Pretty large selection of beer here, but it's not the best selection out there. (For that, go to…read moreWillows Market in Menlo Park). The beer turnover here, however, is not very good. I've been here a couple times in the last several months, and I've seen mostly the same breweries and labels (maybe 10% change?). But my biggest issue with Holly Market is the cost - Their prices are the highest I've ever seen in the Bay Area. Four-packs of micro-brew pint cans run about $2 more than they are anywhere else, including Whole Foods. And if you grab a 4-pack of a double or triple IPA, you'll be paying at least $4 more than other places. I asked about this the last time I was here, and the guy said, "Higher alcohol beers are more expensive," which in general is true; but not THIS much more expensive. It seems to me they are using that as an excuse to double their already-high markup. I've actually cancelled more than one purchase here when I saw the actual charge pop-up on the register. (Note: They don't post prices for most beers). I was going to give Holly Market 3 stars, but based on the unusually-high Yelp rating...and abnormal number of 5-star reviews from newbies (We know what that means!) I'll do my part to move the needle in the direction of the real world. Interestingly, the very act of writing this review has made me realize one thing: I'm done with this place.

Dear All: First off,…read more I wanted to thank Ray and his wife (the owners) for all the hard work, kindness and truly wonderful people they are to have in the community. They not only work morning to night, but they have dedicated their lives to being a staple and one the most reliable stores around in all the neighboring cities. Day in and day out they have the highest respect for their customers and welcome each and every individual into their store with love as if they are welcoming someone into their own home. If there ever is a choice to pick which store to shop at or which delivery service app (fees are SO high) to order from, our family will ALWAYS make it a point to support the local "Mom-n-Pop Shops" because of how much happiness and kind human beings Ray and his wife (the owners) are towards the community. I informed the self-checkout associate, but her response was very casual--she simply said I could exchange it, with no apology or concern. When I asked for a manager, she seemed bothered and annoyed. The manager came over and discovered that at least six packages of the same cheese were moldy. This is why I felt the situation needed to be escalated rather than treated as a simple exchange. I was disappointed with the associate's dismissive response and believe additional customer service and food-safety training may be needed. Thank you

Unfortunately, my experience at the meat counter completely changed my opinion. I ordered 1 lb of chicharrón. I usually go to Chavez Market, but I decided to give this place a try. Everything was fine until the employee started cutting the chicharrón into smaller pieces. Instead of using a clean cutting board, he placed a piece of paper over a cutting board that had just been used for raw meat. While cutting, a large piece of my chicharrón rolled off the paper and touched the raw meat sitting next to it. He quickly grabbed it back like nothing happened, but I clearly saw it. To make things worse, another employee handed him a knife that had just been used on raw meat and simply wiped it off with a towel instead of properly sanitizing it. That is a serious food safety concern. I ended up paying around $15 for food I no longer felt comfortable eating. I really wanted to like this place, but proper food handling and sanitation should be taken much more seriously. I would love to get my money back but im sure they wont honor it.
