I was looking for my friend and was able to reach him via cellphone, I told him to go into the closest store for help which happened to be health food & vitamin city. I asked my friend to hand over the phone to the only employee there so I could get a bearing on his location, I was coming from Glendale Queens NY to try and get him. I tried to explain to the employee that my friend suffers from mental issues, to please keep him there while I arrived. When I got to the store about 15 minutes later, my friend was gone. The store employee said he wanted to get to 14 st subway, so he let him go. He was found by the police in LI CITY Queens the following morning. The employee's Humanitarianism wasn't present. The store was closing, not his problem

If you've lived as long as I have in Chelsea, a walk down any block prompts memories for what used…read moreto be in any given storefront. That used to be a long-loved video rental! This used to be sweet bistro where many days and nights were shared with friends. This particular storefront is even more rare because it's not a chain and is open late, for the way working folk have needed to live here for a long time. It's not Whole Foods or Vitamin Shoppe (or whatever that chain's named), but a humble spot where the selection of vitamins, herbs, topicals and a few pantry staples probably contains exactly what you're looking for. Ask any of my neighbors what they think about your cough, sniffle or dry skin, and they'll tell you, "Go see the vitamin guy on 23rd." And you should. Because for years, he's dispensed sound counsel to a number of us whose needs aren't easily addressed by either of those aforementioned chains or that chain pharmacy who makes you summon a worker to unlock some dental floss. I'd been recovering from RSV when my husband stopped by the Vitamin Guy and told him about my lingering cough and shallow breathing. He brought home some Olbas syrup and a tincture containing a melange of herbs, half of which I was familiar as a TCM patient for a number of years. Within week one I was feeling great relief. A neighbor who'd been hit with the same condition went and had his own chat and relief success story a week after me, and unprompted, said, "Vitamin Guy saved me again!" This is but one of many ways Vitamin Guy's helped me, my husband and many neighbors over 18 years. Go see him the next time you're wondering what you can do about whatever's ailing you; he probably has some sound advice to share, and you'd be keeping the lights on amid the many otherwise darkened storefronts that don't exactly inspire confidence around greater Chelsea.

Located right off the Clinton/Washington C train stop, it is a convenient place to grab a juice or a few things when your cupboard is bare. I really like the juice bar. They have a Super C drink that is half orange half grapefruit and some ginger that got me through a spring cold. They also have a nice bulk bin and lots of basics. They don't turn their invetory over quite fast enough so make sure you check the sell by date. I have encountered moldy loaves of bread and overdo containers of those veggie-chix salads in the fridge area. The owner is relaxing more and more now, I think he was a bit nervous about the business at first. He is more willing to chat and smile now. Seems to come from some kind of asian-religious-healthy-vegetarian angle but there is nothing overt or off-putting about it. It is not cheap by a long shot. $10 credit card minimum. I have asked if he would carry a few items and I am waiting to see if he comes through. 5 stars for being a convenient local organic grocer. Minus 1 star for the mold bread. Soy!

It's a big store with an extensive selection and it's not terribly overpriced, with many reasonable options, but you can suffer from sticker shock on some of the items on their shelves. I stumbled into this place looking for Chanca Piedra tea (great for kidney stones). The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. I heard their interactions with other customers and they were all top-notch with a focus on understanding the people's issues so that the correct products could be recommended. I wandered through the aisles checking out their other items. Lots of organic juices. Lots of specialty items that are hard to find. They even had a freezer section that contained my favorite "healthy" snack, coconut milk ice cream sandwiches from So Delicious. Seriously, if you're lactose intolerant then you need these tasty delights in your life. I don't see shifting ALL my grocery needs to Olive May, but I will definitely pop in for their extensive organic options and those lovely ice cream sammiches.
