I have always been a fan of blue frog, they make the best apricot danish I've ever tasted. The quality of this place is undeniable. I'm writing because I just had one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had and I am hoping blue frog will take note. It's my mother's 60th birthday and I'm trying to order her a cake. I looked around on yelp at a local bakeries and somebody raved about a coconut cake at blue frog. I laid out several options for my mom to choose from and that's the one she liked. So I called blue frog to ask about the coconut cake and what size a cake I might need to serve 10 people, and the person I spoke to seemed like she was not interested in talking to me and didn't know a lot about the cakes they offer. I thanked her and hung up, then called back a week later. This time I spoke to a woman who was so unfriendly I hung up in the middle of our conversation. She was outrageously rude. I called back a few days later and spoke to another woman who just didn't know much about their business and asked me to call back later. I called back at the time she suggested and nobody picked up the phone for several tries. Eventually the very rude person picked up again, I tried to order my coconut cake and again she was so rude I hung up in the middle of our conversation. I tried to send them a personal email to let them know this has happened and it was impossible to find such an email address on their website. Blue frog! The best food in the world will not help your buisness if I cannot buy it from you! I may give you another shot but I am pretty sure you have lost a customer. I'm OK with that if you are. PS I bought a different expensive cake at whole foods for my wife's 40th birthday last month, and they were unbelievably friendly and helpful. And I hate giving Whole Foods business. Meh. Came in for the almond croissant, and it was laughably bad. I'm not even sure it can be called a croissant. It was more like a tough, bready crescent roll stuffed with a filling that tasted like marzipan. Had that overly sweet and fake almond extract flavor just like the grocery store tubes of almond paste. Also got a cinnamon muffin. It was tasty. Nothing I couldn't make myself. read more

I rarely write negative reviews, but I've never had such bad luck with a bakery. I don't understand why it's so hard to order a cake from here. Either I have really awful timing or this place needs to better organize. I volunteered at Taste of the Nation a few months back and had the pleasure of meeting Blue Frog's owner. A nice person who's clearly a talented baker. I was surprised to find out the bakery is based in J.P., where I lived for five years and somehow never discovered it. I tried several desserts, loved them all, but couldn't get enough of the Chocolate Carrot Cake. It was excellent and two good friends' birthdays were fast approaching. I knew I'd pick up that cake for each of them, no matter how out of the way I'd have to go to get it. Order attempt #1: I forgot entirely about the cake until the day before one of the birthday dinners. I called Blue Frog and asked if I could pick one up. I was told that's a special order cake only and they need 48-hours notice. I didn't see that stipulation on the website, and I would have called much sooner had I known, since the dinner was long planned. My bad. I did, however, clearly get the sense whoever answered heard that question before and may have been slightly annoyed. I may have been overanalyzing his tone, so I didn't think much of it at that point. Order attempt #2: Turns out we planned a second birthday dinner for the same person a couple days later. I made absolutely sure to place the order just after 5:00 since I'd need the cake by 6:00 two days later (they're open till 7:00). This time, I was told the owner just left and they couldn't take the order. But I said it was 48-hours notice... Two-days notice... etc. Seems the owner would have to pick up the items to make that specific cake on his way out that evening. If she took my order, she said she would get in trouble. Why aren't the ingredients to make that particular cake on hand? If they're going to promote this cake as one of their top items at Taste of the Nation, I should be able actually order it, no? I decided I was just never going to have that cake again, and none of my friends would ever have it, so it was time to stop trying to order it and stop talking them up to people. Then I broke my rule. Order attempt #3: I have another birthday dinner coming up this week. Both the girls who I thought would enjoy this cake will be there. It's only four of us. We're eating right around the corner from Blue Frog. I would settle for a cupcake-sized cake at this point. I called again -- more than three days notice this time. Guess what? They're not taking any orders because they're closed this whole week. Ha! What timing. The cake is good -- I would not be going through all this trouble to try to get it otherwise -- but how can I be a customer if they don't make it available? Maybe have a few on hand? Maybe note somewhere on the website that they need 48 hours to make it? Or maybe just commit to that 48-hour rule? Note to the wise: Order WEEKS in advance. read more

My homegirl lives near here so I guess I am lucky she does (cuz I don't) and I'm lucky she likes me enough to bring their baked goods when I beg and plead. Hands down awesome croissants, muffins, congo bars, whatever - the butter just oozes out of the baked goods. I just ate a scone from here that I had in my fridge for about three days - microwaved that bad boy and voila! Tasted fresh from their bakery! That's a testament to their talents (or my microwaving capabilities, you be the judge). Not to mention, the first time I came here was near closing time and they were just about to dump that day's baked goods - we got them for FREE!! This is the Poor Man's version of Canto 6. Its only advantage over Canto is a more convenient location. Taken as a whole, the baked goods, deserts and coffee are ever-so-slightly better-than-average. But it's very easy to be disappointed. None of the fare counts as "amazing." If quality is what you're after, you must go to Canto. read more

We had a variety of different options on Saturday morning and I liked all of the ones I tried. The plain croissant was the best of the bunch. I got the dark chocolate chip cookies, a blueberry muffin, and an almond croissant. I liked how: -the cookie was really big, had a bit of salt for complexity, and texture was pleasant but it's sweeter than I had wanted. -The blueberry muffin was good; standard, tasty muffin. -The croissant was buttery, but not flaky, but it tasted yummy nonetheless. Almond croissant has a marzipan filling which tastes weird to some people but if you like it the croissant was quite pleasing in taste than texture. read more

Love the Blue Frog! This bakery reminds me of the little French bakeries I frequented when I lived just outside Paris. While it doesn't have the delicate appearance of a French bakery, the pastries are on par with the best I've had. I've frequented this bakery many times - mainly because it's a 10 minute walk from my house - and I love it. I've ordered mini tarts for parties, the almond croissants are heavenly, and I'm ordering my birthday cake from them as well. The staff are very friendly, patient, and humorous. Great place in a wonderful and diverse neighborhood. I love living in JP. read more

My 2+hour carbo tour of JP bakeries versus a hefty loaf of cinnamon almond bread and a peanut butter brownie Who wins? my dentist when he collects my money to pay for the bill to fill the cavities caused by all the sugar rotting my teeth from these sweet goodies... cinnamon almond bread = B, half the loaf was almonds which made it kind of dry, however, the dusting of cinnamon sugar was nice and it was perfect for french toast. peanut butter brownie = B, sugar OVERLOAD! this thing was so sweet that I had to stop to get a cup of water to rinse out my mouth, the sweetness trumped the peanut butter taste and kind of lessened the feel good feeling of eating a brownie... Woohoo --Bae says the coffee is good (I dont drink coffee, myself) --great muffins / cookies / custard tarts --chocolate croissants are tasty and buttery. Though I will say their croissants are more bread-y than crispy/flaky, so just know that going in. --they often give pooches a biscuit! My dog friend Jake always makes a bee-line for Blue Frog when we pass by. One potential downside is there isn't seating (except a window bench to sit/wait if there were a line). So if you're wanting to sit and have a cup of coffee and chat with a friend over pastries, this isn't the best spot for you! Also, $5 credit card minimum! read more

This has become my favorite bagel Dive in JP. Cousin to the La Rena Rosa (the artisan pizza shop down the street) this bakery offers you a wonderful assortment of fresh baked delights. For me, it's all about the bagels. And let me say that I've tried other places on Centre St: JP Licks, City Feed, etc and when it comes to the bagels nothing comes close. Stopped in today with my SO after it being one of the only available options for pastries in the area (due to COVID). The barren options were in the display case, we ended up ordering a blueberry muffin and a cranberry frangipane cake -- side note, like other reviewers have mentioned; I did initially refer to it as a muffin. They did correct me immediately; none of the items were labeled-this would help tremendously. After my man and I left, he mentioned he didn't like the vibe that the clerk gave off. It's funny because I had been thinking that, but we were so excited about trying the place I didn't want to nitpick after he had just bought us two pastries for $8. The price was a little surprising but if it's worth it we don't mind for a local business. Unfortunately, we did not enjoy the pastries off rip. Everything was off, they tasted stale and extremely hard. Right when I decided that I was done eating, I noticed a black hair baked into the frangipane cake. As someone who works in the restaurant industry, I understand these things happen. But based off of our brief interaction there today and a significant number of reviews agreeing that their customer service blows, I'm not going to bother bringing it to their attention because the baked goods were nothing to return for anyway. read more

A. The staff, seriously, you work at a bakery, which means sometimes you have to work at 5am. How can you be so awesome? B. On Valentine's Day they had broken cookies that they frosted and wrote "You broke my heart" on. Way to conserve. C. They serve Raos coffee (Otherside Cafe does too!) and it has this weird hint of cinnamon that makes it like, perfect. D. The croissants - like butter and happiness with a french accent. E. THE SCONES. It's like being in England and it's right off cen'tre' street. F. My girl crush works here and has a tattoo of NH on her arm. I want to be just like her. G. It's a little more run down looking than the other fancy places and I feel like I can go in and grab a weird flavored scone and a cup of coffee and be out of there in 4 bucks. read more

The Blue frog! I remember a few years ago being at my SO aunts house. She lives near by the location where Blue Frog was opening in JP. The big shtick was that the pastry chef of Sonsie and the Garden of Eden opened his own little joint. I think Sonsie and GOE are overrated, yet I was still intrigued to see what this places was all about. Plus I like bad for you food. Simple combo that = a visit I sampled over a few visits: the orange and vanilla custard excellent.....perfect combo and was firm even though no eggs were used Th perfect cupcake with dark chocolate ganache.......if there was ever cupcake that was so good to stand on its own instead of being part of cake, this would be it....The frosting was perfect, not gritty and smooth and buttery while still tasting like chocolate. The cake was moist and fluffy........sigh.......i love cupcakes Raspberry Squares, which were my favorite........shortbread with raspberry, brown sugar and oatmeal topping. Heavenly........the aroma alone from these was a gourmand lovers dream We also stopped by here once to get coffee's and bagels enroute to SO's Aunts. They were wonderful....... Everything was fresh, not too pretentious with quality ingredients. Nothing tasted as if it was sitting in the case for too long......it really hit the spot with out being too much. I feel that sometimes when people try to stand out they put too much effort into creating something new instead of re-creating a classic. Definitely not worth the trip all the way to JP, but if you are in the neighborhood, definitely make it a point to stop in. I just love this place...a little too much. I'm trying to loose a few more pounds, and the scones at Blue Frog aren't helping me any. The goods there are just so fresh and delish, without trying to be over the top or uber creative. I don't need uber fancy baked goods...just a fantastic cookie or a great scone and coffee. I stopped in Blue Frog Bakery around 11am on a weekday, excited for an ice coffee and potentially a delicious pastry. I was in a bit of a rush, and I could already feel my caffeine headache coming on. I walk into the tiny storefront, and after several moments am greeted by a young woman. I order an ice coffee. The clerk tells me, "oh, only have a little ice left, but the coffee is cold." So I'm somewhat disappointed because a cup chock full of ice is one of the pleasures of ice coffee, but I say it's fine. She puts 3 tiny ice cubes in a 16oz cup and fills the rest with the last bit from a jug of ice coffee. I take my drink and add a bit of milk, and look around for a straw. When I ask she says "oh, we're out of straws. There's a sign." She point to a TINY sign hidden behind a bunch of clutter. So I awkwardly say "...oh...okay" then she charges me a price that escapes me now, but seems absurdly expensive for an ice coffee...without ice...and without a straw. I realize this is a picky review, but some small differences, or at least an acknowledgement of my lacking beverage (in words or price reduction) would have been much appreciated and likely would have resulted in a return. It wasn't that it didn't seem interesting but I was busy busy busy and I didn't think I had time to enjoy the sweetness in life. But I decided to try it instead of the behemoth JP Licks for coffee in the morning - especially since they have REAL pastries and sweets. I forget what exactly we got at Blue Frog though. The pastry it self wasn''t really that memorable, but the coffee was good. I came in to try the cupcakes. I didn't see any when I arrived then asked the guy and he said there was one left! Then he took a chocolate/vanilla frosting one out of the back of the case. I was thrilled I could get to try one. The cupcake was very dense. It could of passed for a chocolate pound cake. The flavoring was not sweet either. In this case it definitely lacked some necessary sugar. The frosting was greasy and whipped way too high. I had to remove a bunch of it to take a bite. However, the chocolate chip cookie I got was great. It was on the flatter side but didn't have to be chunky to be tasty. It was warm when I bit into it. The bakery is very small. It was a lot smaller than I expected--A small display case in the front, a cash register, and a few shelves of bread. They have a drink menu, but I can't say anything about that. Bread looked pretty good on the shelf. Their selection was pretty small (or maybe I went too late? I got there at around 1:00...) but it had what I was looking for. I bought a french white boule and dug into it immediately. Dough was a little underdevelopped--very dense, almost... bagel-like? I'm a fan of bagels, but this was a little too much... especially when it was cold so I decided to save it for when I could stick it into the oven. Unfortunately, flavor was a bit lacking as well so even after I warmed it up, i had a hard time eating it without soaking it in olive oil. It wasn't bad, but it really wasn't worth the trip out of Boston especially when I have Bricco's and Clear Flour so close. read more

The Blue Frog Bakery is the only reason that I'm still alive today because it is mandatory for me to consume their chocolate chip croissant almond bread pudding. It's in a shape of a muffin and there is actually no bread in it...it's all croissant, but who cares?! When I first tried these heavenly creations, I was in shock from how amazing it was. I was motionless for a while. They usually make them on the weekends, so you must get there early. Fortunate for me, I live 30 seconds away. On the rare occasion that I don't eat them, I buy their danishes, cookies, bread, cakes, and scones. Everything is excellent. I even take pastries to my sister, who lives in California. Booo Blue Frog! So disappointing. We got a smorgasborad of things. 2 eclairs, 2 flourless chocolate cakes, 1 croissant, 1 brioche. The croissant was decent but for only being a few hours old it already started to taste stale. The brioche was boring. I didn't care for the chunks of sugar on top. It took away form the brioche which was just boring and meh. The eclairs were gross! The inside wasn't custard it was like some weird gel consistency. We literally took one bite of them and put them in the trash. The only saving grace was the flourless chocolate cake. It was good but the outside had this weird cardboardy texture. The inside was delicious. So overall I think I'll pass on this bake shop again. read more

Absolutely disgusting customer service, the lady that worked at the counter today was so rude. I asked for a latte and she said they only had skim and almond milk; so i said skim milk. Then she proceeded to pour 1% milk into the latte, so i innocently asked her "Oh I thought you said you only had skim milk?". She then argued with me and said that it was skim and then threw out the latte, and said I'm giving you a refund; when that's not what i wanted. I told her it wasn't a big deal that it wasn't skim milk, i thought she just misheard me when i said skim. She just had a terrible attitude the whole time. I really enjoy stopping into this little family run bakery while walking my dog. Their croissants are delicious! I've always had really friendly service - the older Yelp reviews reporting rude service puzzle me. Brad and his wife Ginger are always helpful and they seem to work really hard running their small business and baking delicious looking treats and breads. The smell from this place has been torturing me on my morning runs for years. I actually considered changing my route to get to JP pond once because there is nothing less motivating to running at 7am then passing by a place that smells like all the things you've ever tasted that just make you want to lay down. Anyway, I finally stopped in one day on my way back from yoga and now I make an occasional habit of it (again, not helping my workouts matter). Here's my verdict, the blueberry and donut muffins - good, not the best, but good. The raisin scones - pretty good. The service and fact that it's local and tiny - lovely. And then one day I discovered the maple oat butterscotch scone - WHAT DELICIOUS WITCHCRAFT IS THIS?!?! Amazing. I got the almond croissant as per recommendation, and it was excellent, the perfect treat to start the morning with (and quite well-priced, especially for the quality)! I work in another boston-area bakery so I thought I was over and done with croissants -- not so! I'll be back to try the rest of their selection.
