It's like one long tunnel surrounding by shops with a connection to a bus terminal. It's a great mall for the neighborhood hosting a some larger stores like Walmart, Independent Grocer, Dollarama, and Natural Food Pantry. I did take a stroll to the second floor where the food court was. It did not look very appealing so we left and didn't check out the restaurants. We ended our stroll through the mall with an ice cream at Laura Secord, which was great and headed home. Overall, its an A-OK mall for the neighborhood but nothing outstanding where I would go out of my way and go back to.

Thats not the malls fault I thought there was one, thats googles fault. It is the malls fault I had to wall the whole length of the mall to find that out, because the only map I could find is up in the food court. The last three times I was here, it was a disappointing waste of time so we would be better off if this mall just closed. Its going to happen eventually.

I first came here to watch a movie at the Cineplex. I saw Yesterday on my birthday and then came back the following day to shop. The stores here suit my needs. I love Winners, Marshalls, and Chapters. I got great deal! All three are close together that you don't need to move your car. I had lunch at Kelsey's and shopped at Roots. Both places are away from all the clustered boxed stores, facing Bank Street. There used to be a Globo, but that has since closed down and remains empty. It's a cool place to shop, take in a movie, and eat. (235)

If you don't know anything about this Herongate Mall, consider yourself lucky. If you are wondering where it is, it's east of Bank Street, basically where Heron & Walkley Road intersect. It is one of Ottawa's worst eyesores. As long as I can remember, this mall suffers from terribly unattractive architecture. I have never felt this is a place where anyone would feel comfortable to shop. The whole mall exudes a very depressing feeling of abandonment. The mall features a dungy, filthy, treeless parking lot along with the out-of-the-way location. It definitely caters to lower income shoppers with the Dollarama and Food Basics being the anchor stores. It's just a matter of time before the mall is closed for good. According to the Ottawa Citizen in 2010: "City of Ottawa documents confirm that Ottawa Public Health has made multiple visits to the mall in the past year and that Ottawa Fire Services responded to complaints of blocked exits and water damage to ceilings during the same time period." If there are vermin and unsanitary washrooms where food and groceries are being sold (as store owners alledged in the Citizen article) ... clean it up, or shut it down! Literally every second shop is empty. Everything still operating looks ready to close at any minute. If Food Basics wasn't here, Herongate Mall would be completely empty.

There's a pharmacy, grocery store, bank, pizza place, and some retail stores, but all of the businesses are seeing serious Some of the owners themselves have even made complaints to Ottawa Public Health about mice, flies, water damage, broken toilets, and other health and safety hazards. There were plans for redevelopment a few years ago, but they never panned out. Now they say another company plans to develop it by the Summer 2011. I hope they actually deliver, otherwise it'll finally meet its end.

They have quiet a few different options like Burrito Gringo, Taco bell/KFC, Tim Hortons, ect. They also have some food options on the first floor like Kernels, Cinnabon and Purdy's where you can get scoops of ice cream. The light rail also connects to this mall which is nice. What I find this mall lacks: Clothing stores like H&M, and Zara, and a Sephora would be nice. I find they have an outdated selection of stores and I would love to see new ones pop up. Parking is parking, its never fun during busy holiday times, and it can get a bit messy here (nothing compares to parking at Bayshore though, lol). I don't come here to drop a pretty penny, more so just to walk around and hit up some of the food options and Toys R Us when I am trying to kill some time.

While waiting for the traffic lights to change, I liked seeing a store directory. I came here without any knowledge of the stores here. I liked coming here to figure it out. The Trainyards is like Heartland Town Centre in Mississauga. It is a bunch of stores that cover a lot of land. Think of it as a neighbourhood of stores. You have to strategically figure out where to park and walk to the stores that are around you. During my visit, I parked a grand total of three times. I stopped by Michaels and got some good items that were on sale. I was a happy shopper! I then parked in front of the Gap outlet. I also visited Old Navy and Sail that were on either side of the store. I then decided to drive and check out what other stores were there. I spotted Kettleman's Bagel Co. and parked to have lunch. The selection of stores is cool. If you are more of a mall shopper, this setup may not be for you. If you do like box stores, you'd like it here. My only problem I had was dealing with a woman in a minivan who was waiting for me to leave my spot to pull through. She actually honked at me. I didn't appreciate it and gave her a signal to say that I was staying. I was pulling up my GPS and I was under no obligation to move out of a parking spot to convenience an impatient idiot. (289)

It is beautifully decorated on the inside, as well, with wide halways, granite walls, and art works on display. I have been to this building for many a special occasion, from courses in their training facilities upstairs, to dinner at the Baton Rouge, and coffee at the Starbucks - all attached to and easily accessible from inside this building. It's massive, covering an entire city block from Lyon to Kent Streets. They offer a fitness centre, and I believe there is also a daycare in here too. Also offered is underground parking, where you can park for free after 5:00pm when you go to the Baton Rouge. I am sure I will be back there.

However, since most of the shops and restaurants have exterior entrances AND several of the offices are in operation beyond 6pm and on weekends so if you are working outside of regular business hours, come break time there is absolutely nowhere to grab a bite because this beautiful building trust takes up an entire city block just shuts down. Meaning one would have to travel at least a block in any direction to find some food. Quite frustrating that the building's services don't fully support those working within.

I…read moredecided to walk down a block and check out this street that I hadn't set foot on for at least a decade. Sparks Street Mall is essentially a pedestrian strip mall with a bunch of shops, eateries, and more. It's nice, especially with various performances scattered along the street to celebrate the country's national day. I dig that you don't have to deal with traffic along this street, especially on Canada Day. It was nice casually roaming around, seeing how everyone was into wearing red and white, and taking paper Canada flags from folks to wave around. I have a few memories visiting this stretch over the years. There was a time where I was so busy with work that being on vacation made me realize that I should get a haircut. I started getting haircuts on vacation. My first one was at a salon on Sparks Street. I don't recall the name of it. I'm pretty sure that it is long gone. It was owned by a husband and wife team. They were hands-on running the business, and did all the hair cutting and styling. I recently had lunch at Bier Markt. I realized that it had taken over the old Zellers store, along with Winners at the corner. The eatery was buzzing. It looks a bit weird seeing a huge patio in front of a store that I loved. I bought a Jann Arden CD and a portable CD player at this Zellers. It brought back some cool memories. I also remember some sort of public service announcement (PSA) on television of a woman rattling off, "56 Sparks Street. Ottawa," as a young kid. I was perhaps four years old at the time, already exhibiting a thing for numbers. I didn't know what she was talking about, though. Well, I did visit 56 Sparks Street on my most recent trip. There was a sign on the building. She actually said, "This is Lotta Hitschmanova of the Unitarian Service. 56 Sparks Street. Ottawa," in this PSA. I'm pretty sure that I couldn't spell this woman's name as a four-year-old kid. I still can't as an adult. She was attempting to get Canadians to help others in need in far away places. Lotta held a PhD in philosophy and died in 1990. The Unitarian Service of Canada still exists, but under SeedChange. It is still at 56 Sparks Street. Ottawa. I managed to take in an outdoor musical performance in front of the CBC-Radio Canada building. I nearly bought bubble tea at a small ramen place before the thunderstorms and rain caused everyone to seek shelter. Great memories getting caught in a downpour without an umbrella are now with me. Luckily, I had a Canada cap on and managed to walk to my car parked at the National Arts Centre. This stretch is cool, with a lot of history and self-discovery. I always learn so much when I'm walking along streets as a tourist and spot buildings of interest. It forces me to do some research if an informational sign isn't there for me to read. The Post Office building at 59 Sparks Street is a good example, with a running Canada Post across from it. I feel that this street is more for tourists like me. If you're into shopping, box stores elsewhere would be better. If you're staying downtown, it's cool coming here to check it out. I love the history. I also love the charm of souvenir shops and eateries with live music outdoors on dry days that makes this street cool. (256)

There is not a lot of shopping, but there is a Winners, and who doesn't love Winners? Sparks Street also holds events on the strip like the Ribfest, poutine fest as well as pop up night markets. The strip is decked out during the holidays with tons of beautiful lights. Access to the LRT and a quick walk to the Parliament.

Once upon a time, I lived nearby and would shop at the Loblaws grocery store regularly (it's smaller than most, but still sufficient). These days I'm rarely at this plaza. It does have a large Rexall drug store, an LCBO (liquor store) that always carded me when no other place did, lol, (I commend them for being thorough and doing their part to prevent underaged drinking), a local library branch, a Home Hardware, and a few other businesses. There are lots of food options too, Starbucks, Pizza Pizza, Kelsey's, Urban Indian Cafe, Capital Shawarma, Oh Basil and Fat Albert's. There are also lots of medical and dental clinics in this plaza (family practice, optometric, dental, and a place that does endoscopies and colonoscopies!). I've pretty much only been to Loblaws, Rexall, the LCBO and the restaurants, which were all satisfactory. There's lots of free parking.

OMG, I can't believe that this is called a "shopping centre." It's an office building that happens…read moreto have a few shops on the main floor. This is convenient and great for people who work in the office building (like suppose I spill coffee on my white blouse, then I can go down to Cleo and buy a new one, or if the straps on my laptop bag give out, then I can run down to Bentley's and buy a new one), but if you are making a special trip here to shop, you will be gravely disappointed. Other than Cleo and Bentley's, I can't even name the other stores. There's a convenience store, a place that sells prepared food and basic groceries (like Kitchen Table in Toronto) and a handful of other stores. Since this place (I can't even get myself to call it a "shopping centre") caters to the people who work in the office building everything closes really early. All the restaurants in the food court upstairs close at like 3:00pm except for the Chinese food place. The one cool thing about the food court is that it's all independent restaurants, no chains that I can remember. The women's washrooms on the food court level is full of graffiti and kind of creepy in my opinion. I've been to many "shopping centres" with office buildings on top (Commerce Court, Bay-Adelaide Centre, First Canadian Place, TD Centre, etc. - all in Toronto) and they are all much better. This place is a dud.
