KC is my German shepherd that I rescued when he was 3. He was not properly socialized when he was a puppy and is fearful of people. Our dog, Fergus, loves his time at Blue Barn Ranch. He has boarded with them, done a 3 week train and board situation, and goes to day care. Every single interaction has been top notch. Fergus greets Kathi and everyone else that works there with his toothy-grin, which he reserves for his most favorite people, so we know he is happy there. The training package was amazing and we were so grateful for the guidance that we all received. I can't say enough good things about Blue Barn and the staff! We finally have a place to take our fur babies where we know they'll be happy, safe and perfectly taken care of. We do both daycare (1x per week for socializing) and boarding when we leave town. When we pull onto the property both of our dogs get so excited, they can barely contain themselves. The ranch is clean and well maintained. Kathi sends regular videos of supervised playtime and it's so nice to see our dogs having an absolute blast. She makes sure that each dog is paired with appropriate play mates and it's been so great for their social skills and exercise. Additionally, we have done the Blue Barn obedience training with our six month old Cane Corso and we all learned so much. Can't wait to enroll our other dog in the fall. We have been taking our very rambunctious Shepard/Lab mix Rocky to Kathi for dog training and LOVE the results! Rocky was adopted as a puppy during Covid and is suffering from lack of socialization. Kathi and her family are amazing. If you're looking for your fur babies to have a home away from home, please bring them to Blue Barn Ranch. My boyfriend and I came to Joshua Tree on vacation to celebrate our 5th anniversary. We have 2 pit mixes, and were staying in a very cozy camper. While very romantic, it's not the most comfortable stay with two large active dogs. Nezuko, our younger dog (almost a year), is very hyperactive and suffers from extreme separation anxiety. We've only had her for two months, but she whines and barks if we are out of view. Not ideal for a relaxing vacation. Our other dog, Deku, is just over two, but is recovering from CCL surgery- meaning he can't run, jump, or play. With both having different needs, I decided to board Nezuko nearby so that she could have a fun vacation as well. The first place I contacted heard about my needy and hyper pup, and suggested we bring her to Blue Barn Ranch. Kathi answered her phone after two rings and listened to my situation. She was able to explain why my dog acts the way she does (returned to the shelter twice in less than a year & her breed) They have no breed restrictions, and she's an amazing trainer. I was able to bring Nezuko in THAT SAME DAY- which meant I wouldn't have to worry about her not getting enough play on our trip. The pricing for her 3 night stay was a bargain! She offered me a "referral" discount from the other facility, and an adoption discount, too. She even texted me the next morning with videos of Nezuko playing with her daughter-in-law's dog! Thanks to the relaxation and less stress from the puppy, our recovering dog had our full attention! My now fiancé was even able to propose that same evening! I asked Kathi if there was a day camp option for Deku so we could enjoy hiking in Joshua Tree national park. Kathi and Rachel (daughter-in-law) were amazing for caring for him for the day, and made sure to update us in the sweetest ways! My rescue dog Hilde, who was 7 when she rescued me, did not know realize she not a human with fur. She was too reactive to her canine cousins to take to a dog park, and too old to completely recover, but Kathi has taught me to accept her limitations and emphasize her strengths. My friend and I moved our three horses here after boarding at a self-care facility. With our work schedules, it's been a great relief to be able to focus on working with the horses. Board rates offer a lot of bang for the buck- three hay feedings and two stall cleanings daily are included in the price. Facilities are very clean. One of my horses is very sensitive to flies and it hasn't been an issue for him there at all. Amenities are great. Large arena with good footing, hot walker, two round pens and several tack rooms. There's even a dedicated equestrian trail surrounding the property that's closed to vehicle traffic, plus other trails readily available in the same area. Added bonus: there's a little corner store nearby so you can grab a snack and cold drink after your ride. It's a quiet, family-friendly environment. I appreciate that my eight-year-old daughter can work with her pony in a safe and welcoming setting. Most importantly, the horses are well cared for and seem very content there. After completing a 5-session course with my reactive dog,  I have seen significant and steady improvement in my dog's behavior. I initially wasn't going to write a review about Blue Barn but feel the need to now since my name has been brought up by Kathi. Before bringing my Arabian colt to Blue Barn my friend and I came to check out the facilities and talk to Kathi about bringing our two horses there. We showed up with our kids in tow and wanted to make sure that they would be welcome at the ranch with us. We are both military wives and don't have the option of leaving the kids at home when our husbands are gone. Kathi welcomed us and said she had kids of her own but they were since grown and she didn't mind the kids. After leaving the ranch that day I called Kathi and had a long conversation about my horse. We seemed to agree on everything that I had mentioned to her at the time and I thought it would be a great fit. Blue Barn has a lot of rules and whenever I had a question I would ask John. He always seemed to be out there and Kathi was mostly working with the dogs. I asked a lot of question to make sure we weren't breaking any rules or if there was a preferred way for them. It seemed to annoy John but I just wanted to make sure so there wasn't any issues since they ran such a tight ship. During our time at Blue Barn, I was asked to move my horse three times. He started off in the barn and I was asked to move him because he was "cribbing" and messing with the automatic waterer. My horse does not and did not crib. I had my horse tied to one of their metal hitching posts and he managed to get loose. I was not that far away from him as I was getting something to work with him on. We caught him within 2 or 3 minutes. So quickly in fact that Kathi and John didn't know it happened until they came out to do the nightly feedings and saw his prints. Horses get loose.. it happens. I received a text from Kathi saying "We are going to have to eliminate you leaving him tied on hitching rails." I apologized for it happening but how can you not have a horse tied.. He needs to learn to stand for when it comes time to put his tack on, bathing, mounting, grooming, and when the farrier or vet comes out. I thought that was absurd. The reason for us leaving Blue barn was because I did not feel welcome there. I was talked down to on numerous occasions by John. He raised his voiced at my child for something that wasn't his fault and didn't bother to apologize once he knew who it was. The breaking point for me though was when John came up to me and started complaining about my horse pawing at the metal siding when he was filling up his water. He was verbally aggressive towards me and said "I don't like nor do I have the time for youngsters at my ranch.". He then yelled at me like a child over a trash can lid being blown off and insinuated that I was too stupid to know how to push it down properly. Even though he wasn't welcome there, my horse was taken care of under Kathi's care. John specifically needs to work on his people/customer service skills since they own a business and he is mostly around the horse boarders. read more

I moved out to Joshua Tree with my dog Jake nearly three years ago, back then he was very skittish and practically afraid of his own shadow. With help from Kathi and John, I can now say he's a completely different dog. Jake has been through an obedience training course, and had a day care routine while I was away at my job. We looked into many training options in the Coachella Valley (we live in DHS and work in Palm Desert), but decided to try Blue Barn Ranch (BBR) in Yucca Valley since they both train and provide day care--we liked the idea that Fin could have a familiar environment that would provide both structure and fun. For about a year and a half now, we've made use of many of the services BBR offers and we've been very pleased with all: two group obedience 5-class sessions, five private hour-long training sessions, one group beginning rally 5-class sessions, rattlesnake aversion training, day care once a week, multiple 3-night boards, and many 15-minute swimming sessions. Wow! We're not super well-to-do people, but BBR offers such a great service for a price we can come up with. We are happy we are able to expand Fin's horizon's, skills, and circle of friends. Kathi, the trainer, is always so generous with her time and knowledge. She is straight-forward, non-judgmental, but holds a high standard--it all goes toward getting the best out of our Fin. BBR also has a very active Facebook page where videos and photos of the dogs that spend time (training or playing) there are often posted. It's a great joy to see Fin tumbling in a pile and racing with friends. It is also educational to be able to see how dogs play nicely--since I'm not very literate in dog body language. The property is also VERY well maintained. Just from that, you can tell that the proprietors take a lot of pride in what they do. We have boarded our dogs here. It's a great space for many types of animals. We feel peace of mind having our dogs here. But I really want to recommend their dog training classes. My husband took one of our three dogs to personal training and the transformation was amazing! Our aloof, individualistic dog became more engaged and responsive. Then we took two of our three dogs to group training. There were dogs of varying sizes, breeds and ages; and all of them were transformed. We adopted our 1 year old pup Baggy from a hoarding situation where he spend most of his time in a kennel. He had 3 modes: sweet, fearful and WILD. We did basic obedience training and started to see a difference after just one class. And by the 5th class, we were amazed at how far he had come. He's more confident, he listens to us more, and he's really becoming such a good little dog! Kathy was able to work with all of his issues, and was so patient with him (and us!) We've been seeing Kathi for private training for our very fearful pit mix puppy. Our little girl has major anxiety issues and seems to be afraid of everything. With Kathi's training and support, Cosette is coming out of her shell, gaining self confidence and trust. Kathi has taught us that a collar and leash are a way of communicating with your dog as to what you want them to do and which way to go. I would like to provide you with some information that you possibly were not aware of at the time that you posted your negative review. Zoey's intake feeding instructions note her as a "hard keeper" that required supplements. Nicole reduced the amount of supplement that I was to feed by half after receiving her first feed invoice. Zoey was blanketed, often in multiple layers in temps well above 70 degrees on numerous occasions. Both of these things can contribute to weight loss. The method of measuring and estimating a horse's weight and then using a percentage of that measurement to determine the amount of forage a horse needs per day is science based and is the preferred method of our local veterinarian. I will put these facts up in the public comments if the review remains on Yelp. Nicole asked if Zoey could remain at Blue Barn Ranch after she gave notice. That indicates that she did not feel uncomfortable with Zoey's care. Several of the residents of Blue Barn Ranch were upset by your review. I have asked them to please allow me to direct message you prior to them responding to your assumptions of them and their horses on Yelp. The complaints against Penny and Nicole will include self-entitled behavior and disrespectful use of the facility. There will be criticism of training methods. A huge concern and one that everyone mentioned in great detail was that the children were not supervised. This lead to inappropriate play, excessive noise, scaring animals and dangerous situations such as being on the driveway and in the parking area unattended. I hope that you will agree that removing the review is in everyone's best interest. Zoey is indeed a "difficult keeper" but at every other facility we have been at it has not been an issue once we asked that her ration of hay be adjusted. Your method clearly may work for horses that mostly sit in their stalls and do not work. The science is not perfect based on the way you do it. Horses have metabolisms and different levels of activity like people, so therefore their rations often need to be adjusted depending on many other factors other than measuring and estimating a horse's weight and then using a percentage of that measurement to determine the amount forage your feed. The first month she was at your facility we PROVIDED hay for almost the whole month. Then Nicole received a bill that you fed her 2 bags of beet pulp in one month in a filthy dirty feeder that we ended throwing away as you had sole possession of it and never bothered to rinse it out! Then you broke the pump for the oil and NEVER even informed us. Yes, Nicole did request that her beet pulp be reduced as it appeared she was being gouged with the cost and it was ridiculous to go through 2 bags of beet pulp in a month, clearly that was a substitute for the measly amount of hay she was getting. As far as blanketing goes, Zoey is a show horse and has always been under lights which is something your facility did not offer as there is NO electricity to the barn stalls at all which in itself is a safety issue. Therefore she needed to be blanketed and was never overheated. If you felt that she was somehow endangered by being blanketed you certainly never mentioned it or offered to remove the blanket. Perhaps a few of your 4 or 5 boarders get their horses out, but quite frankly you have one that weaves so badly that it has dug a hole in front of its stall. Clearly this horse is not getting the stimulation it needs. With regard to your comments about Penny and Nicole's children you were told specifically that they had kids. Your comment was "oh no problem we had kids we know that they can cry, laugh, holler, etc. as long as they are supervised, we are fine with them." I guess you can have kids out there as long as you put a muzzle on them? In addition, Nicole was asked one time for her to make sure the kids do not yell or laugh loud because you have a neighbor who complained because that neighbor has an anxiety condition. I have been with out there with both Nicole and Penny and so has my husband and both parents supervise the kids, one rides or works a horse while the other adult watches the kids. Also your husband complained about the "young horse" as you clearly aware before they moved the yearling there and it "was not a problem, until it became a problem" Penny was attacked by your husband and Nicole defended her, by pointing that out. Self-entitled behavior, perhaps you can be more specific? Go ahead with your critique of "training methods." I am sure I will find that amusing. Went out of town to visit children and grandchildren for Christmas. My hubby took Ika to see Kathi and her staff and other dogs. Buck said she jumped out of our Jeep, and not just wagged her tail, but wagged her whole rear end, she was so excited to see them. It was such a wonderful Christmas. Knowing Ika was happy at Blue Barn, while we were gone, just added to it. You can't go wrong here, but because they are wonderful, make sure you make reservations in advance. I feel I need to make a review on here because my name has been put out there in the reviews. Also in response to Kathis message to my mother. There are multiple reasons for leaving Blue Barn ranch. The main reason was JOHN. He is very aggressive to younger women. John was VERY aggressive with my friend. Over moving her yearling to a different stall. I believe they should make an age limit of 40 and up. I also believe they need to review horse training techniques as they obviously don't know the current ones being used. I show my horse and have competed at breed shows and open shows and nationals since I was 7 years old. I have been trained by multiple trainers and not one of the training techniques I use has been looked frowned upon. My children are my business you don't want children at your facility then let that be known before we move our horses in. We were told children were allowed at the facility. We never disrespectfully used their facilities!!! My bill for for one month was 440 dollars supposedly due to the fact of three 50lb bags of beat pulp, board, and the 30 dollar charge for supplementing. That is why I reduced the supplements. My horse normally goes threw one 50lb bag a month. I don't believe they were feeding her the correct amount. At all other facilities I have been to they feed by weighing the hay. I believe that is the more appropriate way to feed horses that are getting OUT of their pens and being worked. The majority of the facility owners horses stay in their stalls and are not let out. I had been there for four months and had never seen the horses out of their pens. Most of them weave,crib,or dig holes as a sign of boredom. Yes I did inquire to stay after I put in my 30 day notice because my horse would be closer to me. I am very happy I decided not to keep her there after all. We are so happy to be back at the facility that we were with for years. This by far has been the WORST facility and owners I have dealt with! I would NOT board here if you actually work/ride and make use of the facility have children or a young horse because you will be watched like a hawk. read more

Kathi was great to work with! We have a 7 month old puppy and we had 3 sessions at Blue Barn Ranch. Kathi was very helpful and very patient with my husband and I when we asked a ton of questions! My big husky/shepherd mix, Nep, has been doing daycare, boarding and training with Kathi @ Blue Barn for over a year now. We came after my pup lost his best friend and he was very untrained. He immediately felt comfortable at Blue Barn. After several months of daycare and boarding we decided to do the 1 on 1 training, then we did a group training course and the Canine Good Citizen class. It was night and day with my pup. Our bond got stronger, I became more confident as a pet parent and I found out that he likes rules, structure and training. I recommend Blue Barn Ranch to anyone looking for short term/long term boarding, daycare or a long term investment in their pup. read more

This place is amazing!! When we plan in advance or go on last minute trips, there is always availability. Kathi has taught us things to help our dogs and is always very friendly and helpful. They have a very knowledgeable staff and treat our girls as they were their own. It is very nice to go on vacation and not have to worry about whether the dogs are safe or not. If I could rate this place higher than 5, I would.  I recently adopted a 13 year old surrendered Maltipoo cross.  He was terrified to find himself at a shelter.  While he never tried to bite me and is very sweet, he was very aggressive toward other dogs and people.  I recently had to travel for a week and couldn't take him with me.  He would act like he would bite if anyone even tried to reach out to pet him.  The only person I trusted to board him with was Kathi.  Even saying that, I worried about him the entire time I was gone since he was so aggressive with other people.  I had nothing to worry about.  I came back to a happy dog who seemed to really like Kathi even though he smothered me with doggy kisses.  Kathi worked with his fear aggression and he learned it's fun to play with another dog.  He also needed to lose weight.  Because she was someone different than myself, she cut back on his food and he seemed satisfied.  With my new understanding of how I may have reinforced his fears by being apprehensive encountering other dogs and people on walks, we are working on his fears and his weight! read more
