I know I can always find a quality gift item for my garden-loving friends, a unique perennial for that odd spot in the yard, or a funky planter to make the perfect table setting. My most recent garden problem was finding a nicely shredded mulch that didn't leave behind big chunks at the end of each growing season. Lavocat's to the rescue! They have a wonderful hardwood fine-shredded mulch that's just perfect. If you're like me, and have a smaller garden - bagged mulch is what we need - whole truck loads just don't work. The knowledgeable and very helpful staff at Lavocat's will load your vehicle and you'll be very pleased with the results in your garden.

Thanks to my partner, who has better instincts than mine. I would drive past it, thinking this location wasn't worth stopping. I won't write much about Weeks' Nursery. If you are looking for something more than just buying plants, be sure to visit them. A few times, the whole experience made my senses feel very close to magical moments. I even thought The Gray Cat would talk to me, but he was just showing me around.

Today it's filled with watering cans, garden implements, decorative bric a brac and some very pretty flowers. Any questions we had were answered promptly and courteously. Considering it's prime Main Street location, I expected the prices to be jacked up a bit. We were pleasantly surprised. The geraniums were a buck cheaper than the competitors and the hanging baskets were a steal. The place was attractive and nicely designed. They also do landscaping and patio installation. They seem to have grown, it would be nice to have a few more garden carts for easier plant selection.

Best quick remedy is always sod. Yelp steered me to Lakeside. Super nice folks, class operation, great pricing, and the sod looks fantastic. No dried up crunchy sod here! BTW - you don't have to purchase in large quantities! Perfect for the do-it-yourself garden enthusiast.

In a quandary, I wondered how many bags of department store bags I'd need. Hmmmm.... As we all know our phones listen to everything we talk about.. ahem.... I began to find local places and one of them was Lakeside Sod on Goodrich rd.- then I remembered that I had seen them at the Home and Garden show in Hamburg, NY... Well, that was the best decision I've ever made. The soil is quality. They make it themselves. There is no "junk" in the soil. It's fine, rich, almost euphoric. I ended up getting 3 yards to fill my garden . Wait until you see my garden! The following year I discovered they sell mini bags for a super inexpensive price ( less than $20 ) it's about knee high and manageable to handle. This year, I also discovered resealable mini bags of mulch from them. O M G !! I just love this place. I happen to run into the owner a few weeks ago and he thanked me for my business- that never happens in today's world. How great is that?!?!!! The office staff that cashed me out are very friendly. Lastly, I'd like to mention the two gentlemen that loaded my car ( several times ) out back . They both were the most helpful, friendly, ( and strong! ) guys ever. They were very attentive when I drove back there, I did not have to wait around. You can tell that they were "people persons" and grateful for the little bit of my business. That made me smile. Since the first time I ever walked into her store, a few years ago, this lady always has what I need and just what I am looking for. Priced right antiques, folk art, country art, useful things, spoil yourself things, linens,candles, kitchenware, floral arrangements, sleds!, I could go on. This store is right in the heart of the Clarence Hollow and is worth stopping in to browse and visit and mmmmmmm just smell. A light and pleasant scent is in there although I cannot for the life of me identify it. Starrgate General sells something for everybody and Jane's eye can help with decor dilemna. If she doesn't have it , she can find it. If you have a minute stop in and if you have a day scheduled for antiquing or browsing in the hollow, make sure you have Starrgate General on your list.
