I am not happy to be writing this review. I have used VSC before, and been pleased with them. However, a string of recent experiences with my beloved pet have stayed with me, filling me with anger at a time I need to stay positive and focused on helping my little guy get better. I feel I need to get this out of myself so I can move on. My complaint is due to the treatment I personally experienced, not the treatment of my dog. We were referred by our regular vet to VSC when our dog had a fever of unknown origin, and the initial attempt with novox didn't improve. After our dog was taken by the technician to the back, something they do whether you like it or not, the internist came in and basically said "I recommend we do this, this, this, this and this." She was just matter-of-fact, direct and ready to act. She said she would have a tech come in with an estimate. Meantime, we could discuss. Well, the tech did come back a few minutes later with that estimate. As he was putting it in our hands he said "So, what do you want to do?" Ummm... read the estimate, for starters. Flat out honesty: We were getting the feeling these people were thinking about the money over the animal. They definitely weren't thinking about how we were feeling - helpless as our family member was hurting, confused by why all these tests were needed, not being given the explanation or answers in a gentle, bedside manner. With trepidation, we went the conservative route. Did three of the five tests, and waited. Well, they weren't the right three tests, of course. We went back a week later, with no improvement. This visit was the last straw. First, when the tech tried to take my dog into the back, I denied her. I said I did not want my dog leaving my sight. Oh, but she had to weigh him, and there was no scale in the room. (How convenient.) Against my better judgment, I said she could take him to be weighed only, but I wanted the doctor to do her physical in here. Five long minutes later a different tech altogether came back with my dog and said the doctor saw him while he was being weighed. Wow... I was absolutely floored. They outright ignored my wishes and right as the client. When the internist came in, I was greeted with the same deadpan treatment. Oh, well no wait... this time the internist spoke to me as if SHE wanted to help my dog, but I didn't. Now, she didn't out right say that, but her tone created an unspoken accusation as if I was not as concerned as she was. That was it. I was done. I was able to get referral to Charleston Veterinary Referral Center in West Ashley, who treated our dog and us wonderfully. I will never go back to VSC. Even if I am in Mt Pleasant and have an emergency. I will travel all the way over to West Ashley for my pet before going here. In hindsight, and this is specifically why I am writing this review: Had we been treated gently, patiently and kindly by the internist and her techs with clearer explanation of why they wanted to do all the tests they wanted to do, we probably would have done them. The treatment we received led us to believe they just wanted to get as much money as they could right at the start. The salt to the wound was the lack of respect for my wishes and the accusatory tone that I didn't really want to help, essentially, my child. I take the blame. Fully. I shouldn't have let my emotions lead my decision making. Kind of hard to not, tho, don't you think? It is important for VSC to understand that the treatment of the human is extremely important to best lead to the proper treatment of the animal. We need to trust in you. We are distraught, nervous, scared and sad over what is happening to our family member. You are the specialist who understands and can help resolve the issue. We need to feel safe giving our pets to you. I did not. read more

Not only are the doctors and staff here HIGHLY skilled and talented, they are also sympathetic, empathetic and patient. They made a difficult visit, tough decisions and unbearable nervousness more than tolerable. There is not one single person in this facility that isn't both incredible smart and incredibly kind. DR. BIANUCCI AND HIS STAFF ARE AWESOME! We had an excellent experience here when our Big Beau needed surgery for a Ruptured ACL of his left rear knee. He is a big dog with very high energy. He can be difficult to handle. They did an awesome job. Each person I encountered was paying attention, acting professionally, very skilled and they were being careful with my animal. I believe animals can tell when they are in good hands and things go much easier for all. Beau knew! Today, we took him for his 6 week X-Ray and he is healed! From Dr. Bianucci whose dedication was incredible and gave us his cel number and encouraged us to call, to the staff member that answered the phone each and every time I called!!! I never once got a voice mail, and I made good use of their phone lines. Whenever I called, I was met with competency and kindness, along with a solution to the problem. I encourage anyone with an Emergency 24 hours a day, or anyone who needs a Surgical Consult to visit Dr. Bianucci and this clinic! read more

The docs and staff are top notch. I am sure my doggie got the best medical care possible. Everyone was informative, professional and helpful. I was always encouraged to call with any questions. We have had the greatest experience both with the ER (the staff and the doctors) and with Dr. Freeman who is now my 9yr old hound's neurologist. We thought we were going to lose him 5 weeks ago due to seizures and now he is doing better than we ever expected. I find their prices to be very reasonable considering we had to get ER care in NC for cluster seizures back in October and paid so much more. Dr. Freeman is always willing to provide advice and recommendations for my pup who has been having some trouble with side effects of his many medicines. She is very skilled & we just love her and her staff. Thank you from all of us! read more

On Monday our dog, Mocha, could not stand up let alone walk..........on Friday he walked out of the front door and has shown the improvement Dr. Freeman told us to hope for! To say this clinic is exceptional does not do them justice...they are beyond that and I would recommend anyone to trust them with the care of their pet. The whole team from the receptionists to the technicians were wonderful and while it is unfair to put one member of the team above the rest it would be remiss to not mention Dr. Freemen. This is the most amazing place! Our french bulldog had a heat stroke and was in really bad shape. The staff worked so hard to take care of him and he survived. Every time we visited the staff was so quick and friendly. They care so much for the animals and really kept us posted. The facility is super nice and the pins that the animals stay in are really nice. I never right reviews good or bad, but just want everyone to know....these guys are the best! read more

We just want to say THANK YOU to VSC for all the love, care and support they gave us. My teacup poodle was diagnosed with a heart murmur and it was suggested that I return her to the breeder. My heart was broken and I could not do that so I received a second opinion and was referred to VSC. What a BLESSING!! From the moment we walked in the door until we checked out to leave I knew we were in the right place. I cannot thank Dr. Jacobson and the staff enough for how they cared for us! Dr Jacobson explained every thing to us in terms that we could understand and he never rushed us at all. This is the place to be if your baby has a problem!!!! I highly recommend VSC. Unfortunately we had to visit them again. When your dog is suddenly having an epic nosebleed late on a Sunday night, your heart may be telling you to drive from Mount Pleasant to West Ashley for a better emergency experience, but your head is telling you to GET HELP FAST. So back to Veterinary Specialty Care and the usual mixed bag/clusterf#@!. The good news - they have fixed the doorbell and we were able to get right in to the building. The young woman at the front desk was barely articulate and in fact walked away from us while we were explaining why we were there, leaving us confused and wondering what was going on. She did return with a very helpful vet tech who luckily took over. After they got the bleeding stopped, we opted to keep our dog there for a few hours so they could keep an eye on him and we paid our bill. When I returned at 3 am to pick him up, I was told that I still owed the amount that I had already paid. I explained that I had already paid (and I am willing to bet that this place NEVER lets anyone walk out the door without paying). More confusion ensued, another employee was called in and it turned out they were trying to print out an invoice. I again explained that since I'd already paid I already had an invoice, had not asked for another invoice, and just wanted my dog. I pulled the invoice out of my purse and magically, my dog appeared a few minutes later. I'm not sure what sort of billing system they use, but obviously it works well for the clinic, since this is the second time in a row that I've had a billing issue. read more

Since my dog wasnt in critical condition they didnt feel the need to take the extra time to assist with him. Doctor came into the wrong room which was only one of my decision in never returning to this facility. I ended up cleaning my own's dog wound because "they didnt have time because their were more pet waiting." Terrible bed side manor, extremely expensive when they didnt do anything for my pet, plus I had to go to CVS to get supplies to take care of his wound on my own. Will never use this facility in the future for any of my pets. read more

I usually don't write reviews but I have to say the folks here are amazing not to mention the facility I bought my lab to them and from the minute I walked in the doors I knew this place was special. I was greeted by a very kind woman and a vet tech came out to meet me right away and whisked Peetie into the exam rooms they made me feel like my dog was there main concern. Our 7 month old Golden was diagnosed with severe hip displysia in October of 2013. We were referred by our Vet to Veterinary Specialty Care. Dr Schlicksup and the rest of the VSC team have been awesome! They genuinely cared for Cooper, and gave us REAL information and let us make the choice as to what we thought was best for Cooper... Not steering us a certain direction. After having Cooper's left hip replaced, they were more than happy to see us if we had a "scare" or any concerns, at any time. Veterinary Specialty Care is more than a phenomenal animal ER. They have friendly and very knowledgeable staff. Dr. Klein was so nice and understandable. My toy poodle was shaking severely & when we got there and she was in Dr. Klein's arms she was comfortable and very cooperative! The lobby was beautiful. We brought our puppy to this vet hospital and was very disappointed in the way they treated her. First they did not let us in the exam room with our puppy while they were treating her and we could here her yelping non-stop. When the technician came in afterward giving her shots and she stated she acted up because of her breed. She handed her over and my puppy started growling and barking at her. We have a regular vet and this has NEVER happened before. I am convinced but don't know for sure that she mistreated her. Also, we have no idea weather or not the doctor was in the exam room and administered the shots. read more

I have been taking my diabetic cat annually for blood work here for several years. Over two weeks ago I took him on a Wednesday to the new Summerville office. With Covid I had to wait outside. When they put my cat, in his carrier, back in my car almost immediately I smelled crap. When I looked at him he was covered. I had to ride an hour home with him covered in his own crap. They put him in the car like that. I called the office and was told by the staff that the office manager was off that day. They told me someone would reach out to me about this. I've waited over two weeks before writing this and all I've gotten is crickets. Nothing. I cannot believe they brought my cat out to my car covered in crap. I would never do that to anyone. He's a good boy and did not deserve that type of treatment. I will not be returning if this is how they treat our pets and their customers. If you take your pet there. Check it before you leave when they put him in the car. They evidently don't really care very much for your pet if they allow this to happen. read more

I was waiting for 3 hours at 11pm when they knew I had to be gone for a flight at 4 in the morning was finally seen, the doctor was nice and said he thinks its not just a scratch recommended tests and blood work and follow up with a specialty doctor after seeing the specialty doctor only after being recommended to do so, the doctor said there was nothing wrong in the first place and it was exactly what I thought it was going to be just a my cat ran into or bruised the eye. They asked if I got blood work done or chemistry test and I said yes I paid for it however when they called over to 24-Hour vet they said no I did not have a CBC done yet i was charged for and they were unable to to fax over the CBC that I know I had done but they don't have record ofSo the optometrist never saw the CBC I paid for specifically because the doctor said that opthamologist would want to see it in the first place if something was under lying happening. So all those tests were unnecessary and so was the optometrist visit in the first place so $530 later all that money is wasted and management took a week and a half to figure out everything and don't offer me any kind of solution to the unnecessary money I spent on Specialty Care and testing. Frustrated to say the least. read more

What an exceptional place. We had an emergency on Sunday night at 11:30 and rushed our very small dog to VSC. Dr. Williams assessed the problem, took x-rays, and shared her concerns. She was on top of the problem as was the night staff. Our dog stayed and was seen by Dr. Freeman (Neurology). She called me that morning, explained the problem, described our options and suggested a cautious approach. She is professional, caring and knowledgeable. How fortunate is it that so many specialists with the skills and education needed to care for sick pets are in one place and in SC. Billing and charges were very fair given the situation, level of care and the expertise of the doctors. Thank you! read more

While this is a much belated review, we still want to say how terrific Vet Special Care is and how devoted, compassionate and caring the Doctors and staff are! We had a 8 month 'run ' with our much loved kitty, Georgie Girl, who had a rare cancer tumor in her throat - we had several emergency over night stays and ultimately we lost her. The doctors gave us good practical medical care without 'over selling' - which we very much appreciated - while at the same time, giving us all options to buy time. Often while there, I saw emergency " rescue" animals come in,from wildlife to those with no owners, and their help, and caring compassion was just the same. Everyone there gives 100% and always with a smile, hug and a lot of heart! We are lucky to have them in our community. read more

AWFUL EXPERIENCE FROM START TO FINISH! MARIA, the vet could have cared less!! My 17 month old dog was having labored breathing from tons on mucus in his little head. I had taken him to the vet the day before and started him on some medication but the next night he was so bad, I was afraid he was going to stop breathing so my only option was to take him there. The receptionist was emotionless. When someone finally took him back, the receptionist comes to me and tries to get me to sign this form that says I'm giving consent for the doctors to do whatever they want and it's going it could cost between $400 and $600 and if I decline then they might not be able to get proper care. She was insistent that I sign but I knew he had a cold so I declined... Second-guessing myself feeling like I was being cheap. After waiting forever and talking to the guy next to me who was also very discouraged by the place and then talking to another person who had been there before and was also very discouraged but had no other choice, they called me back and the vet tech acted like she was half asleep and not interested. Finally when the vet, Maria, came in... who looked like a child... had nothing to offer. I asked what she did to him and she said nothing, she just checked his vitals and they had already done that when I got there. I asked her about a few options and she acted like she didn't know what I was talking about. One was something my vet had mentioned the day before and she literally threw her hands up and said "oh I don't know how to do anything like that." I said "I just came in with my dog who is very sick, spent two hours waiting and you are not going to help me?" She said she could stick tubes up his nose, put him under anesthesia and check that way. I told her no way she was going to do that. Then she said there was nothing else she could do. She started to open the door as I picked up my dog, I said "so you really are not going to help me and this is an emergency clinic! She opened the door and said "I can't help you" and quickly walked out and shut the door behind her. I went to the receptionist and I told the people in the lobby what a joke it was and I waited another 15 minutes before they charged me for my visit and then this morning when my vet opened they squeezed him in and he is on more medication and I'm hoping he will start feeling better soon. After reading some of the other reviews, I realized that they are all about the money. I started crying the minute I left the building and went home and pretty much watched my dog breathe the rest of the night. What a terrible place with such unprofessional and unqualified people. I guess it's not fair for me to make that a blanket statement so I will say... this applies to the staff that was there last night!! Maria, it's an emergency clinic and if you are a vet, you should be current on ALL kinds of treatments not just the overly expensive ones! read more

I had heard many times over the past few years about a place in Mt. Pleasant, SC, that Vets send animal patients to receive specialty and emergency care. I never dreamed that I too would need their services. My seriously ill Yorkie (family member),was referred to an emergency clinic in Myrtle Beach which turned out to be a nitemare (read my review on Yelp). I made the hour plus drive to Veterinary Specialty Care. I am so VERY glad I did!!! Their knowledgeable Doctors, staff, and state of the art facility saved my angels life! I can't say enough about their professionalism, speedy service, and just all around great way they handled a very stressful time for me and my Yorkie. I will never think twice about where I will go, should I ever need emergency/specialty care. read more

I can't thank Dr. Cook and Klein enough. My cat was extremely ill. I was told by my vet that he would need an ex lap to find a possible obstruction after obtaining a Xray. I declined the surgery and took him to this clinic. Not only was I seen within 10 min, but their entire staff is more than sweet. The girl at the front desk got my poor sick baby water and a litter box for the wait, the ultrasound tech was so patient and careful while holding him and Melissa (vet tech I think) was so sweet and gave him hugs and kisses and explained the d/c instructions very well. The doctors are so knowledgable and gave me multiple options for his plan of care. It is expensive but all healthcare related diagnostic are. If anything were to happen again I am more than confident that Moose (cat) will be cured in a timely manner. Thank you guys so much :) they even called to check in on him. The ER waiting area is very clean with tvs, snacks, and drinks. Separated for felines and dogs double thumbs up. read more

My grandmother recently took her cat here twice in one week to figure out why he was in pain, and they were absolutely no help. They not only completely took advantage of her by taking her money, but they provided no insight into a proper diagnosis. They convinced her to leave her cat overnight, which was an outrageous amount of money, and then called her at 6 in the morning asking what she wanted them to do with her cat - with no info on how the cat was doing! Long waits and crazy prices without any solid results. I would NOT recommend going here unless you want 17 procedures done on your cat in a week leading to your cat's ultimate death. read more

Absolutely not happy with this place. We took our sick puppy here last night. She has been vomiting and unable to keep anything down. We asked for a parvo test. When the doctor came in she said I have evaluated her and she doesn't seem like she has parvo. Dr said she wanted to run some other tests. She left the room and the tech came back with an estimate for tests she didn't need. We opted to wait and took her to our normal vet. As soon as we walked through the door with our normal vet they wanted to run a parvo test with came back positive. Had the test been done last night we could have started treatment earlier. The only feeling I got from this place was they were all about money. I will not return to this place and I would not recommend them. read more

We were devastated after our dog was struck by a car, thrown into another car, and had his jaw pinned underneath the car's tire. Amazingly, his jaw was the only thing broken, and you were able to piece it back together and give us our boy back. When we arrived they were waiting at the door and quickly took him and began treatment. Everyone was kind, helpful and efficient and they did everything they could to make us and our dog comfortable. My toy poodle was treated by the wonderful doctors and staff here for the duration of her critical illness. Through their expertise and devoted attention, we were gifted with 7 more months with her. Everyone we came in contact with was wonderful with her and had great people skills as well! We are grateful for Dr. Kelli Klein for saving her life in the emergency care side, and for Dr. Kathy Sennello for her excellent caring treatment for all of those months. If you're reading this, I'm sure you love your dog or cat as much as I love mine, so let me spend a few minutes telling you about this extraordinary place. In my whole life, I don't know that I've ever been treated with such warmth -- these folks are every single this you'd hope they'd be -- times ten. The level of care and look-you-in-the-eye way is like nothing else. Health wise, some might say my little dog has had a difficult year. We started with Dr. Taylor and her technicians for preventative chemotherapy during the spring months. My heavens, every visit was even better than the last. My little dog is a nervous fellow who shakes the whole time we're at his normal doctor's office, but he walks right into this place because they make sure he feels no worry. On our first visit, I sat on the floor with him -- when Dr. Taylor came in, she sat right down beside us and talked to us with unbelievable kindness. Her personal manner toward us was like that each and every time we saw her and the technicians follow her lead and are equally wonderful. Over these past two days, we saw Dr. Williams in the emergency care section -- pure-T wonderful treatment here, too! And today we saw the neurologist, Dr. Freeman. Honestly -- and I mean honestly -- each doctor and each technician cares so much; it's completely obvious in everything they do. If you wonder whether your pet will be in good hands, you can completely trust he or she definitely will be at Veterinary Specialty Care. A thousand stars for these great people!!! read more

Our cat was having a few bouts of diarrhea in January 2018, so our vet, The Cat's Meow in Myrtle Beach, SC, advised us to get a gastric ultrasound done. The nearest facility was Veterinary Specialty Care near Charleston. We took her there with the scan referral. That is ALL she was there for. Even the estimate stated she was there just for the scan. What they did next is monstrous. They took it upon themselves to "investigate" the problem based on the initial interview. Again, we told them background but clearly stated there FOR ULTRASOUND SCAN ONLY for intestinal issue. Cat was only 4 pounds. When we drove back to pick her up she was crying, disheveled and frightened like we've never seen. The doctor told us they drugged her, gave here pain meds, seizure meds, numerous other tests based on her background, NONE OF WHICH WERE AGREED TO. WE WERE THERE FOR ULTRASOUND ONLY! The Cat's Meow Vet referred only for scan....other tests, etc., were already completed. When we got home cat would not stop crying and died in my arms around 5AM. This cat was not sick. Our vet referred for an intestinal scan just to cover all the bases. VSC was not given permission to do all of those things but stated "it was in the cat's best interest". Synopsis...cat was NOT that sick. VSC KILLED OUR CAT. Even our vet stated, on the record, that cat was ok, it was minor problem, but VSC killed her with the drugs. There is a special place in Hell for those people. read more

This practice is AMAZING! Dr. Bianucci's initial evaluation and review of my dog's Xrays was professional and thorough. For the long amount of time he spent with her/me, I was only charged $95. He gave me various options for treatment, but a major surgery called Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO) and for Bella, bilaterally, was his recommendation. Frankly, the surgery sounded horrific to me, but he promised that it would relieve her crippling pain and that she would walk again. I googled all that I could about FHO, and reluctantly decided that we had no other option. When I took Bella in, I was so afraid of how things would go. Things went swimmingly. By the next day Bella was feeling well, starting to eat and drink, and enjoyed my company for 3 hours. (Yes, the fabulous techs gave me cushions and a blanket and LITERALLY let me lie on the floor next to her cage, with my head inside the cage!) Their knowledge and compassion for each dog in their care was truly phenomenal. Two days after surgery, Bella was actually walking short distances with her hind legs lifted with a sling outside of the hospital! Dr. Bianucci said I could take her home on Saturday (day 3 post-op). I tried, but since we live on the second floor the 16 steps were just too hard for Bella and for me. Reluctantly and guiltily I brought her back on Saturday night. I was blown away when, Bella began wagging her tail furiously and wanted to hurry up and get into the hospital again!!! Now this is a very timid dog who is terrified to go into our local vet's office -- and here she was, wanting to go see all of her new friends, the techs! So, no guilt at leaving her whatsoever. I didn't get her until Tuesday, 6 days post-op. The stairs were difficult (my husband had to carry her up and down to relieve herself -- she won't do so in the house), but after 4 more days, I was able to easily help her walk up and down the stairs now barely using the sling for her hind legs. We went yesterday to get her staples removed. Believe it or not: Bella got away from me (sling) and RAN down the hall looking for her friends. She loves everyone there, including Dr. Bianucci. SO DO I!!! read more

Our cat was in stage 4 kidney disease and we were at a point where we tried everything. During the holiday weekend, he got really bad and our vet was not open. We chose to take him to the 24 hour center, because we could not stand to see him suffer any longer. The reception got us a private room right away, which is why I gave them a 1 star, but then we had to wait about an hour for anyone to come in. Mind you we are about to do the hardest thing we have ever had to do, and we had to wait to do it. I went to reception and she was very apologetic and said that she would get someone. about 15 minutes later a tech comes in to get our cat and put a catheter in him. We told her please have the doctor in right away, we are really getting upset. She said she would, 15 minutes later the doctor finally comes in, she said just let us know when you are ready, we were like we are ready now, we have waited far too long. We are really upset. My husband says to Dr. Ashley Williams, we have listened to you see 3 dogs already and on had diarrhea, the walls are thin. She then got mad at us and told us that there are dogs in the back that can't breath on their own, and we don't know what is going on back there. It started to turn into a lecture and her tone was really condescending. I told her, please we do not want to argue, can we please just move on, she started to say something else, and I said, please we don't want to argue. If we could have left we would have left right then, but we couldn't bare to see him suffer anymore. I really hope that Dr. Ashley Williams thinks about peoples feelings in the future. We have had our cat for 16 wonderful years and for her to argue with us was not how we wanted it to end. She made a terrible situation worse, and I will never forgive that. read more

First of all I tried to give this practice no stars, but it wouldn't allow that rating. The doctors are amazing - the staff not so much, but I think they are driven by their office manager as they all refer back to that person. I have spent thousands of dollars on my cat there and now that I am under their care without any other options, they gauge me for every little thing I need. Is it my fault that they elected to put in a feeding tube that requires an adapter which breaks every third time I have to use it? It is seriously a piece of plastic junk that has no structural integrity and they want to charge $10 a piece for replacements - on line they are sold for .77, yet the staff person says they sell this item at their cost and that were I to be "given" one she could be fired. Really?!?!? Did I mention I have spent thousands? I am outraged. I went to Dr. Jameson when he had a small practice and I couldn't have asked for a better experience. Now they are so big they just flat don't care and the staff (not all, but as long as I am being brutally honest - Most) have an air of superiority and seem more on a mission to make money than to cure - NO compassion (Not the Doctors, remember - just the staff). This review is for the office on W. Montague Ave in North Charleston. This place deserves negative 5 stars. The staff doesn't care a damn about your pet they only care about the $$$. They treated our puppy with parvo for 6 days. We were told all week that she was having ups and downs and that was normal with these sick pups, but all in all she was doing well and her vitals were normal and her CBC was within normal limits. We kept asking to visit with her and they kept telling us no because she was in isolation. We asked to go into the isolation room and visit with her and we would leave out the back door so we didn't walk through the clinic and again the answer was no. On the 6th day the vet called to tell us that our puppy was "crashing" and she wanted to do a plasma transfusion and the cost would $450 and that would take us to our $4k credit limit. The blood transfusion did little good and once we were out of money they told us that there really want anything more they could do for her. We ended up euthanizing her. So sad!! The only person there that told us they were sorry for our loss was a tech that came in to get her once she passed. Please Please don't take your pets here!! read more
