I'll keep this in three sections: Professionalism, Instructing and Teaching, and Cleanliness and Safety. Professionalism -At any job, sobriety is expected. The name Tipsy Picasso suggests a drink during class, not running outside to shotgun White Claws with your "homies". It is disrespectful to the people who paid to learn something. This is a job, not a frat house. -Your employee was doing her own art piece while also expected to work. If she is the assistant, she should assist. Instead, she looked as confused as everyone else. -Supplies were a mess. Mosaic pieces were unsorted. Paints were clumped, empty or lacking colors. Grout was not mixed correctly, even though the instructions are printed on the packaging. The whole setup looked rushed and thrown together for quick cash. -I should not have to ask more than twice for basic items. ADHD is not an excuse. Handle requests when they are made. -Anything involving water was a disaster. Grout water was filthy. Paint water looked like chocolate milk. Clean water is basic common sense. Dirty water makes both tasks nearly impossible. -You admitted your samples and guides were written by AI and that you did not read the guides. As an artist, that is embarrassing. As a business owner, it is unacceptable. -Talking about your night out or your loud friend is not professional. I came to learn and complete a project, not listen to personal stories.(She needs to learn the benefit of silence) Instructing and Teaching -A teacher is supposed to teach. I spent hours there and I still do not know when the teaching was supposed to start. -You said these classes are not for type A personalities. That is wrong. You offer a service, so structure is required. Sort the tiles. Prepare examples. Show how a mosaic layout works. Demonstrate grouting. Teach painting techniques. Walk around and give feedback. None of this is complicated. It just requires effort. -Your grout method was wrong. Grouting is simple with the right tools. Smearing it with a gloved hand and wiping with paper towels works, but it looks cheap. A sponge and clean water are standard. -Instruction only happened when someone in the room did something that reminded you to speak. Requests were repeated, ignored, or announced without follow‑through. Talking with your friends seemed more important than teaching. -Saying you are a good teacher does not make you one. We learned nothing and gained nothing. -You talked about going viral more than you talked about art. Use that energy to teach. Cleanliness and Safety -If a class involves tiles and glass, the table should be cleaned before painting so shards are not everywhere. -You gave tools to cut glass but no eye protection. That is unsafe. -Water should be changed regularly for grouting and painting. Your sink was unusable, and the excuse that it was an artist's sink was ridiculous. This is a business. Respect your space and your patrons. -Broken glass and tile pieces were dumped back into the bins of mosaic tiles. Stirring through sharp shards with a popsicle stick is not acceptable. -A dog wandered around while glass was being broken. Check his paws. A little organization, structure, and actual instruction would fix most of this, but none of that matters if you are more interested in hanging out with your friends than teaching. We left with two decent pieces, but we will finish them at home because we have more paint in our house than your studio. We will not return. Buyer beware.

I recently did a "play with clay" class with a girlfriend. It was hosted at the Dodge location in…read morean old bus. The bus is cool! FYI- the bus only holds two guests at a time. It's equipped with two wheels, countertops for the clay, and a small sink for washing. The class is described as an "opportunity to try the potter's wheel with one hour of instruction at our Dodge Studio. It includes 2 hours of Instructed Wheel time and we provide clay, aprons, and tools. You can do this as a fun experience or choose to save pots as a memento. ($5 per piece)." For some constructive feedback- the description or confirmation information should include some further details like recommended attire (which might not be super obvious to everyone), that the 2 hours you pay for also include time for you to clean the bus, like everything- the wheel, water vessels, tools, surfaces, etc. Clay can get messy and we were not aware of the clean up rules until the very end! Informing people in advance is not that hard. Just by including a tidbit about how the co-op operates, their water saving efforts, etc, would set everyone up for clear expectations. For the record, I absolutely agree that a co-op is only as functional as the folks who are partaking in it and I am all for being part of a the full process and respecting it. Neither of us had tried wheel throwing before and it's actually a lot to process and apply in a 2 hour period. Wheel throwing requires lot's of time and patience. Our instructor Eva, demonstrated for about an hour and touched on a bunch of different steps before handing over the wheels to us, and hanging for a bit to guide us through our first attempts. We felt an overall vibe of impatience from our instructor. Questions were met with a tone of "I already told you" or "it's posted on the wall." Another suggestion is to consider hanging some visuals at the front of the bus with the steps in the process. That way, when students are left independently, they can reference them as little reminders, because it's not easy to remember them all at once. We also we very unclear as to whether or not we were limited to the two clay pieces we started the class with, which turns out, we could have pulled more clay from the bag. Again, another opportunity for the co-op and instructors to prep their students/customers for a more seamless experience. How about prep 4 balls per person and see if they even use them all? The clay gets reused anyway. Leaving us there to wonder wasn't ideal. It took several weeks to hear back from them for a pick up notice on our items. We each fired/glazed one. I was prepared to not even get my item after so much time passed. There's room for improvement and it all comes down to information and communication. Would I do this class again? Maybe and perhaps try a different instructor. Overall, if you're looking to try something new and clay is on your mind, I think this is fun option. It was $120 for the class, plus $5 per item we fired and glazed, so not bad.

So I signed up for wheel throwing and hand building classes. These classes are very popular and they fill up quickly. 8 week classes where you come in once a week for 2 hours cost 155.00. You will also have to pay for clay and tools. The instructor was very knowledgeable, however, I feel like I could have learned more. Most of the students in my class had previous experience and did not need as much attention. I want to sign up for another class and maybe I will get much better at it. This painting event was special; at Tandem American Eatery (excellent food - one of our favorites) and a fundraiser for PACC (a favorite charity). Turnout was great, with eighteen participants, and our instructor was cool, helpful, and funny. This was not my first paint and wine time, and I love that the painters are always friendly with their table mates, which really enhances the enjoyment. A plug for Tandem: My friend and I arrived early for dinner before painting. My wings were as big and tasty as they always are and my friend said her bacon blue cheeseburger burger was as delivious as I told her it would be. I brought my stepdaughter, and we were both really excited for a supportive, welcoming learning experience. Instead, we walked into something completely different. Nan, the instructor, seemed unaware of why new people had been showing up for the past two years. No actual class took place. She briefly walked us around the studio, gave a quick 10-minute demo, and then left us entirely on our own. When we tried to ask questions, she was passive-aggressive, dismissive, and made us feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. It was clear the environment was geared toward experienced potters, not beginners. The class was supposed to run from 10am to 1pm, but there was no structured instruction at all. Everyone else in the room knew exactly what they were doing, while we were left confused and ignored. For $90 USD, this was incredibly disappointing. My stepdaughter and I had been looking forward to learning -- instead, we felt talked down to, unsupported, and eager to leave. If you're a beginner or hoping for an actual class, I strongly recommend going elsewhere.
