I was traveling back to California and was looking for a place to camp for the night so I yelped…read moreand up to a list of campgrounds in Eastern Iowa. One wasn't rated but that didn't scare me. I called and a nice person named Annette answered and said that yes they were open. I found the place with help from signs leading to the place. I was met and checked in with Annette. Found out that I would have a tent area to myself as it was during the week. I bought some firewood and Annette's husband John delivered it to my site, which was on the river. Very peaceful. They had the usual amenities I.E full hookups plus volleyball, horseshoe pits, showers, hiking and horse trails and a nice beach. John and Annette have a real nice place there. Go check it out.

We've camped here two years in a row. Last year we really enjoyed it and this year we feel as…read morethough the campground as a whole has regressed. The staff has been very friendly. The things that have declined in the past year: 1) The pool - it's now extremely dirty, the bottom is slimy and slick because it hasn't been cleaned and there is dirt everywhere. 2) The wibit has changed and gotten smaller than it was last year. 3) The expensive firewood was so wet the two times we ordered it that it wouldn't burn after an hour of trying everything. 4) The quality of food has decreased significantly. Last year we really enjoyed the fresh squeezed lemonade and the pizza, however, this year it was super disappointing (especially for the price you pay). 5) The amount of bugs and flies is almost unBEARable, (see what I did there). I understand we are camping and that there are going to be bugs, but this is excessive to the point where we didn't want to sit outside to eat or enjoy a potential fire, because they were attacking from every direction (despite candles, spraying the grass around our site and bug spray). Overall, there are still some things we would return for, but super sad that it isn't the experience we had last year.

We were quiet, no music on just enjoying a fire with friends but the owner insisted that we go to bed. He would creep up on us and yell at us, he put our fire out using buckets of water and turned the electricity off to neighboring campers thinking they were ours. He did this to other groups of paying customers as well. The owners also kept sneaking around the different campsites watching people, when you questioned them on this their reply was that they were filming us?!?!?!? To avoid them we went into our camper, and he proceeded to come up to the window with a device and say again that he was filming us. If you want to have a fun relaxing weekend of camping DO NOT CAMP HERE!!

We visited Sugar Bottom for a beach day. The area was beautiful! It has a number of paths and what…read moreseems like a nice camping area (although we weren't there for that). The beach area was spacious--lots of room to spread out on the sand. The beach also has a couple of good shady spots, which is helpful on a hot day. However, we ended up heading over to the Lake MacBride beach because the Sugar Bottom area was a little less lively. Could have just been the day, but we were looking for somewhere more high energy on a summer weekend afternoon. They also don't have the boat rental options that MacBride beach has. If you do like quiet spaces then this would be the place! It also seems great if you have kids (which we don't) because there is just more space to run around. Just be prepared to bring all of your own entertainment.

Boat dock available, and honors system firewood available in the evening. We did reservations through Recreation.gov and that made check in super easy! We brought our 2 Yorkies, and about 1/3 or more of the campers also brought dogs. Lots of trees, but also well mowed green spaces. This is now on our top 10 for Iowa campgrounds! Several spots right next to the bathroom / shower house, and great areas for larger camping groups. Would like to see a couple more updates to the shower facility. The water temp was fully adjustable-a knob rather than a button type, so you could have water the full duration of your shower. The water pressure was great, temperature great, but tile could use some updating. That may be in the works because the lighting was motion sensor and LED. There was also a ceiling fan which helped discourage bugs in the bathhouse!

The park is always kept up nice except for the areas with the geese... you know what I mean... my favorite is to have a picnic in the park and walk the trails in the spring, fall, and summer. Even in the winter the trails are beautiful and they never get old. Definitely check this park out.

Site let us book site #4 even asking for size of rig, but once we arrived Large signage read-No Big Rigs ,narrow to no turn around for this site. We disconnected our tow car and drove around looking for a spot. We were able to locate site 30 which read 45 ft with full hook ups. However we barely at 40 ft fit,even had to back up Over fire ring to fit and park our tow. We then saw it is electric only,Not full hook ups. We are parked and staying for our original 3 nights, however we are very disappointed at the discrepancy in the description of park,it is really for for TT,Campers, tents..id say 34 ft max for sites. Make sure you scout your site first to assure you will fit
