John Leonard Swigert, Jr. was known as "Jack". He was born in Denver, CO in 1931…read more This bronze statue is a duplicate of the one in the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. It was created by brothers George Lundeen and Mark Lundeen. Who hasn't heard this quote, "Houston, we have a problem."? Well, actually, Jack Swigert didn't exactly say it that way. He said it this way, "Houston, we've had a problem here" regarding the oxygen tank explosion on the Apollo 13. The line is incorrectly quoted as "Houston, we have a problem" and this misquote is what we all have heard and know. Swigert was a US Air Force Pilot and a Fighter Pilot in Japan and South Korea. Jack also served as a jet fighter pilot in the Air National Guard. At age 38, he made his first and only space flight on the Apollo 13. On that mission, the Apollo 13 mission was supposed to be a moon landing but that was cancelled due to an oxygen tank explosion. The three astronauts on board returned safely. Swigert was a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom from this mission. Jack was elected to the U.S. Congress, but died of cancer before his congressional term began on December 27, 1982 in Washington, D.C.. Where is this statue located? It's in the Denver International Airport (DIA) in Terminal B. When you arrive at the Elrey B Jeppesen entrance, you need to go through TSA and take the train to B Gates, which is the second stop. You should see him when you step off the train there. Go check it out even if this isn't your terminal to fly out from. You can catch the next train on to your necessary terminal after viewing it.

They greeted us immediately and gave us a map of the property. We had fun walking around and checking out the animals and historic buildings on site. It is wild this place is right in the middle of a neighborhood. The only issue we had was parking because we the lot is full you're out of options.

Wow, my yesterday's visit to this historic park was so mesmerizing. It's because of their annual…read more(?) "Bright Nights" (originally a lantern festival.) It is said that they unveil a brand new theme each year and this year's theme appears to be focused on some Eastern cultures such as cherry blossom and bamboo forest with pandas. Not that I have been to many lights shows and yet I must say that I have never seen anything quite like this as far as my recollection is accurate. In its 12-acre land, the installations of lantern lights are everywhere. After 8:30pm or so when it's dark, the illuminations from the lanterns are glowing brighter than Las Vegas' illuminations (LOL - why am I comparing this to Las Vegas!!) According to the park's website, some of the sculptures are 23-foot tall (such as the cherry blossom gate.) It's currently open from Wednesday through Sunday until October 5th. And last night's was one of the adult-only nights where you must be 21+ to enter (I believe the next and last such night is Sept 17th. And this writing is as of late August of 2025.) I am already curious as to what the next year's theme is going to be. There is a centralized bar, some food vendors, a stage where a performer performs, and a DJ booth. Great for family time, girls' night or date night. Helpful staff were working tirelessly to assist all visitors. Although about 1,300 tickets were sold last night, it was never super jammed packed. There is still time to visit this enchanting light show. Not only for the locals but definitely one of the must-visit attractions for out-of-staters as well.

It's between the incoming and outgoing lanes of Peña Blvd, where it turns from east-west to north-south. But right there, you cant pull over, or even slow down. The closest drive is the ramp from southbound Peña to northbound, but that ramp was closed when we were there. From further away, to get a full front-view, find the curve south of Peña on 75th Av at Harry B Combs Pkwy or near the UPS center at Robertsdale St. It's not a busy road, so you can pull over briefly. You can also get a nice profile-view from the curve on 78th Av north of Peña. There must be a great view from the permit-only parking lot at that curve. After dark, the statue's eye glow a burning red! We were there during the day this time. (Summer 2026). But even a daytime drive-by on Peña Blvd is pretty cool.

I mean, how could you NOT love a ginormous blue mustang statue rearing up with piercing red laser eyes? Makes for really great scenes at night with some clouds in the skies nearby too. A little bit of an eerie tidbit, but the creator of the piece, Luis Jiménez, was tragically killed when a piece of it fell on him in 2006, severing a leg artery, causing him to bleed to death on the floor. It allegedly unnerves some locals but as a certified forced to travel weird girl, it's neat! Just don't look between the legs, allegedly it's super veiny and detailed... I found a cute reusable recycled tote bag at the Denver airport with a chibi Blucifer on it, so merch does exist too!

There are several bars and a nice restaurant on-site. I was upgraded to the executive suite and it was very spacious and comfortable. I was concerned that the metro being right outside the living room area would be noisy but I didn't hear it at all! The check in was easy with dedicated line for Bonvoy elite members. About a 5-minute walk to check-in/luggage drop area. -Note for cat owners: There's a lot of hiding spots for cats, so if you have an early flight, set aside extra time to herd them out. Luckily, one of our cats hid in the bathroom the entire time and the other has decent recall and would come out of underneath the bed when called.
