Incredible pizza joint located on/in/next to/within an incredible brewery (Dancing Gnome). It's hard to categorize what "style" of pizzas these are...maybe California-ish? Whatever they are, they are incredible! They have a series of pizza named after every Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle except one. The one they leave out is, by far, the worst one. Blue Sparrow has become the flagship "food truck" to Dancing Gnome Brewery. That being said, they operate out of a permanent truck/camper that is parked right next to the brewery and the outside deck leads up to the truck. This is very convenient to almost always have at least one food option while imbibing on some outstanding brews. I had never ordered here prior to this last visit. I don't usually order from food trucks but decided to give it a try. I went with the Fungus Amongus Pizza and subbed in dairy free cheese. I was incredibly excited for the pie. The pies were ready in a very reasonable time, and we sat down to eat. I first noticed how oily the pie was. The paper circle it rested on was covered in oil and it pooled all around the pie. I went to pull a piece out to sample it and was met with some pasty white undercooked greasy dough. Disappointing was the least I could say. I took a few bites, but the underneath was so unappetizing I decided to go ask for a box and re-bake the pie at home. I did not feel like asking for another or to fix the issue so that is on me, but I was expecting better for the amount of traffic that is happening here. Once re-baked at home the pie was good, not great. But at least I was able to get the crust cooked and blotted a lot of the excessive oil. I don't think I will eat here again, but others seem to really enjoy it, and once cooked properly the pie was average enough for 3 stars. read more

Outstanding food and service! I ordered the kimchi/pork)cheese/egg toasted sandwich, which was amazing . I'm "of a certain age" & needed a little help w. the automated ordering screen right outside the bus (didn't attempt a phone order from inside Dancing Gnome!) and was assisted by the 2 very upbeat guys making the food- believe one was the owner. The bus itself is amazing & the service was too! My friend also enjoyed the pizza she ordered. I'll definitely be back! Wish there was at least spiked seltzer available at Dancing Gnome as I'm not a beer drinker, but it was well worth just having water to eat great food in a beautiful air conditioned space! Blue Sparrow continues to kill it. I'm so glad truck season is back. I'm in a sling recovering from surgery so we will probably rely on them to feed us once a week. The online ordering system is so easy to use. The menu has great variety and always great vegetarian options. My favorites are the tofu banh mi, falafel burrito and kimchi grilled cheese. Since I'm one handed I switched it up and got the banh mi in rice bowl form. I was able to cut up the tofu and veggies and easily eat it with a spoon. There was plenty of sauce so each bite was full of flavor. Never skip dessert when getting food from Blue Sparrow. Their cookies and brownies are always tasty. The did an orange cream beer brownie topped with Fruity Pebbles.... AMAZING. My mouth is watering just thinking about it and I can't wait for it to be on the menu again. Keep killing it Blue Sparrow. I was just telling someone that Blue Sparrow is absolutely the best food truck in Pittsburgh, but I wanted to check and if my laudatory statement still holds true. I finally tried Blue Sparrow for the first time last weekend at the "Lights On!" festival Downtown at the Allegheny Overlook. Friends and other Elites have raved about Blue Sparrow, and I was glad to see it was open. I have gone to the Allegheny Overlook a bunch of times, but always on weekdays. This was the first time I saw the truck open- so they may only be there on the weekends. The menu was small, but they had either a Korean BBQ Burrito, Bahn Mi, Cheesy Kimchi Fried Rice, or a Spicy Mac Dog. They also had 8 different types of Leona's ice cream sandwiches. I liked that you could get tofu in either the burrito or bahn mi, but I was disappointed that these were the only two veg options. I was really hungry, so I decided to try the burrito. Unpopular opinion...but I wasn't obsessed with it like I thought I would be! The burrito was large and I cut it in half. It was a whole cup of the kimchi rice (I don't know if it was cheesy, but it didn't taste like it), scallions, korean BBQ sauce, with 2 pieces of grilled tofu wrapped in a tortilla. The spicy BBQ sauce was really good. I wish it had crunchy vegetables or cheese or something to combine it all together. It was just too much rice. I ate half of it and it was fine. I saw people walk past with the Bahn Mi and I wish I would have tried that. Next time for sure! I think I just picked a menu item that wasn't for me. The truck itself looked very clean inside, and the workers had a great system going. They were super friendly and service was quick. Overall I liked this food, but I didn't love it, and wouldn't order the burrito again. read more

This place is amazing! Found the "bus" at the Grist House on St. Paddy's day weekend, and got so much delicious food; a bahn mi, amazing Irish pancake boxty tots, and okonomiyaki. Everything was perfect. I can't wait to find them again soon! UPDATE: So we went out on an adventure after Allegheny was able to go Yellow, and headed to blue sparrow's commissary in Avalon. We got pizza on a Saturday afternoon. It was awesome! You schedule a time to pick up and it's ready when you arrive! We got the Greek and Bahn Mi. They were both perfect. Blue Sparrow should be on of the top-rated food trucks in Pittsburgh. with its neat concept (global street food) and delicious food. During the difficult 2020, the truck seems doing okay by teaming up with local breweries. At a weekend noon near a brewery, we ordered a bibimbap and a chorizo gyro/burrito from the truck. The food is tasty in general and qualifies as a high-end street food. Their bibimbap looks its part but far from authentic. As an Asian foodie, I personally don't like that they replace fresh veggies with salty pickled veggies. The chorizo gyro/burrito is an interesting middle-eastern & Mexican fusion item, which was creamy and flavorful but unfortunately too salty for me. Overall, the food is of high-quality for those who prefer savory food with some international twists. However, our ordering experience wasn't smooth. They ran out of many protein choices for bowls and gyros/burritos when we ordered, so we had to create new menu on the flight (chorizo was my only choice). Also, we waited more than 20 minutes for the food after ordering, which is pretty slow for a food truck. Probably the only smart way to order is to pre-order on their website. They have different menus depending on days and locations. I haven't tried their pizzas yet and will try to grab one some time. It's a solid 3.5-star food truck and I usually round up my review in this difficult 2020. read more

Based on the great reviews of this place I had high expectations. However, I was completely underwhelmed. We signed up for the Blue Sparrow and 11th Hour Brewing Valentine's Day event which included beers and a meal from Blue Sparrow. We got 3 pieces of shrimp that were really good. But the bowl itself wasn't seasoned at and fell flat. The sauce they used (if any) didn't blend well with the rest of the ingredients. And finally, I like to finish my meals no matter what, but I just couldn't finish it. We had to go somewhere else after because we weren't satisfied with our food. Maybe we need to try it again on a less busy night? I'm not sure. read more

I've always wanted to try a food truck but for some reason kept missing them. This one just happened to be on the Northside today across from Commonplace coffee at Mexican War St. They told me they are here every Thurs. I opted for the veggie banh which consisted of Japanese eggplant, zucchini, and tofu. All for $8.00. Got the sandwich in less than 5 minutes and it was literally to die for! Was a bit messy too but hey great food can be messy. I'm glad I took plenty of napkins. They are based out of Lawrenceville and are in a different part of the city most days of the week except Tue. I finally caught this truck down in Braddock at the Brewery and I'm so glad I did. I was worried because they're known for their Ramen Burgers and as I don't eat beef or pork I was curious to if I would find something to eat on this truck. Boy was I in for a surprise! I decided to try their Tikka Masala taco and their Thai Taco. I opted for the potato rather than selecting chicken as my protein and didn't feel like I was missing anything. The Thai taco was my favorite as it had a spicy kick to it and hints of cilantro throughout. Kim chi fried rice is one of my absolute favorite foods, so this was a no brainer. It was so rich and packed with a variety of flavors and textures. Incredible comfort food. This is a type of food truck that does a lot to boost the scene in Pittsburgh. There are the staples, but we already have quite a few trucks doing bbq, tacos, hoagies, and burgers. So for me, a food truck that makes things found nowhere else, whether truck or B&M, and makes them good is an automatic win. Blue Sparrow's focus is "street food," but with their current menu items I could probably get away with specifying most of them as Asian / Latin fusion street food. The two staples are the pulled pork banh mi an the ramen burger. Both are fantastic, and I probably prefer the banh mi myself. It contains many of the traditional ingredients found in a standard Vietnamese sandwich, like the pickled carrots, cilantro, cucumbers, etc., and the bread is nicely toasted. Instead of the traditional Vietnamese ham or pate, the meat consists of a large portion of tender, delicious pulled pork, enough to fill you up. The ramen burger, already quite popular on the coasts, is a different beast . A bit smaller than the banh mi, it contains a bed of pickled cabbage and leafy greens on top of a very very tender and juicy patty, all of which is held together by two fried ramen "buns." The combination wasn't my favorite thing in the world, but definitely do try it for the novelty, if not for the beef patty. They also do a grilled kim-cheese, essentially a grilled cheese sandwich (they gave us a quesadilla after running out of bread!) with kimchi inside. I enjoyed their various tacos more though, and I was able to try the tikka potato masala and bulgogi tacos. The curry in the former was deliciously creamy with all the levels of spice you'd expect when getting the regular Indian dish, while the latter combined tender marinated meats with kimchi, all wrapped in a tortilla in standard Ko-Mex style. Perfectly priced for the amazing melt-in-your-mouth Thai Tacos we both devoured. The peanut sauce was to-die-for. Plus, the people in the truck were so nice! It was very cold and they sent us inside, instead of waiting in the cold. The woman even brought our food inside to us (partly because we didn't see her waving). The sad part is not all are good and because of the popularity of food trucks aren't cheaper options when compared to their brick & mortar counterparts. Now erase that and think of lands visited less then throw them in the air and jumble them together in creative and innovative ways. That's what Blue Sparrow does. They seem to just throw darts when combining cultural foods, but it works. Furthering this I am not easy to please when it comes to Korean food, especially fusion or jumbled. They crush it. Kimchi anything from Sparrow is delicious and I cannot get enough of the Korean Cheesesteak. It's meaty, funky, cheesy and the right portion. It was slow going for awhile, but I'm so glad that the Pittsburgh food truck scene is growing. I'm even more excited that I live in close proximity to some of the best round ups in the city, including Coffee Buddha. Grabbed the pulled pork Bahn Mi and the Thai spicy chicken sandwich today for my wife and I, and both were absolutely amazing. The bread was perfect, with refreshing pickled vegetables, and great sauces on top. $8 each and a good amount or pork and chicken on each respective sandwich, so I didn't leave hungry.
