Heartland Gondolas - The big boat coming in after a cruise on the lake

Mike, the owner, had told me on the phone that it would be $10 per couple. When we got there our boat driver (who wasn't Mike), told me it was $20 per couple. I informed him that was not what I was told by Mike. He walked about 100 yards away to talk with Mike and then came back to inform me that Mike thought there was only one couple that I booked, but he would go ahead and do it for $20 but I could tell he was super angry. The gentleman (I don't know his name) then proceeded to give us the cold shoulder the whole ride. Wouldn't answer questions unless asked several times and then just gave one word answers. He scowled the entire ride. I felt bad because of the confusion so I apologized again after we got off the boat. He looked away from me as I was talking and drank a big swig of his gatorade and then LITERALLY turned his back on me without a word. My family proceeded to thank him for his time and he didn't acknowledge any of them either. At this point I was furious. No matter how you feel you should never treat people this way. I immediately went over to Mike by the big boat and had a talk with him. Barely did I get my story out when Mike said he completely remembered our phone call and he had told the "boat guide" that our rate was $20 flat. So the boatman LITERALLY LIED TO US and then made us feel terrible and uncomfortable the entire ride with the grand finale of completely ignoring us at the end when I was only 1 foot in front of him. Mike was super nice and asked if I wanted my $20 back. I declined but I want to report this because the gentleman under his payroll was absolutely terrible and needs to be removed. He is most likely trying to scam all of us unsuspecting guests. If I hadn't talked to Mike I wouldn't have found out the truth. This ride would have been an amazing experience if it hadn't had been for the boatman. The view of the city and the fountain are breathtaking. I highly recommend doing a tour at sunset.

They treated everyone including to those working for them like family. To wander around the grounds floor is pretty neat, to see the inside is pretty special. Would recommend especially those passionate for history, designing, and architecture.

The tour starts in one of the grandest rooms in the home and while it is a bit old-fashioned for this digital age, need I remind you that this is a literal castle? What's more old school than that? We visited in late fall so there wasn't much to see in terms of foliage or plant life, I suspect it is even more wonderful in the spring and summer.

According to a story in the Examiner, "Magical Journey's Carriage Service as it is also known, has been in the business of giving dreamy horse and carriage rides to fun-seeking customers since 1978." They have a variety of carriages but the basic model plies the streets and offers visitors and locals alike a great and fun time. I took a ride when I visited recently and I loved it! The trip reminded me of the Cinderella Carriage Company in San Diego that you can ride around downtown and the Seaport Village area. Rides in the carriages range from $20 to $100, depending upon the distance traversed and time spent in the carriage. Usually the rides are slated for the afternoons and days in which the weather allows. You can book online and buy gift certificates also or just wander up to the corner on Howard Street & 11th and wait for the next horse and buggy to show up. It is even more authentic because the horses clip-clop along the quaint brick streets of the Old Market area and you just feel like you are in another time, despite the traffic and congestion around you. Carriages available (according to the Examiner) are singles (seating up to 6 adults), doubles (seating up to 9 people), and a beautiful third style known as the Cinderella Carriage. On the website, the Cinderella Carriage looks so romantic & magical! I know if I was ever getting hitched in Omaha, I would insist upon it for my wedding. 5 YELP STARS for this very cool service in the heart of the Old Market.

My girlfriend and I enjoyed it so much that we jumped at the chance to go again knowing we'd be in Omaha this week. Unfortunately we didn't get the same results this time...I can't even recall the drivers name, but she was the younger gal. We were told (again) that the Grand Finale would be an hour long...it was actually 41 minutes long (I timed it)...I asked the driver at the end if that was a full hour and she said it was ten minutes short...I timed it on my iPhone, it was a 41 minute ride. If you pay $100, you should get what you pay for. Buyer beware! Hold them to what they advertise. I plan on reporting this incident to the appropriate officials tomorrow morning. Very sad considering the service we had before. Hope who ever reading this has a better experience.

We had arrived in…read moreOmaha on a Sunday and was supposed to leave early the following Saturday, so would have missed out since the park only opens on Saturday from 10am-3pm. But as luck would have it, our return flight was cancelled and we were rebooked for Sunday, so that left us the whole day free to check out Freedom Park! You enter through Miller's Landing along the Missouri River and pass through a normally locked gate onto a gravel road. About a mile down, you will see a gray ship off to the right, so you realize this must be the place. The ship is a 530 ton minesweeper that served in WWII at the Battle of Okinawa named the USS Hazard. What's curious is that it is on land and behind it is also a submarine, the training sub, USS Marlin. Both are open for self-guided tours, but there are volunteer docents on board to answer your questions. One of the docents had opened the ship's armory and was showing samples of inert ammunition used by all the gun mounts from the 20mm Oerlikons and 40mm Bofors, all the way up to the 3" main cannon at the bow. It was interesting to see many of the compartments onboard have been restored to their original condition showing how life was during its WWII deployment. On the grounds of the park adjacent to the minesweeper are a lot of navy relics not related to the ship but collected over the years and have seen better days. There are missile launchers, larger guns and even 3 aircraft from the 50's-70's, an A-7 Corsair, A-4 Skyhawk and an HH-52 Coast Guard helicopter. Also interesting is the anchor garden and actual ship nameplates of some famous ships cut from their sterns when they were scrapped. All are in bad shape and disrepair. Funding is limited and only volunteers work here. Plus the Missouri River has flooded this area at least twice, causing a lot of damage and nearly floated the minesweeper away. If you do get a chance to visit the park, be respectful to the history and be generous in donating to keep these historic relics from disappearing. A huge thank you to the volunteers that run this place.

This past week took us from the Des Moines IA metro to Lincoln NE...and then back and forth between Lincoln and Omaha several times. I'd almost forgotten about Freedom Park until one of my fellow travelers mentioned it... The park is free admission and staffed by volunteers. The short drive in is on a gravel road. Do check their Facebook page pior to visiting as the park can close for flooding, the heat (there's no AC in anything there), etc. The current centerpieces of the park are the USS Hazard (AM-240) and USS Marlin (SST-2) along with several other displays and aircraft. It does feel a little weird seeing these vessels sitting way up on dry land... I was a carrier sailor on the USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) so these are small boys comparatively speaking. Lol Some of the exhibits are kept up better than others... Hopefully you don't mind a little peeling paint and some rust. The equipment bears a bit of a resemblance to us old sailors who are showing our age a bit more now too. The labels and available handouts are helpful and great educational tools for the general public. As a former Navy sailor some of my best memories of this little park will be the conversations with it's volunteers. A lot of them are former sailors themselves. Veteran to veteran there is always common ground... Regardless of which service or era.
