Massage is critical for my health, as I've got a disabling chronic illness that keeps me quite sedentary (and with a hyper-sensitive nervous system and low pain tolerance). I've had monthly massage as part of physical therapy, for years- but since March 2020 I hadn't had a single one. So I was in pretty bad shape when I first went to Kate. And by the end of my 60-minute session, my chronic pain was so far reduced by her skill, I almost wept with relief. She's not the cheapest massage therapist I've ever had- but she's by far the best, and worth every penny. Even days when I'm not in pain, I can feel the difference after her massage. And she varies her technique and focus based on how I'm feeling as well as her own expertise. Every massage with her has made a noticeable difference in my body, for the better. She's also very personable and calm, doesn't try to chat at me during the massage, and has created a calming, welcoming environment with her studio (from the electric fireplace to the music, to the warming massage table, the cleanliness of the space, the plants and crystals, etc.) Her cupping machine is interesting, and her massage lotion is great for my dry, sensitive skin. She's a very positive, kind person (as well as being observant) and clearly is continuing to develop her considerable skill. After reading the reviews and researching the company, I scheduled a preliminary consultation to see if they could help me with my problems. I told them that I had been struggling with this for over five years and explained that traditional medicine offered no answers. The team at the center conducted an evaluation and provided me with an 8-week plan consisting of three sessions per week. While there was no guarantee that their treatments would help, they led me to believe that they had treated others with similar conditions. They cited cases in which other patients had resumed an active life and engaged in activities such as playing golf. After faithfully attending each session, I noticed no change in my symptoms or function, which was a clear sign that the treatments were ineffective. I believe that they should have known, following their initial evaluation, that they wouldn't be able to do anything with their treatments that would actually work for me. The therapist completely violated professional boundaries, turning what should have been a therapeutic medical treatment into a relentless, deeply uncomfortable lecture filled with blatant bigotry. I strongly believe this therapist is actually the owner of the business, which makes the lack of professionalism even more alarming. The conversation began normally with us discussing family, but it took a horrifying turn. When I mentioned having Black/African-American family members, the room became incredibly tense. She responded with complete hostility and ignorance, saying, "What? Is he from Africa or something? Cuz I just don't get it, this African-American thing," before bluntly demanding, "Is he black?" It was an incredibly invasive and icky interaction. She then went on to make the explicitly racist statement that Black people and white people should not mix or be together. She pointedly remarked that my family member "must have been real handsome" for me to be with them in the first place--a deeply backhanded, inappropriate comment given the context. In the same breath, she complained about the two barber shops that had opened up below her, stating that she was "suspicious" of them. On top of the racism, she aggressively pushed her religious beliefs on me, insisting that Christianity is the "only one way" and demanding I check out a specific website for a speaker, claiming "everybody should know this." Her behavior was also aggressively homophobic and transphobic. She stated she "just doesn't get transgender" people and ranted about how it is "weird and crazy" that women are marrying women, telling me, "well, at least you married a man and not a woman. It's crazy what people do these days." Because I was on the table receiving a medical massage, I felt entirely trapped, unsafe, and unsure of what to do. I ended up just nodding along and saying "yeah" simply to get through the session safely, which no client should ever be forced to do. Because this behavior comes directly from the person running the establishment, there is zero accountability. It is completely unacceptable. Avoid this place if you value a safe, inclusive, and professional environment.
