I admit, I am a beer guy. I judge beer and have won many medals brewing my own. The Blue Max is a beer lovers dream. The Four Firkin's is the only equal in the Twin Cities. Blue Max is located in a strip mall about a mile off of 35. When you walk in the whole store is basically a line of beer fridges labelled by country. Belgium, Scottish, Ireland, etc... Plus you can make your own six packs of beers you haven't tried. Last time I was there they had Bigfoot Barleywine going back to about 2001. Heaven. The prices are not cheap, but for good beer you can't find a better selection in the Twin Cities! read more

Great selection at competitive prices! (I sound like an advertisement, perhaps in this hyper-consumptive society we are now in, I am nothing more than an advertisement. Have you ever seen the movie They Live, check it out, get the glasses). I like categories, so enjoyed that they have a whole refrigerator for just Belgians. But I worry about the repercussions the referring to a group of beer as "Belgians," as it then works to essentialize a whole nation of people as being like the beer that they happen to export. Although, I've never thought about the people of Belgium as being like bananas and buggle-gum (this is a tell-tale taste of the standard Belgian style of beer). The store is clean and organized (not unlike Belgium) (but that's a stereotype) (and if you listen to the right wing nationalists, Belgium is at risk of being dirty and disorganized because of immigrants. But this is historically what all nationalists from anywhere always say about foreigners, even the Japanese thought this of the first Europeans to arrive). I was just lectured by the liquor bitch at Blue Max Liquors about them not taking cash right now with the virus going around. I work in the service industry and never once did I tell my residents off the way I was talked to today. There is a way of expressing yourself without your customers feeling demeaned. While I was in the Minneapolis area for the Surly Darkness 2008 festival I had a number of people recommend this Liquor store as a must visit. The selection is great and the prices as just as good. Along with a friendly staff. Binny's and Sam's here in Chicago still have a lot more choices, but Blue Max was still top notch. One thing that the Blue Max had over other stores was that they have a fridge full of a bunch of vintage beers. They didn't have anything in it I recognized but was really interesting to see. read more

If you want service and to be walked directly to the beer or liquor you are looking for, this us your personable liquor store. The people working there can also describe what the craft beers taste like and offer recommendations. As a newbie to Moscow Mule cocktails I learned there are alcoholic free ginger beers and ginger beers with alcohol. Recommendations on good vodka was also welcomed. I've shopped here for over 17 years. Its not your Total Wine volume store. Their prices are competitive. They are knowledgeable. 4/5 as I wish they would offer beer, wine or spirit tasting. Even once a year. The store is very small. Parking lot is adequate. Support local business. Service is awesome here and are super friendly. read more

This place has a bigger beer selection than Trump's ego! Seriously, they have almost 1200 beers. They are organized by type or region and you can pick your own six pack. They also have a great stock of whiskeys, so make sure you spend a few minutes there as well. I missed it at first because I was distracted by the amazing selection of beer. Another great thing is that the staff are very helpful and knowledgeable, I love beer and have tried a fair number of craft and micro brews over the years, but when I come here, I feel like a total newbie. Fear not! The staff are there to help and answer any question you may have. They are not just people throwing stuff on shelves, Oh no, they are busy sampling their wares. Blue Max changed ownership late fall 2019. it is no longer owned by the same founding family. The great beer, scotch and bourbon selection that made Blue Max a destination type store was curated by Jim and Dale, both of whom are no longer working there. So far, the place appears similar, but it no longer has the familiar vibe and long-time customer relationship that existed there over the last 25 years or so that I have been shopping there. Virtually nobody is working there now that was there in 2019. The personal touch is missing. Added to these changes is the current pandemic, of course. We'll see what transpires if that ever ends. read more

This place rocks! If you love beer, get over there. I've heard that they've won awards for having the biggest beer selection in Minnesota and I wouldn't doubt it. There's a guy that works there (the owner?) that is insanely knowledgeable. He helped me select $100+ of beer to secretly stock my husband's "beer" fridge. That gift went over very well I might add. As other reviewers have said, the beer is divided into country of origin which is kinda fun. When you return from your travels abroad, just go to Blue Max to relive your foreign beer consumption experiences. Also, worth a mention is the Italian place "Giuseppe's" in the strip mall next door. Selections is pretty much awesome. Being a CA resident, 60% of the stuff they had were never seen there. Some surprisingly vintages here. The retired Clown Shoes 3rd Party Candidate still sitting there before they started distributing to CA, the weighty ceramic Southern Star Blind Ambition in the fridge... Also the variety of Tyranena "Brewers Gone Wild" packs, cans from Indeed, lots of stuff indeed. Too bad the singles section is meager, not much to choose from. Most of the six-packs sat in the fridge apparently couldn't be broken. The guys working in there are very friendly and would exert extra afford to help you finding things. They open at 9:30 am, so don't go too early. read more

I decided to stop at this place since it was close to where I was staying and rated pretty decently on BeerAdvocate. The selection is decent with quite a few beers in the coolers. I had asked for a beer that wasn't in the cooler to take home and age but was told... "I am sure we have some in back but it's too much of a pain to go get it." I wanted the beer so I grabbed the cold one. As I was walking up to the counter with my arms full I went to sent down the beers on the counter because it was so heavy. I was then told "Not There! Bring it over here". Customer service here is pretty bad. I will gladly make the 30 minute drive to a different place just to avoid coming here in the future. read more

Best beer selection I have ever seen! WOW. This is the liquor store to go to, especially if you are looking for good local beers, imports and Bourbon's! They obviously carry anything else you might want, (except maybe a case of every light beer out there) and the staff is very friendly and helpful. Couldn't ask for anything more. Blue Max is my neighborhood liquor store, and sadly that may be the best selling point of my neighborhood... Blue Max has a super helpful staff. If you have a question about beer, wine, champagne, or whatever, they will try to get you the answer. They will help you carry your merchandise to your car if you need help as well. Like others have mentioned, their beer selection is second to none. From all countries around the world and microbreweries in the US, you can find the best and worst beer here. Although, if you are looking for cheap cheap beer (of keystone light variety for bringing to softball games) they have a fairly small selection, and you might have better luck at other stores. At any rate, it is a great store with a friendly staff. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. read more

It's a mystical place in a sense... names of beer and funky labels that one could only dream up! This is the place to be if you are into microbrews! It's like traveling without the plane ticket since there are beers from all over. The staff is helpful and friendly. It's a smaller place so it's cozy and conversations with strangers flourish with all the variety. Beware though, it's tough to make a decision! read more

Blue Max has one of the best selections of beer in the Twin Cities. I was able to fine a couple of varieties that I've been craving for months (in particular, a couple of the Lips of Faith brews from New Belgium). Everyone talks about the awesome collection of beers and that is true. But if you are looking for fine single malt Scotch? They have that too! An entire wall of single malt Scotch that you just can't find anywhere else. This is absolutely the best collection of single malt Scotch I have ever seen in a Minnesota liquor store. From the common to the incredibly rare, it's all here! Prices can't be beat. Top notch in Scotch! And yes they are the leader in beer selections but you already know that. read more

Found Mythos beer here. I owed my g/f a bottle so she could try it. she called around everywhere to find it and was told a few times you could only buy that beer by the case because that's what the liquor store had to buy it in. Complete rubbish! Blue Max had it in a 6 pack and it wasn't much more than MGD or Bud. Thanks Blue Max!! Next time I or a friend am looking for a hard to find drink, I'm definitely checking with Blue Max! read more

Making beer pilgrimages here is totally worth it! Definitely the broadest selection of beer in the Twin Cities (maybe Minnesota), and also in competition for best-cultivated (though Four Firkins is close!). The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, as are the patrons -- sometimes it's hard to tell who works there and who is shopping since everyone wants to impart their beer knowledge. I would definitely recommend this store for any beer lover. Outstanding selection of single malt scotch as well. read more

If you live in Minneapolis/St. Paul it's worth the drive. The thing I really love about this place (and wish other places would copy) is the way they organize their beer. They have coolers separated by country, so if you're looking for a "insert country here" beer go to the ______ cooler, etc. The real reason to go here, though, is that they carry beers that you won't find many other places. read more

Amazing selection! I would even say that their selection of beer is better than most. They were very helpful and had great recommendations. I only give it 4 because they didn't have everything I was looking for, but I am sure they can get it for you. This place has the BEST beer selection around. I always find great beers here, ones I have never heard if before. Lots of European beers too if that's your style. The wine selection isn't huge but I don't come here for that. The staff is also very helpful. read more
