Gem for the neighbourhood! I hope everyone who lives in the area realizes how lucky are having alternatives to huge, chain grocery stores where all the produce is easily twice the price of this place. Is it cramped? Yes. You can't go wrong here. Prices are extremely reasonable, and the selection is plentiful. Summer and fall months are particularly good because they promote and sell Ontario produce. If you are looking for particular vegetable(s) used in Korean food, you may want to go across the street to Pats. However, this fruit (and vegetable) market is really solid. Have been going there for years. Cold in the winter - seriously, you'll need your gloves inside. I figured it was time for an update. I'm still a fan of this place for the following reasons: 1. Selection - a huge range of produce from all over the world - not to mention our often overlooked but much loved Ontario grown products. Currently have seasonal foods like persimmons, chestnuts, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries (okay, maybe not so seasonal). 2. Price - it's hard to beat any of their pricing - I can still find organic berries here (mid November) for the same price OR LESS (!) than in most grocery stores. You really do get your money's worth. Today I came home with some great organic sweet potatoes, asparagus, a bag of fancy mandarin oranges (with the leaves), a big bunch o'bananas, a bunch of tulips, green beans, a bag of avocados ($2.50 a bag - RUN!) and some cool looking (grey) mushrooms - it came to just over $20. I've gotten over my resentment of their hours as it's still a great place to shop. It's still cash only but they now have two cash registers, so lines move faster (I just go when there aren't any). The best fruit market I've been to out of 6 or 7 in the Kensington / Little Italy / Koreatown area in Summer 2009. PROS: - Good / very good prices on generally average to slightly above average produce. - Look in the pic for what I got for $10.39! - Example - Some types of berries for $2.00/pint... note - prices often quoted at for instance 2 for $4.00, but in my experience one is still only $2.00. - They will properly pack your berries CONS - Eh, I think I'm bringing home a few more fruit flies than I'd like. - On the first few visits the apples and pears haven't looked great - Its clean for its peer group, but its no Loblaws. Amazing selection, even better prices. I get almost all my produce from this place. The owners are also very nice and friendly, and their produce is always good quality. Sometimes the more exotic produce they carry is a little random (they always have basic staple vegetables and fruits in stock) but you can get things like coconuts and golden kiwis for a really good price when they have them. Easily the best combination of price, quality, service, and selection in the city. If it grows, buy it here. Seriously, whatever is in season they seem to always have the best version at the lowest price anywhere. Was able to follow the North American blueberry crop cycle this year starting with Florida (meh - but at least they were fresh) on to North Carolina (Organic! 2 pints for $3.00 !!!) then New Jersey (no really, they grow amazing stuff - the blues were superb!) then a jog out to California, back to Maine and then onto Ontario and BC. Even the local wild berries were only $2 a pint! Assuming that not everyone is as blueberry obsessed as I am: Salad greens - Amazing selection - boxed, bags, celloed - they've usually got spring mix, romaine, baby spinach, and arugula. A few weeks ago they were selling boxed organic spring mix for $1.50. Their $1.99 bag-0-greens at the front counter are always fresh and an insanely good value. Mangoes, Peppers, Fresh herbs, Melons - All fresh - All cheap Take a BIG recyclable bag and $10 and you will FILL IT with an incredible variety of the freshest, tastiest fruits and veg that you will NOT find at your unfriendly neighborhood stupormarket. Almost comically cheap (i.e. bell peppers for 1.49/lb, 2 tubs of organic spinach for $3) and generally very high quality produce. Helpful, friendly staff. This neighborhood has no shortage of fresh, local and organic produce. Prices are great, there's high turnover of the produce here. The prices at this fruit stand are much better than Loblaws or Fiesta farms but I like to diversify as I find certain things are superfresh and crisp at those two grocery stores since they keep all produce refrigerated every step of the way. The lady that most frequently works at the counter is a huge Fruit Nazi, she wants you to have your cash ready and she tends to bag your produce instantly if you don't tell her not to when you have your own bags/cart and she tends to ring up the next person while you bag your produce and count your money to keep the line going..she's quick but it comes off as rude, and by rude I mean Nazi. All in all you save money by shopping here, and they have a few organic items here and there which you also save on. read more

PROS: This is where to get some of the greatest prices on fresh produce in downtown Toronto. I'm talking two pints of blueberries for $1 and six limes for another $1. What is great is that the prices are phenomenal AND the produce is FRESH! So many people go through the place that the produce is constantly being re-stocked. Pretty great selection of fruit, including some of the nicest mandarin oranges this last winter. Opens late! 8/9pm-ish. For salad/greens lovers: they sell both salad in plastic boxes and bags. The bags of salad that they put together that you can find at the front counter are really decently sized and around $2. CONS: The space is pretty small. It can get cramped in there. You might find yourself saying "excuse me" a lot, especially if you're like me and often have to go back through the place a few times because you forgot to pick up garlic or lemons. read more

One of the best fruit/veg grocers along Bloor between Bathurst and Christie, for sure. They have a great range of fresh produce - especially what's in season - and you can often get great deals on pints of berries, cartons of peaches, prepackaged fruit/veg, etc. Prices are really reasonable in general, though! They have an excellent range of greens, herbs, and asian veg, too. Nom! On the whole, quality is up there, although occasionally you might have to sift through to find flawless stuff. Had only $20 cash on me (cash only?), and was able to pick up 2 x .5 pints of org. blueberries (for a paltry $2 each); 2 pints of org. raspberries (2 for $7); 1 salad ($3.5); 1 org. kale ($1.99), and one mango for $1.5 Total was $16.49. Guaranteed to cost more elsewhere. Produce was generally fresh. Brands were known (Cal-Organics; Foxy;...). There was a long line-up, but it didn't take too long to get through - 5 min. or so. A great thing about living in the Christie Pits area is the Bloor Fruit Market. Like many sprinkled around the streets of Toronto, this little store is jam packed of fruits and veggies that are fresh, Ontario grown and well priced! If you don't live directly in China Town you may not have access to the hordes of vendors that line the streets there. Instead, it's great that you can walk just a few minutes down the street from the Christie subway station and have a smaller version of this. Caution over your total! I shop here 1 - 3 times a week and find it convenient and the turn over is fast so the fruits, vegetables and flowers are fresh. But, they ring you up so fast you don't know the breakdown, so keep a running total in your head so the check out you already know what the total should be. The last two visits I observed a "slight of hand" tactic where the guy in front of me got charged over $40.00 for purchases that were obviously less then $20.00 in value. He was holding a $20.00 and was stunned, yet he dug out another $20.00 but looked bewildered. A few days later the same thing happened to me, I got run up for $42.00 for a purchase that was about $18.00. I keep a running total in my head and insisted they re do the calculation and sure enough the purchase was under $20.00..... be forewarned! read more

I've never been to or given a fruit store one star, but I'm in a big foodie so I spend a good amount of time shopping for the right produce when I'm there- I went to the cash and after totaling everything they go "cash only, go to bank," and say they'll wait 5 minutes and keep my order as they were just about to close. I ran to the bank a half block away and back in 2 minutes, came back and the lights were off & doors were locked. I found to be so disrespectful and selfish to do, especially when you'd think they'd want to keep customers? They kept jamming into me while I was shopping too, 30 min before closing with their carts to put produce away. Then a lady came and moved me with her arm, not aggressively, but you just don't touch someone to move when you can ask verbally. And she spoke perfect English. They do have good produce, and slightly lower prices than the other couple fruit stores around but I'd rather support a business that shows respect, or is at least neutral. read more

I've been buying all my produce here since I moved into the area about a year ago. I'm consistently impressed by the selection and prices. Made countless stir-fries and soups. I have enjoyed shopping at the Bloor fruit market both because of good selection good prices and good organic prices. My issue however is that for those who would like to observe at the cash what they are purchasing it's next to impossible. The cashiers are so fast which in and of itself is a good thing however my beef is with the accuracy. Most times there's a lineup and it's almost embarrassing to ask them a question so I and I assume most people don't. A while ago I looked at my receipt when I left the store and realized there was an error on my bill and so went back and the woman apologized. Tonight I came home and looked at my receipt (which they don't always give you) and noticed I was charged for nine items I counted and double counted when I in fact only bought eight items. I believe I was also over charged for at least one item. Are they just too fast and make mistakes or are they gouging a little here a l there. I think the answer is either I stop shopping here or ask them to slow down as they are ringing things in . I'd be interested to know if anyone else has noticed the same sort of thing . read more

This is the cheapest and best place to buy produce in the neighbourhood. It's always busy for a good reason. They have a big organic section if that's your thing, but otherwise they have a good selection of most produce to fill up on.
