Don't ask me why this was the #1 thing I really wanted to see during my first trip to Denver of my life! Blucifer is just such a wild sculpture and has such a morbid history around it (Blucifer literally killed the artist when a piece of it that the artist was installing fell and punctured him right in his femoral artery). It's truly so odd in both placement and vibe. You can't miss it as you leave the Denver airport, you will always pass by it. It's located essentially in the middle giant island of a highway up on a hill. It's a whole royal blue colored mustang horse rearing up on its hind legs with red eyes that shine red at all hours of the day. Truly a devil horse LOL! It's definitely a sight to see, but I'm disappointed in the fact that you can't get close to it. There's no pathway to drive up close to it like a tourist stop and like I mentioned, with its located in the middle of a highway, there is really no option to pull off to the side to stop and check it out, so it also feels a bit impossible to appreciate it and take a good picture of it! Given how excited I was to see it for myself, this was a huge bummer that I had been anticipating being able to get close to it, but ultimately falling very very short of that. This 32 foot tall horse guards the entrance to Denver International Airport. A bright blue with glowing neon eyes, ain't nobody going to mess with this place! And yes, his nickname is "Blucifer" and - no kidding - he killed the artist. Yes, in 2006, a huge portion of the sculpture fell and injured the sculptor. There is no stopping or standing or parking on Peña Boulevard. There is no parking nearby. Getting to this statue is a PITA. The local cops will definitely try to move you along. Big bronco outside of the airport. It sure is big. You can see it from the train. Hard to get to unless by car. This is pretty cool to see coming and going. Cool story about this art. It killed its creator. True story. It was created by Luis Jimenez. When he was making it, a piece of it fell off. It fell on him and cut an artery in his leg. This killed him so it's kind of morbid thinking about this. After he died, his family and staff helped finish it. The eyes glow which makes it look like a demon and people often call it Blucifer because of this. It greets people heading to the airport. It's located on Pena Boulevard where it curves. Our Uber driver told us the "legend" of the statue and why it has been nicknamed "Blucifer." As the years have gone by, I have heard more of the lore surrounding the Blue Bronco and talked with fellow locals about it; I can safely say it's grown on me. Denver is a very artist friendly city. No matter what part of the city you are in there will likely be some form of art. Be it a painting, a mural, a statue, or a sculpture. I very much like works of art and try to research it's history and that of the artist. When researching the history of the Blue Mustang I found that during it's creation it fell on it's creator crushing and killing him. Which gives it's a creepy and kind of spooky vibe. Both landslide and airside lots so you get a view closer than most. Would be nice I guess if people could get closer. Then again that opens things up for vandalism. Increased roadside vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Bla Bla Bla. Really it's just a quirky art installation. Much like the rest of the airport. Props to the curator going wild and giving this airport a unique flavor. Much like Seattle with the Sub Pop record store. Or Portland, Oregon's famous carpet. And unfortunately I wasn't close enough to see that he was anatomically correct (thanks for that detail Anna B). Is he supposed to be a Bronco? So he's a celebration of sport? So I was all ready to Yelp my displeasure with the giant blue bronco. As I read through everyone's reviews it got my gears moving and I realized - Sandi D is right! OK, I can't in good conscious give something that creeps me out 5 stars, but I do concede that the piece gets people talking. Sure, maybe they are talking about how much they hate it - but they talk. Heck, I haven't been on a shuttle bus yet where SOMEONE doesn't say SOMETHING as soon as we pass the beast! I know I always crane my neck to see it. If nothing else I enjoy this horse because it elicits a response from every person that sees it. Art that gets people talking this much is a rarity in my circle so for that alone I have to say bravo. A few years ago I might have given the devil horse, as I affectionately call it, 1 star. But these days I find myself looking fondly at the horse as it welcomes me home to DIA. I just had to write a review of an object that has spooked the hell out of me for years. For those who haven't flown into Denver International Airport, there is a giant blue demon horse statue with red eyes marking the entrance to this very suspicious airport. The history of this crazy ass (literally, I will get there soon) goes back years in the making. The artist was actually killed making this thing, it fell on him!! Years late on delivery of this agent of evil, Denver still decided that this thing would be welcoming to those who are about to fly in an aluminum tube! Not going to lie to you, but after many years this thing is growing on me (not literally)! I like the tie to the Denver Broncos (Greatest team ever, if you remove a few other teams of course) and the tie to the wild mustangs that once ran these plains. I would shit my pants if I saw a giant blue mustang running wild. I go back and forth on the DIA Bronco. When I first saw it, I believe my exact reaction was, "What in the name of all that is holy is THAT??" It creeped me the heck out! It looks evil, and it probably it is evil. I mean, it killed its maker. Why do the eyes have to glow red? If we could change them to a different color, like blue, then at least the thing wouldn't look so murderous and demon-possessed. But now that I've lived in Colorado for six years and I'm starting to travel more, I find my heart smiling every time I drive past this monstrosity on my way to a new adventure. And I know that when I return, it will always be there to gaze threateningly at me in that familiar, laser stare that I've grown to associate with Home. OMG! I'm not sure what to say about this Blue Bronco. Firstly, if I don't give it a good review - I could literally die. Have you READ about this bue beast? I have heard some crazy stories including the one where the actual artist who built it died just before finishing it. A very interesting Wikipedia article for anyone interested!! But all craziness and paranoia aside, I give this statue 5 stars because it's seriously bad ass. Something this absurd, strange and large is only meant to be a conversation piece.
