Illegal Treatment and Animal Cruelty On Tuesday, I went to Blue Pearl Animal Hospital because I was worried that my dog's spaying wound might have opened. After filling out one page of information and a short "in case of emergency" declaration, they took my dog into the back, saying they were only going to check her vitals and that she would be out in a second. I felt uncomfortable not being with my dog, but I trusted the doctors. After about five minutes, an employee came up and asked us to sit in a room, saying that a doctor would talk to us after the exam. The exam? I was told they were only checking her vitals. I walked back to the front desk and asked again if they were only checking her vitals and made sure they would not perform any unnecessary treatment. The front desk employee told me it was only vitals and nothing else. A moment later, I heard a dog screaming at the top of its lungs. I was the only person there with a dog, it was my dog. I immediately told them that I wanted to see my dog, but I was repeatedly told that I was not allowed to. I asked why checking vitals would take more than 15 minutes and told them that I did not want anyone touching her scar or putting her through unnecessary pain. The front desk employee said she would check in the back to make sure my dog was okay and inform the doctor of what I had said. She came back and told me that it was another dog screaming and that they were only checking my dog's vitals. After another five minutes, I became impatient and asked again what was taking so long just to check vitals. The employee walked to the back again and then returned, saying they only had one more vital sign to check and that my dog would come out soon. By this point, it had been over 20 minutes. I told them that checking vitals should not take this long and that I did not want them to treat my dog without my permission. Another front desk employee then said that they were only checking the vitals, like looking at the ears and measuring the temperature, and asked me to go back into the room so the doctor could do the exam with me. I went back into the room, and a few minutes later the doctor walked in with my dog. My dog was covered in a bandage and had 10 staples in her. I was completely shocked. My heart dropped, and I could barely speak. The doctor told us that the incision had been slightly open, so she stapled my dog. She then handed us a $400 bill and sent us to the front desk. At the front desk, I told them that this was not okay and that I had been lied to the entire time. After some discussion, the front desk employee brought the doctor in charge to speak with me. The doctor told me that she had made all the decisions herself, which made the situation even worse, since it meant multiple employees had given me false information. I had been lied to the entire time and repeatedly given incorrect information. The worst part was that they did all of this without my consent, and it was not even an emergency. When I brought this up, the doctor said that it was not an emergency but that the dog was already on her table, so it was convenient. I was shocked by that statement. I told them they should not have even looked at the scar without me present and that I wanted to be there for my dog. The doctor then said that she was taking initiative because my dog was already lying there and did not even need numbing. So they are telling me that without my permission, while the staff was simultaneously telling me something completely different, they put staples into my dog without numbing her, without a consultation, and without asking me. When I looked at the bill, I also noticed unreasonable charges, such as $71 for a bandage. I told them how unprofessional this was and that it felt less like helping my dog and more like making a quick buck. The doctor then said in a snarky tone that she could take the bandage off if I wanted to. I left feeling sick to my stomach. My dog had been put through unnecessary pain, I could no longer trust the veterinarians, and I had the overwhelming feeling of being lied to by everyone involved. On top of that, I was handed a $400 bill that I never consented to, never received an estimate for, and never signed. I am extremely angry and heartbroken that I trusted them and unknowingly put my dog through all of this. read more

We made this visit due to an internist not being available in the specialist clinic side the day we needed treatment. The ER staff was great -- friendly, patient and knowledgeable. The visit overall took a very long time due to critical care needs of other pets. While we understand, we were not given a heads up. My 6 year old Shih Tzu had surgery on November 15th. I am not arguing that the results of the surgery would have been different but it was the lack of communication when Buddy was declining that is important to know. I called on Friday 11/17 at 8:00 AM and askEd to speak to someone because Buddy was not doing well. Dana the receptionist told me everyone was busy but I would get a call back-none came. I called back at approximately 3:00 and was on hold for over 26 minutes and got disconnected. I then called back (this place is supposed to be a 24/7 emergency vet). It rang and rang and my call was transferred to the Summerville location. Mount Pleasant had closed for the weekend. We took Buddy to the Summerville location and he had to be put down on Sunday night. Still no call back. On Monday the surgeon called but Linda the patient liaison whom I was told would call me and whom I emailed NEVER called. I picked up his ashes 2 weeks later and the clay paw print was not with the ashes. I was told it was at the Summerville location. Linda assured me the paw print would be hand delivered because it was too fragile to mail. I requested a call to know when I could expect it. Again, no call from anyone. I called 2days later only to be told by Dana, the receptionist that it had been mailed FedEx. No tracking number was available and neither was Linda. Dana was the person I spoke to on Friday when Buddy was so sick. The next day I received a voicemail from Linda with a tracking number but no explanation why it was now safe to mail the clay paw print. When I finally received the package, I was shocked to learn that I HAD TO BAKE IT. They could not have been bothered to do it. Frankly I don't even know whether it is really Buddy's print or some other poor fur baby. I spent over $10,000 at Blue Pearl and this is how they treated us. Never go there at any cost. read more

I can't say enough about Blue Pearl. Our 6.5 year old bulldog had to have emergency surgery for urite stones which were blocking his urethra. We noticed that our dog wanted to go outside but would not pee. He would squat but nothing came out. He has previously had a stone issue when he was a puppy and I just knew something was wrong. We called and the person who answered the phone agreed it would be best to have him seen. We rushed him to Blue Pearl in Mt. Pleasant and I am so glad we did. Danielle L. Fraser DVM saw him in the emergency room and started the first procedure to try and push the stone back into his bladder but the stone would not budge. She consulted with Dr. Sean Gallivan and they decided he would need to have surgery. Danielle was so kind and patient with us especially because I was a bit hysterical and cried the entire time. She was very informative and when we had to leave she made sure she stayed in contact with me. Sean had done diesels surgery the next afternoon and found way more than we expected. The type of stones diesel had are not easily seen in imaging. the surgeon was able to get the stones removed from diesels urethra and back into his bladder to be removed. When they opened him up they found dozens of stones that had to be removed and his tubes and bladder had to be cleaned. Sean did an amazing job and my husband and I can never thank him enough for saving our babies life. He called right after the surgery and was very friendly and optimistic. The entire staff at Blue Pearl was fabulous. The ICU nurses were so kind and did not make me feel crazy for calling 100 times to check on him. We are so glad we went with Blue Pearl in Mt.Pleasant and I suggest just the clinic, Danielle and Sean to anyone who's pet is in need, sick or just not acting right. Thank you all again for everything you have done. Our little family would never have been the same if you wouldn't have saved our guys life. Veterinary Specialty Care and Dr. Andrews saved my cat, Figaro's (Figgy's), life! I cannot thank them enough for taking such good care of my baby! I could tell Figgy had been feeling poorly all weekend. He had urinated on our bedspread a couple times which was completely out of character for him and wasn't running around as much as normal. Monday before I left for work he still seemed okay but by the time I got home he had declined quite a bit. I called and made a vet appointment for the following day with our primary vet's office. As the evening progressed, Figgy threw up what looked to be his body weight (like really, i'm not sure how all of it was in his tiny little tummy) and started yowling randomly. He then hid in the farthest reaching back corner of the bed as possible and continued to cry out in pain. He had no interest in food or treats. We finally had to move the bed to get him out and when we picked him up he cried out in even more pain and looked terribly lethargic. I put his bowl of water in front of him and he stuck his whole face in it and drank the entire bowl very quickly. By this time we were very concerned. It was about 10 PM and we started to think he probably wouldn't make it through the night and to his vet appointment at 11:30 AM the next day. We frantically started googling 24 hour vets and landed on Veterinary Specialty Care. We called ahead and made our way to Mount Pleasant to bring him in. When we arrived, they took him back immediately while we filled out paperwork. Within 15-20 minutes we were called back to a room to talk to Dr. Andrews about his diagnosis and treatment options. Figgy had a urinary blockage and needed to have a catheter inserted and bladder flushed. We were told he'd need to stay roughly 48 hours and our little guy wasn't coming home with us. We told Dr. Andrews to proceed and were given a cost estimate for the treatment which we were told we had to pay up front. The price was a bit shocking, but it's emergency vet care and to be quite honest it's about the price I expected to pay when we decided to take him there. Dr. Andrews informed me she'd give me a call in a few hours once the catheter was in and they had more information so we paid the bill and went home. Of course I did what NO ONE should do AFTER leaving their pet somewhere... I started reading reviews online for this place. This is emergency vet care folks... there's some horrible reviews out there. I felt like I had made a terrible mistake after reading some of things written about this place. I'm here to tell you that I am VERY thankful that my experience here was exceptional and I would take any of my pets here again if another emergency occurred. Dr. Andrews called me just like she said she would around 1 AM. I tried to answer it but I was groggy and don't think I heard it til the very last ring so she ended up leaving me a very detailed message and assured me everything was going smoothly. She called me again in the morning around 7:30 and once again gave me an update on his condition and treatment. She let us know we could visit Tuesday night if we wanted to, just to be sure to call ahead. We called ahead and came in around 7 PM to see him for a few minutes. They took us back to ICU area since he was hooked up to several different things. It melted my heart to see the little sign on his crate that said "Best Patient Award"! The vet tech, Penny, was so kind during our visit and told us everyone there adored him. I'm grateful for the amazing care he received there. Dr. Andrews continued to update us through the evening and Wednesday morning letting us know when he would most likely be discharged. and Dr. Nord was the last to call with the good news that I could come get him. Figgy unfortunately had a lot of crystals in his urine which means this issue could occur again if he doesn't go on a special diet and it will be something we'll have to keep an eye on from now on. It's a bit discouraging to hear as he just turned 4 years old on Sunday but we will be doing whatever is necessary so he lives a long and healthy life! Again, a huge thank you to Dr. Andrews and everyone else at Veterinary Specialty Care for their quick diagnosis, constant contact with me, and amazing care they gave our boy Figgy! read more

Don't go unless your dog is unstable. Unfortunately, I would not return to bluepearl again. As a physician, I am very familiar with the medicine and what care is essential. I understand that blue pearl is a business and you need to make money. However, the treatment plan that you were proposing for my dog was inappropriate. Every medication comes with risks and side effects. Nothing comes with zero risk. Blue pearl was trying to give my dog unnecessary care for symptoms that she did not have, ultimately putting her at more risk just so that they could make an extra $1,000.00 They also refused to care for my dog until I paid $95.00 for a pointless toxicology consult. The toxicologist told us nothing that google hadn't already told us and added nothing to her care. However, refusing to care for my pet until this was done was inappropriate, delayed my pet's care and ultimately put her at increased risk. read more

One of my recent Charleston Animal Society foster cats was under the care of Dr. Bianucci for a somewhat rare thing in cats. First, I love that we have such a wonderful specialty/emergency facility in our area that works so well and closely with our shelters and animal sanctuary. Secondly, it is amazing to me that given the fact they never know what could walk in their door, every appointment I had was handled on time and in a timely manner. Our family dog was dying this morning and we brought him into blue pearl. We take all of our dogs here for emergencies. Our experiences over the years have always been positive with the staff. Today it was far from it. The front desk woman with hot pink hair, named Nicole, has very poor customer service skills, she's unprofessional, carries no compassion towards clients and really to be honest has no business working there with the poor attitude she has. She should be ashamed of herself and her performance at the front desk this morning. Nicole has no idea how to perform her job skills properly. It's unfortunate that we had to deal with her while our dog was getting put down due to his medical condition. I have probably been to every veterinarian in the greater Los Angeles area, having run a rescue that saved over 600 dogs and having had anywhere from 1 to 12 dogs in my home at once. Now let me back up... My best friend got a job in Charleston and found a wonderful house in a place called Mt. Pleasant. "Come with us!" she said. I work from home and was up for an adventure so I excitedly said yes... Off we went in 2 cars with 4 dogs and 2 birds across the country. What could go wrong?! Well the trip went surprisingly well and we landed in Mt. Pleasant. We hadn't been here 24 hours before the action began. If you have ever read one thing about Jack Russell terriers, you would wonder what human being would ever want such a dog. In my rescue we made a rule that we only adopted JRT's to people who'd had them before, because they are impossible. And yet here I sit, with my 3 legged JRT on my lap, and I love him like crazy of course. Anyway, on our first full day here off he went to explore the yard, because he's a hunter. He came galloping in with something big and hard which I finally pried from his jaws of steel. The yard had 2 giant sego palms so we feared the worst. We quickly called Veterinary Specialty Care who said, "We see this all the time, get him in here immediately because it can be fatal." Thank God we were only a few minutes away and raced him in where they took him from us immediately to begin evaluating him. They took blood and laid out the possibilities and advised us to leave him overnight, which we did. As we left, I called over my shoulder "be gentle with him, he'll be scared but he's totally sweet..." I spent the evening weeping while I watched a slideshow of his pictures on my computer (ok, so I can get a little dramatic)... until they called to say, "he's doing fine so far but wow what a feisty little guy, he tried to bite several people so he has a caution warning on his cage now." I was MOR - TI - FIED. Well the sego palm seed did not kill him, thank God, and the next night he was happy and healthy in his new home with a hefty bill to his name. It was worth every penny (and as an aside, this is why I advocate people getting pet insurance and I totally recommend Trupanion). The doctors and techs were so nice, but didn't stop to chit chat. They were business-like in dealing with a potentially life-threatening emergency, they handled his wildly dramatic screams and tantrums calmly, and seemed genuinely happy to see him go off without any lasting damage. Everyone I encountered seemed to genuinely care about all animals. The facility is beautiful, from what I could see. And the staff and care were totally impressive. Knowing this pup, I imagine we will make more trips in the future and I'll know that my dog is in great hands. read more

I may change my rating. Our loved one is still at BP. We suspected that he ate a sago palm seed. So we brought our boxer who is 85 lbs up that way with the evidence. Symptoms were vomiting. We paid $100 for poison control which is reasonable. They confirmed that was a sago seed. However the waiting and waiting with extremely vague answers was bewildering. What was clear was the $5000 estimate that we had to pay first before he could be treated. Plus we had to leave him. In addition, they don't even leave you with a direct number to call to check in. You have to wait on them to call. You would think common consideration of the owner would be entitled to such. Especially after a paying 5K. I've never experienced anything like this in the Lowcountry. NEVER. It's a different world out there folks. read more

Walked in with our dog who had been short of breath and they made us sit in a 10x10 room with our dog for over 90 minutes!!! When I went out to ask for an update, they said they couldn't specify as to when they would get to us as their were "other" priorities! I asked if we should just leave and was then even told that "yeah, you might have better luck going to a vet"!!! Customer service is definitely absent at this place! I have a sick dog. I was unable all day Saturday to see a vet so Sunday called Blue Pearl and was told if I could be there between 10-10:30 he could be seen. I arrived at 10:15 and only then told there would be a 5 hour wait. This was for an emergency! I am disgusted!
