ales on tap are the Beer Factory ales, like No. 7, Sunrise, Stout, Red and usually one guest ale! They are usually about £2.70 - £2.80 - pretty good. Beers on tap here are Fosters, Grolsch and the cider is a lovely fizzy Ashton Press. There is outside seating, as well as a courtyard at the back with a nice sheltered bit for when it starts raining. The food! They pride themselves on good, hearty, fresh and locally sourced food. The vegetarian lasagne and sunday roasts are my favourites here. This pub is just a lovely place to spend hours, having a quiet pint and food, with a book off their bookshelf, by the roaring fire. Loads of games are available here to play with- Downfall, Guess who?, Jenga, Chess....great for the kids and adults too. A venue always filled with the locals - it seems they have kept this pub a little secret very well indeed! Head down here and you'll love this place as much as I do. Guaranteed.

The beer was really good. They had four Bristol beer factory beers (they usually have a guest too). I had their Acer, one I know and like already!

It's quite a small pub and while it lacks a decent size for big groups it makes up for it with cozy character. On entry there is a pateoed garden complete with pub benches and what looks to be a stone bake pizza oven which I guess would be great for summer. I'd chosen the Volunteer for my team at work's Christmas dinner as it was a convenient short walk from my place of work in Temple Quay (next to Temple Meads) and i'd heard great things about the quality of the food and service. We had a table of 10 which took up a large portion of the pub, the service was very friendly, can't fault the table service provided. The food was excellent. Starters consumed were pigeon, leak and onion soup and crab thermidor. The hit of the starters appeared to the the pigeon. The Christmas dinner on offer was excellent. Not just first class pigs in blankets but devils on horse back as well (prunes wrapped in bacon). My overall review of the roast on offer is that it's a no nonsense well executed roast dinner that definitely should be a consideration for a good roast in central Bristol. I played it safe for the 3rd course and went for the cheese board, which was also great. All your cheese & cracker classics accompanied with a curry style chutney, pickled onions and capers. There is a good selection of drinks on offer as well. The barman was more than happy to give some advise on the extensive range of ales on offer! All in all a great time had at the Volunteer. I'll definitely be heading back for a Sunday roast at some point and maybe see how it fairs up in the summer as well!
