Situated outside of the hustle and bustle of the city centre, the kind of crowd you'll find here is the one that loves a descent pint of beer and an evening spent with friends. It can be quite difficult to get a seat here, so it's not a great place to take someone who hates standing with a drink. The King's Head will give you a little slice of history and take you back to a time when not every pub was a chain, and when reasonable prices weren't a rarity.

However, the reason I really hate this place is the rudeness of the staff. The one time I drank in here, the landlady insisted on kicking me and a friend out dead on 10.30pm on a Sunday night, despite happily selling me two full pints at 10.25pm. Something tells me she knew her pub was a shithole and couldn't even be bothered to try and pretend otherwise.

For those familiar with the brand; they have most of the usual offenders on tap and the rest in bottles or cans, my favourite being punk IPA, which is just gorgeous on tap. My one criticism (but its just me nitpicking) is the size of the venue, again its usually always busy, which is good, so would be nice to see it expand some day to make room for more seating or something... We promptly left, since A) we felt as though we may as well have just walked into someone's living room and B) an audible conversation wouldn't have been possible due to the racket emanating from both the punters and the TV. It's quite a small pub and while it lacks a decent size for big groups it makes up for it with cozy character. On entry there is a pateoed garden complete with pub benches and what looks to be a stone bake pizza oven which I guess would be great for summer. I'd chosen the Volunteer for my team at work's Christmas dinner as it was a convenient short walk from my place of work in Temple Quay (next to Temple Meads) and i'd heard great things about the quality of the food and service. We had a table of 10 which took up a large portion of the pub, the service was very friendly, can't fault the table service provided. The food was excellent. Starters consumed were pigeon, leak and onion soup and crab thermidor. The hit of the starters appeared to the the pigeon. The Christmas dinner on offer was excellent. Not just first class pigs in blankets but devils on horse back as well (prunes wrapped in bacon). My overall review of the roast on offer is that it's a no nonsense well executed roast dinner that definitely should be a consideration for a good roast in central Bristol. I played it safe for the 3rd course and went for the cheese board, which was also great. All your cheese & cracker classics accompanied with a curry style chutney, pickled onions and capers. There is a good selection of drinks on offer as well. The barman was more than happy to give some advise on the extensive range of ales on offer! All in all a great time had at the Volunteer. I'll definitely be heading back for a Sunday roast at some point and maybe see how it fairs up in the summer as well!

You'll never find the Cornubia unless you're either lost or looking for it - Temple Street, these days, is almost a back street, off on the right as you walk from Temple Meads down Victoria Street to the centre. The Cornubia itself is set back from the road, hidden by one of the ubiquitous modern office blocks that populate the area. The pub used to be the hospitality suite of the nearby (and now defunct) Courage Bristol brewery. The building dates from 1783 and has been a pub since the mid 19th century. New landlords took over the pub earlier in the year, hailing from Kent, where their pub previously won CAMRA's Pub of the Year. The pub exterior is a well preserved example of Georgian architecture, in stark contrast to its surroundings. Inside, there is a long bar with a separate room off on the left, with some nice original fittings. The walls are covered with a slowly growing collection of pub clips (or are they beer mats?) of the wide and interesting range of real ales they sell - there are seven pumps - as well as ciders from the barrel. The beers on my visit were beautifully kept, and included Glastonbury's 'Black as yer hat' (4.5%), Slater's 'Why not?' (3.8%) and Forge Brewery's 'Litehouse' (4.3%). They also serve traditional home-made pub food food during the day, in generous portions. Worth looking out for, but beware that, because of the location, opening hours are very restricted at weekends - it's best visited during weekdays.

We were greeted by the most surly, unfriendly barman (more of a bar boy actually) whose first words were 'they can fuck off' To top this off, we were told to 'drop dead' on the way out. To be honest, it's no big loss. They can keep their tacky Union Jack decor and their emo bar staff, I will never frequent this establishment again.
