What a great new space in Akron. Has that cool blues/jazz feel like old New Orleans. Went there opening weekend and you would have thought it had been around for years. We were a group of 13 that walk in on Saturday night last minute. We are grateful for that but that was the only positive compliment I can say. Service was extremely slow and at times non existent. One in our part did not receive her meal for 45 mins after the other 12 finished. Manager said the OWNER would be over to adjust our bill. That NEVER happened. When I confronted her she said they took off all of our drinks. Not true. We all paid for drinks.Never again. read more

I am not a Jazz person however I deceided to treat my self to a nice dinner and a Jazz night with my teenagers and my friends . I was very impressed. The place is very well kept and the stage and the seating arrangements are perfect. The wine and food selections with a southern twist were amazing. Valet parking was perfect . My husband and I went to Blu for the first time and will definitely be back! The vibe is super cool and the music was amazing! Blu has a great drink menu with a large variety of beer, swanky cocktails, wine, and bubbly. Our server was extremely friendly and was always on top of refilling our drinks. The owner even stopped by and asked if we were enjoying ourselves, which we thought was pretty neat. This is a great venue and perfect for a date night or even a night out with friends! read more

I thought it would be fun to take my wife to a piano bar since we were just in town for the night. We made a reservation and were quickly seated. That's about the only "plus" to the evening. We waited longer than usual to be served. I felt we were both maybe underdressed for the location. We had been traveling all day and, yeah, we had jeans and tshirts on but the yelp review said the attire was casual. Nope! You better dress up for this place because they'll make sure they treat you accordingly. Our server admittingly said they saw us be seated but thought we were groupies for a band playing nearby. The service just went downhill from there. Our server was polite and all, just not attentive. We had to flag the server down after several minutes to order our wine and i had to get their attention again to order our appetizers. Like i said, nice server, just seemed distracted. The food was good though. I wasn't too excited to have the appetizers and the main course arrive at the same time, but i guess its better than having to wait around for food. The manager made the rounds to the tables but skipped us without so much as a nod. As i said, the food was good and the chef knows how to cook, but the atmosphere seemed "snooty" so just be prepared. read more

What a great place! This kind of entertainment has just been waiting for a place to happen in Akron, and this one is perfect. I've been there twice and can't wait to go back. Great music, good food, reasonable prices, and a nice mix of people in the audience. Clientele ranged from early 30s on up both nights I went. I liked the ethnic diversity in the audience, too. Everyone was cool, and they were there for the music. If someone had told me we were in a jazz club in NYC or Chicago, I'd have believed it. This is one of the coolest things that's happened in Akron in a long time. If you like good jazz, give it a try. I have been coming to The Blu Jazz for years to watch my son play in his schools jazz band. EVERY single time the waiting on dinner and drinks is horrible. Tonight proved once again nothing has changed! Sad to say tonight was the absolute worst. My husband ordered a cheeseburger and I ordered a salad with shrimp. Took over 2 hours just for this. I don't blame the waiter, he looked like he was going to have a breakdown! I do however blame the owner! Every single time they apologize and say they were not expecting this big of a crowd. Guess what, been here like I said many times for these events and every time it is an awesome turn out, at no surprise parents want to come out and support their kids. Let me give you a tip, hire more workers and schedule waiters and waitresses when there is an event! We will never plan on dinner here again, will always eat before we go. We will only go to support our son no way would go here other then for our son. We also wanted to talk to the manager when we received the bill and no one could locate him... interesting! Gave the bill to the waiter and told him there is no way were paying anything. Of coarse he apologized and gave excuses again and said he would take care of the bill. First time visit for anniversary dinner. Not impressed. Drink was not mixed well (tasted just the alcohol, not the mix of flavors) and poor presentation (one unidentified tiny leaf stuck to the inside of the glass at the rim). My salad was o.k....seafood & pasta o.k....sauce was too sweet. Husband could barely cut the brussel sprouts. (Are brussel sprouts supposed to be tough?) His salmon was not great and had a super sweet sauce on it (hmmm...same sauce as mine?) Not a good food experience. Ambiance is great though! read more

BLU could raise the bar for Jazz music in Akron, but hasn't yet. If you're interested in a Bar with music in the background, then BLU is a good place for a few drinks. If you're interested in a NYC style Jazz club where music is the real focus and have a drink too, then you still need to go to New York. Unfortunately, Akron lacks the attitude and maturity for live Jazz music. However, maybe BLU will eventually get it and start shows with a few reminders -- turn off electronics and keep conversations down to respect the musicians, and audience who paid to hear them. read more

Came here with a few friends last night after a wine tasting at Uncorked. We all had drinks and food, and everyone was super impressed. I had a slow gin fizz, and split the creole pizza with my boyfriend. The gin fizz was spot on, and the pizza. Holy. Cow. The pizza was amazing. Great room, decor and food. BUT this is supposed to be for Jazz. Not once while introducing the artists, did the owner or manager remind guests to not talk. The noise was unbearable. The musician had to ask the guests to please quiet down. How embarrassing for the management. I am very disappointed. This is NOT a jazz club. read more

I bought tickets for our party of 3 ($66.00) ahead of time for the 3 DIVAS Jazz Trio show for Saturday night. I had never been there before and thought we'd enjoy three talented females/musicians in a jazz trio. We planned to use the valet parking since we were not familiar with the area or the parking. The fellow running the parking lot said they don't do valet parking for the BLU club, but that I could pay him $7.00 and park my SUV myself. So, that's what I did. The woman who greeted us at the front counter (once we made it down a few flights of stairs to find the entrance of the club) was very friendly and helpful. The joint was empty when we got there, and never really filled up completely -- there were lots of empty seats in the back. (I think it was a bit overpriced at $22.00 per ticket, so maybe that's why). When we entered the club area, we initially chose a table near the front/bar and ordered some appetizers off of their menu. The waiter told us they were all out of the pretzels with queso, so we ordered a couple of other things. The other two people in our party wanted cocktails, but weren't sure what to order. They had a taste for daiquiris, but the bar didn't have the ingredients to make them - so they each ordered a different cocktail off the menu. When the trio came out to do their sound check, we decided to move back a little; however, my chair was near the side wall and it was freezing back there! Several other patrons got up and moved their seats (or put their coats back on), too, because it was so cold in there. When the waiter brought us water (apparently everyone gets water when they sit down), I was so shocked and disappointed to have it delivered in plastic cups! I just felt/figured this swank Jazz club was going to have way-cool glassware to go with the ambiance. When we got our appetizers, we were given tiny little black paper plates! Having signature glass dishes (maybe with their logo on them) would have been cool, but I suppose they were trying to save money and labor costs! The food was aesthetically-appealing and presented beautifully, however, so that was awesome! When the trio started, I immediately was blown away and impressed with the keyboardist, Jackie Warren. OH. MY. GOSH. She is fabulous! She really stole the show with her piano playing! I think she lives in Cleveland, so you might be able to see her around town sitting in with other bands/groups. The bass player was pretty phenomenal, too, especially when she used the bow during their beautiful rendition of Denver's tune "Sunshine on my Shoulders"! The most important aspect of the evening at the BLU club was the music - and that was fantastic. The other elements (plastic cups, cheap paper plates, cold air, out of food) were secondary. Overall, the club was pretty cool and everyone was friendly; the girls' bathroom was huge and pristine, and the jazz was spot on. One of the members in our party was in her late 70s and she enjoyed it very much...but not as much as the second club we hit that night when the trio went on break - Jillys - to boogie (for free) to America's best kept secret...15-60-75: The Numbers Band! read more

Went for dinner and a show on 12/7/18. Arrived at 5:45 and were greeted promptly and seated. The menu (new and pared down according to the manager) looked exciting. Plenty of time to make it downstairs to claim a seat when the doors opened at 7...or so we thought. It went downhill from there. No designated server to take care of us or anyone else from my observation of waitstaff walking the whole floor and no one checking on any customers to see how people were doing. The promised bread basket took more than 20 minutes to arrive. And that was after we asked for it twice. The herbed butter was frozen and the bread was average at best. At 7:20 and after waiting more than 30 minutes for our entrees and 20 minutes for a second cocktail (a vodka martini...not exactly difficult), I went to the bar. It was chaos. Empty glasses everywhere. 3 people behind the bar, manager looking harried, no one keeping track of tickets, and it was obvious that we weren't the only unhappy customers. I complained about our wait and asked if we could have our entrees and second cocktail delivered to us downstairs. Waitress and manager seemed flustered by the request. I was told the cocktail was on its way and to go back to my table where I would receive my cocktail and bill and then yes, we could go downstairs and our entrees would be brought to us. I sent my date downstairs to reserve a table in the club and I waited at the table. The cocktail was delivered, filled to the rim which was going to make carrying it downstairs a bit tricky, and so was the bill. I was uncomfortable paying the full bill when we hadn't even had our entrees. The only discount offered was the one promised because we had tickets to the concert (15%). No offer by management to "help make it right". The bill was $91 discounted to $83! For an appetizer, salad, 2 cocktails and 2 entrees. Normally I would tip on the full amount but service was so atrocious and I had no idea who our server was, I left a minimal tip. We did get our entrees once we were in the club. None of the food we ordered was above average and made less so by the horrible service. The only reason the evening wasn't a complete disaster was because the jazz was great and one of my favorite artists was performing. But the experience in the restaurant was so disappointing that if I ever decide to go to another performance there, I will dine elsewhere. Most of all I wish I had saved my money rather than feel like I wasted it on what was supposed to be a special night out. read more
