The Economy Fruit Market has surprisingly passed health inspection tests for many, many decades…read moredespite its stained floor and walls, borderline rotten produce, and lack of refrigeration units. Its outward appearance might have kept Yelp reviewers away, but I'd say it's a hidden gem with its 20th-century prices. Consistently cheaper than the nearby No Frills and Walmart at Dufferin Mall, the Economy Fruit Market is the cheapest grocery store in Toronto. While I recommend going to the Portuguese rival Do Rego grocery store down the street for peaches, items in bulk, and refrigerated, regularly-washed greens; the Economy Fruit Market has unbeatable $1 boxes of grapes, tomatoes, and bananas. Seasonal sales include corn on the cob (six for $1) and cantaloupe (two large melons for $1). I simply pick what I need, eat it right away, and return a couple days later. This facial recognition has probably given me a discount too, as one particular store cashier always rounds down the prices for loyal customers ($1.65 to $1.50, $2.20 to $2.00, etc.; note that it's also cash-only). Overall, the Economy Fruit Market is not for everyone, but for a health-conscious Exercise Sciences student renting from a nearby home like me, it's better than an A-OK rating.

Everyone seems to mix up this place with Kensington fruit market on Kensington and St Andrew. What piqued my interest goes back to one drunken Sunday night on the Victoria Day long weekend when we had a feast at Toronto institution Oyster Boy tucked away in Trinity Bellwoods park. After that we stumbled across the park north towards where the car was on Dundas but wait, the night wasn't over yet, by far, so when we saw some signs of life on Dundas we decided to stop in for a drink on the patio. It was one of very few places even open in the depths of the long weekend. Turns out it was one of Canada's premiere wine bars, Archive. This is where industry people go to talk, well, industry talk I suppose. The server was super chatty with my friend as both are wine nerds and intellectuals it turns out. In convo he started bragging about their food saying "it's local goodness, we get our meat from Sanagan's and our veg from Augusta Fruit Market" so I had to find the place and today I did! I've walked by so many times without noticing it's ridiculous. Out front on the ground were boxed orders of fruit and vegetables each with a scribbled customer's name. These read like a who's who of Toronto's culinary scene! Amazing. I checked out the downstairs cold storage which was an underground maze of boxes and boxes of veg with many staff literally running around like ants moving boxes and prepping orders. Cold, dark, dank with water on the floor in parts like something out of a horror movie and scary like something might jump out at you around one of the corners. Orders move up to the main floor via an antique freight elevator adding to the creepiness complete with rattling chains. Well done Kensington, you've surprised and shocked me yet again with the vibe!

Bloorcourt Village Market is an institution in this tiny West side neighborhood. A few months ago…read morethe bad news came down that the family who runs this market would have to vacate their old store location, which was on the next block over. There was such a huge outpouring of grief that the family pledged to remain in the neighborhood. Their new location took a couple of months to open, but I will never forget hearing the news that the new place had finally taken the brown paper out of the windows and opened it's doors. I won't forget it because it was my birthday and my drunken exuberance was unleashed upon the unprepared stranger who gave me the news at around 1am at Disgraceland. When I eagerly entered the new place I immediately told one of the owners that I'd nearly developed scurvy without them. She laughed and said it was great to have such community support. The new store is smaller, possibly by half, but it is now more of a specialty produce and grocery mart. The old location had a lot of room but their nonperishable aisles didn't seem to move a lot of stock. The new location still features some of their old specialties, including a wide range of latino and asian cooking supplies. The produce is always great, with a focus on organic when available. They also have a few cooler cases with drinks and some perishable goods. If you're in the neighborhood, skip the Dufferin Mall nightmare and head straight to this great little store, the jewel of the neighborhood.

I had recently read about this place in Bloordale on blogto and was curious to try their offerings. Located about a 2-3 min walk from Lansdowne subway station, this small shop currently has a takeout window where their menu is written on boards placed in front of the takeout window. The shop gives off a hidden gem and hole in the wall kind of vibe. The staff greeted me promptly but it took me a few minutes to decide on what smoothie to purchase (so many choices and combinations!). The smoothies are $4 and all banh mis are $5 (all tax is included in the listed prices). There were also various fresh juices for sale with varying price points. I opted for a passionfruit, strawberry and mango smoothie and got 2 pork banh mis. My food was made at a reasonable time and the size of the smoothie and quality of the smoothie definitely was worth more than $4! The smoothie was definitely refreshing on a hot day. The banh mis were made with soft baguette bread, chunks of cut up pork and lots and lots of carrots and cucumbers. I definitely enjoyed the banh mi! Overall, friendly staff and great drinks/food. Would definitely come back to support this local gem!
