My first grader attended the 2024 summer program at Young Scholars Academy ("YSA") and now attends…read morethe writing class during the 2025 school year. She has always been a pretty good student, but YSA has made her much better. It's as if she is a different student now than she was before that summer, especially with confidence in writing. She has learned so many things so organically that it was fun for her. She also has amassed a notebook of "beautiful sentences" (her words) that she constructs each week for YSA and from which she later picks and chooses phrases for poetry/creative writing. This has directly led her to win awards at national literature competitions, which I don't think she would have done had she not been in YSA. What more, she has made friends at YSA through the entertaining field trips and Fun Fridays. She was the new girl, but the kids attending YSA were all very kind, friendly, and generous. My daughter didn't want the summer to end! And I can't say enough good things about her teachers and Ms. Esther, the director. The teachers at YSA are creative and detail-oriented, and they give the kids so much individualized attention because the class size is so small (6 to 8 students per teacher). Then there's Ms. Esther, who you can tell from the start really loves kids and cares about how they are doing. She knows each student by name and who their parents are, she regularly sends detailed texts and photos showing how the kids are doing, and her interaction with each child is colored by warmth. For example, she thinks so much about each child's well-being that she will gently move children into the shade at lunch lest they get too much sun (such a mom thing to do but so bracing to see when someone does it for your child). She also makes sure that they wash their hands at the right times, that they have all their belongings with them, and that they eat what their moms want them to eat before rushing off to play. Wow! The children are taken care of so well--physically, emotionally, and academically. Overall, YSA is superb, and I will sing its praises to no end.

Our son attended YSA for a summer and two trimesters between grades 5-6. Our goal was to support…read morehim in an area of his strength and interest (reading, writing, and language skills) rather than to address a weakness. We liked that he was able to work in the middle school-age content/cohort and push his growth beyond what he was getting in his regular 6th grade school class. We are very happy with the results, and my son didn't want to stop attending (rare for an academy!) when we recently let YSA go to focus on other activities. Miss Esther is always positive, flexible, and easy to communicate with. Her teachers did a good job of connecting with our son and motivating him to keep learning and developing. Things went well enough that we made a request for a series of special, private sessions to prepare my son for the written portion of the Whitney HS admissions exam. Miss Esther and her team worked out a schedule over the course of a month, and our son felt very confident and prepared for the exam. He felt good both before and after the test and ended up earning admission to Whitney! We are appreciative of the care and investment that the YSA team made in our son. We can't think of a higher recommendation than to say we are already planning to enroll our daughter at YSA in about a year when she prepares for middle school.

This is an afterschool tutoring center (or "hagwon" in Korean) which serves kids from kindergarten…read morethrough high school. Instruction is provided in English, although most of the staff is bilingual, and they work well with primarily Korean-speaking kids, too. The center JLC offers van pickup for many schools in the area, including Beatty, Emery, Fisler, and Parks, depending on how many students are enrolled from each school. Call to find out if van pickup is available from other area schools. The facility is a converted house with substantial additions. The parking lot is a bit small, and navigating is difficult in the tight space, especially with kids around. However, there is usually someone outside at pickup time to help direct traffic and keep the lot safe. There is a kitchen and meal hall, and kids typically receive a meal right after school, before tutoring begins. The regular daily schedule (for Mondays through Thursdays) is divided into three parts: meals and individual homework time for an hour, followed by an hour of English and an hour of math, with the day ending at 6pm. On Fridays JLC offers additional instruction programs including martial arts, dance, musical instruments, and others, for an additional fee. The individual instruction time is extremely valuable for us working parents who already have very full schedules. It's hard to squeeze in an hour before bedtime to assist kids with homework, and something that a babysitter or day care is probably not going to do. The staff is experienced with kids of varying ages and abilities, and has been great for both my son (a slower learner) and his cousins (very fast learners). Tuition rates are very reasonable, lower than any competitors I found in the area. JLC provides good services at an excellent value; highly recommended.

Previously, my children…read moreattended a private school however, with 3 children it become very expensive and therefore we discovered TLC. Free tuition! We couldn't have made a better choice! Here are the reasons we LOVE TLC: 1. Small class sizes (just like we had at our private school) 2. Feeling of welcoming, one big family! 3. Inclusive, my children have learned to interact with ALL kids! Typical or not! It truly warms our heart to see my children helping others on the playground and in classroom. 4. Teachers are responsive, and highly educated. 5. Kids are always recognized for their kindness and their success. 6. My children LOVE going to school! 7. Because of TLC's Gardening classes with Farmer Mark, the kids have created our own garden in our yard. They educate my husband and I :) 8. Teachers recognize each child's learning level. 9. All parents are welcomed to be part of the TLCCA which allows you to see what the kids are doing, help with parties, come up with fun events and help make TLC fun and engaging! 10. Homework is limited, my kids don't have excessive homework as in private schools. We get to spend more family time together playing Monopoly at home and Uno :) 11. My children are thriving! They are well educated and honestly sometimes we as parents, think they are book smarter than us :) Overall, I cannot emphasize enough about how much we love this school. Did I mention that the principal & Vice Principal know every student by name! That, I love!
