Westgate Shopping Centre is a sad little mall :( I shop here sometimes because I feel bad for it…read more The anchor store is Shoppers Drug Mart, which is open 24 hours a day, everyday, even Christmas and New Year's!! The food court has only 3 selections. A Subway sandwiches, a shawarma place and a Thai place. At every visit, I noticed that most of the people sitting at the food court are scratching lottery tickets. There is also a Second Cup and a sit down restaurant called Rockin' Johnny's. There is a Kardish Health Food Store in this mall, which is cool, and the Marianne's has lots of specialty lingerie and unique clothes with Canadian brands like Neon Buddha (although a bit pricey). There's a shoe store there called Carducci's which looks like a cheap shoe store, but carries awesome brands like Fly London, Miz Mooz and Blondo (at expensive prices though)! There is also a dollarstore, a Wine Rack, a place that sells scrubs (healthcare uniforms, not facial scrubs), and a handful of independent stores. Oh, and an Ottawa Gold (so you can sell your unwanted gold). This mall would likely be disappointing to anyone who hails from a place with a population greater than 5000. It is not an awesome shopping experience. But I feel that it has its own little charm in a sad pathetic way, the same way that Galleria Mall on Dupont St. in Toronto does (or at least did in the 80s). Apparently this Mall opened in 1955 and it's Ottawa's oldest Mall. Kind of cool for historical reasons, I guess. Despite its age, this mall is not poorly kept. It is relatively clean. It is not scary or anything like that. It reminds me of a small town shopping plaza. Nonetheless, I go here at least once a month o_O

Oh, poor little Westgate. I can't figure out how the mall hasn't been gutted and revamped. That, or…read moreturned into something else by now. You've likely made your way to this somewhat odd mall if you're in search of: 1) A 24hour Shoppers 2) A Service Ontario centre 3) A sweet straight razor shave at the barbershop I've come here for all of the above - though not a straight razor shave - HA, but my bf swears this is the best barbershop in Ottawa, and I've sat on the bench a time or two waiting for him. Surprisingly, there's a gem of a salon in this place as well, which I've already reviewed (L'Image). Other than those 4 things, and the sweet girls that work at Second Cup, this place leaves a lot to be desired. It's old, grey, interior is dreary and the food court has about 3 spots (a Subway, Shawarma Spot and I believe a new Greek place) and the store selection caters mostly to the elderly. Now that I think of it, perhaps this older generation is what keeps this place going. There's some speciality shoe stores, a dollar store, some clothing stores and a few healthcare spots but really nothing to get excited about. I suppose it serves a purpose, but I really think a facelift is in order. Bust out some paint and inject this place with at least a little bit of cheer.

Wellington West - Christmas season in front of The Salvation Army Grace Manor

Wellington West

Wellington West is a cool, trendy neighbourhood west of downtown Ottawa. I recently got the grand…read moretour from my friend. It was my first visit here. This Yelp listing has the Wellington West Business Improvement Area (BIA) site as a reference. That site lists Hintonburg as one of Wellington West's communities. It's fitting, as they both exude a trendy vibe that is refreshing and nice. This neighbhourhood has many retail stores, eateries, grocery stores, churches, and more. It's a good mix. It's almost a dream for me to live in this area and walk to a business without thinking of parking. It's kind of like my old neighbourhood of the Beaches, but less preppy and a bit further from a body of water. We ducked in and out of stores during this walking tour, partly because the stores were cool and worth checking out. The other reason was that we needed relief from sweating buckets on a hot July afternoon. We could probably write a guide on which stores have the most effective air conditioning and which ones will take longer for you to cool down when you're inside the stores... haha I like quirkiness. There is a series of marble fire hydrant statues that my friend had mentioned. We walked by many of them and I had to capture their coolness. From corn, to a violin, you get to see a lot of creativity go into each hydrant's design. It's like going to the Twin Cities to find all the Snoopy and Charlie Brown Statues. It's more abstract and refined with marble. Hintonburg is similar. It's still trendy and cool, but it has a more established, older charm when you see a church here and there. Well, except for the half-fallen Hintonburg letters. Again, I like quirkiness. I like that you have Parkdale public market here. Although it wasn't fulyl open when we were there, it's nice that you can get fresh produce and local eats. I learned that it's the second-oldest market in Ottawa, behind ByWard Market. Nice! I wouldn't say that I am now an expert visiting both neighbourhoods for the first time. I had a wonderful introduction, especially checking out places to have a cold drink on a hot day because I was super thirst after a salty meal. To wish that the marble hydrants had water out of them was a thought that came to me. In a way, I'm glad that I could quench my thirst at other places! I liked how friendly and lovely everyone was. I hope to return soon with not-as-tired legs from walking around and sandals that I am not breaking in a day later. (294)

I had no idea that Wellington West was even a listing on Yelp until it popped up in my feed. It's…read morelisted under "Shopping Centres" but it isn't so much a shopping centre as a neighbourhood or several neighbourhoods. I myself would call it a "Local Flavour" in Yelp speak. It's the stretch of street starting in the west from where Richmond Rd becomes Wellington St West and ending in the east where Wellington St West becomes Somerset St. There are many retail shops, restaurants, grocery stores, markets, yoga studios, art galleries, churches, etc. along this strip. Some places are very affordable (there's a St. Vincent de Paul which is a thrift store where you can get pants for $1) and some places are very high end (like Valamode that sells pre-loved Chanel purses for about $3000 each), so there's a real mix of businesses. The stretch is very walkable, and there are lots of places to duck in and out if it's really hot or really cold outside, or if it's raining or snowing. With so much variety, I'm sure there are businesses in Wellington West to suit any tastes. Some of my favourite places in Wellington West are Stella Luna (awesome gelato), Strawberry Blonde Bakery (yummy gluten-free bakery, their donut holes are amazing), AMH and Second Glance (both consignment stores), Max's Shoe Repair (they sell really funky shoes), and Absinthe and Allium (both great date restaurants). In the fall there's Taste of Wellington West, which is an event where restaurants in Wellington West offer free samples of their foods on the sidewalks. There are usually sidewalk sales and some street performers during this event as well. If you haven't been to Wellington West, it's worth the trip to check it out.

I've been debating about reviewing this Walmart for awhile now, since come on, it's a WalMart and…read morehow can it really vary much from the other locations right? Well, I've been there quite a few times recently and decided it was time to break it down for you guys. If you're choosing to shop here, you might want to rethink it. Or at least go with a list and be prepared for the wait of a lifetime. The parking lot is massive and there's tons of other stuff around there now like a Second Cup, Mucho Burrito, a Spa, bank and Zaki's. My first issue with this place is the carts. Every time I've been here I've had to wait for a cart. I don't know if they simply don't have enough or the carts don't come back fast enough, but come on, you're a giant freaking Walmart, you should be able to have enough carts for your customers. Since this is a superstore it's got pretty much everything including a huge grocery selection, photo and imaging station and pharmacy along with all of Walmart's normal departments. In that regard it's pretty much like any other Walmart I've been to. Here's where it's different: Twice now, I've gone here to get some miscellaneous groceries, house supplies and such and had to leave my stuff at the cash register because the cashier had no idea what she was doing. The first time there were two people ahead of me, and the cashier didn't know how the enter coupons. Instead of calling for help she just kind of stood there and hoped she would figure it out. I waited for 15 minutes with one other person ahead of me, because the other person bailed. The second time this happened I was waiting for 25 minutes with one other person ahead of me who was complaining that the cashier wasn't entering the price for the produce right. The cashier literally went back and forth with another cashier trying to sort it out. Worst of all? No apologies, no eye contact, nothing with myself and the rest of the lineup. Ugh. In terms of he store itself, yes it has probably everything you need or want, and the grocery section is much cheaper than Loblaws. That being said, the produce isn't great and they don't have as much selection as some other spots. I usually come here for things like paper towel and laundry detergent and the prices are great for that kind of stuff. The place is massive and still new, so it's pretty clean and well stocked. 3/30

This is an absolutely terrible store. For many reasons. I…read moreused to visit on Sunday evenings but was put off by the smell of spoiled produce immediately inside the front door. Concurrently, there was signage advising us the store had won a award. I've been unable to locate items I need and the staff are passively hostile. On my last visit I had to flag down a young man wearing a yellow vest after I was unable to locate a printer cartridge I needed. He quickly checked through the display and advised me it wasn't there. Then he suggested I return about eight hours later as stock would be replenished. This happened early in the morning. I thought about asking him to check in the back but his attitude was so cavalier I didn't want the further frustration. I've not returned.

The anchor store is Loblaws, which is quite large with a good Joe Fresh (clothing) selection. There is also a medical clinic in the Loblaws. There's an LCBO and Rexall Pharmacy here. The retail stores are Aldo, Le Chateau, Addition Elle, Reitman's, Bath and Body Works, Carter's Osh Kosh, Dynamite, Femme Carriere, Guess, Tommy Hilfiger and New Balance. The Aldo and Le Chateau are outlets, so they have stuff from past seasons. The Femme Carriere here has a large clearance section. There's a Chatters here too (hair salon that sells salon products). And a BMO, a computer store called NCIX, and a Roger's Video. The only real restaurant here is Chances R. For food though there's a Timothy's Coffee and an Extreme Pita as well. There's a long lane way (next to Loblaws) that connects the square to another area like an annex of sorts. This other area has a Home Depot (with a Harvey's inside), Pizza Pizza, McDonald's, Tim Horton's and Subway. I go here sometimes mostly to check out the Femme Carriere clearance section and the Le Chateau outlet.

In the years I have been coming here, there have not been a lot of good restaurants to choose from in this plaza: "Chances R" has been there only for ever! But more recently, a snazzy new Kettleman's Bagel, and a Popeye's have also opened up.These last two are not sit-down-get-service types of restaurants, but they are still popular. There's also a Tim Horton's nearby. The fact that there are so many take-away restaurants that succeed in this mall says a lot about the clientele here. Loblaws is indeed the anchor store (as Jennifer P noted). I have been frequenting their take out prepared foods counter, and I'm pleased to see the variety of take out dishes that are ready for you, such as: fresh prepared sushi, various salads: vegetables and / or potato, as well as macaroni salad. Loblaws also provides the chain store standard of a whole prepared chicken for about $8.00 (this is usually too much for me to eat alone, just before going to class!) This mall is sort of a big box store mall, a bit like an outlet mall - although I'm not convinced that the prices are any better than anywhere else. However, there is a good selection of stores here. Lots of clothing and shoe stores. It would seem that we as Canadians really enjoy our coffee, as this mall also has a Timothy's, and across the street at the college, there's a Starbucks in the Commons building. I can attest that the parking lot at College Square is pretty much always full! So, do drive carefully.

This event was a lot of fun, and very well planned, with lots of people discovering this store for the first time. This store and the event gives the mall an extra star, IMHO. Kudos to them for their enthusiasm and multiculturalism. I really appreciated that! Wandering the halls of the mall, looking for the event, I passed quite a few closed stores, and a couple of offices which were already closed (it was past 5:30pm), but a few stores were still open. I passed the food court, where there are several tables and chairs in a fenced in area, where there were a few groups seated and chattering away, as well as one group of 3 men playing a game of backgammon; it's a long time since I saw anyone play that, or played it myself! As for the mall, it's unfortunate that the Walmart left this mall; this mall was quiet before, but at least then there was reason to go to the mall. At least there is still a Metro store there (if you live in the neighbourhood), and there are a couple of other interesting stores in this mall: the Ontario Service Centre where you can renew your driver's license and Health Card, and a Training Facility for hair dressers where they offer $10 haircuts to anyone willing to let a student cut their hair (the cut is supervised by a trainer, so should not be too bad). One place I do like in this mall is the Buster's Restaurant. I've been there a couple of times and enjoyed it.
