They make every child feel special and really create a family atmosphere. We are planning to go back next year for Pre-K.

It's a wonderfully spacious and bright space that invites kids to sit down and get some homework done. This branch of 826 National opened in October 2005 and serves Seattle Public School District and greater Seattle area school districts. Its concept is a simple one: kids are welcome to come in for three hours after school. They may receive any sort of homework assistance in any subject from a trained 826 volunteer. The volunteer will help them and after the coursework is complete, the kids are encouraged to complete a half hour of reading with the tutor and also dedicate some time to writing. During the year, the centre hosts benefits like a dance marathon or their Mustache-a-Thon. And they have a softball team "The Oscar Wildes"... and here's where I need to be honest. I am a little biased. I know a half dozen 826'ers socially and every single one of them give tirelessly of their time to these kids that so desperately need it. And their satisfaction comes from the knowledge that the kids might get bitten by that bug... you know the one, the one that pushes us to learn more, be more, aspire for greater things! 826 Seattle is simply awesome!…read more Started several years ago in San Francisco by talented author and McSweeny founder David Eggers and his wife, 826 Valencia had so many admirers back in my hometown. 826 is known for its youth-focused creative writing and tutoring programing, so when I noticed they had opened up shop in Seattle, I was thrilled to check out their workshops for our little writer. For the most part, the classes are geared to kids aged 6-18, We have a tough customer in our midst--thoughtful, independent, creative, and opinionated. Our little Mark Twain Jr. came from the 826 workshop beaming and excited about the creative writing project she is working on in class. That is always the best gauge as far as I am concerned! The workshop space is a hidden but large, colorful classroom area behind their retail space. The teacher to student ratios in her class were generous to ensure all kids are getting great instruction and guidance. The teachers are young and energetic, the space was inviting, and the classes (I can't believe this) for now are gratis. That' free, people! For this reason, they seem to want to understandably touch the most students possible, so if your are enrolled in one class, they will only wait list you in another. Seems fair. What a great mission: spreading creativity, excitement about writing, improving writing skills and doing the community a great service. Anything purchased in their retail shop (think robots, space travel oriented items, and art books) supports the 826 organization and funds classes. A great spot for innovative programming for kids not geared to route memorization, competition and test taking. Here's to thoughtful kids who think differently and enjoy creating and writing!

The teacher, Ms. Nikki, is truly phenomenal and has a special gift for connecting with kids and helping them believe in their own creativity the studio is warm, welcoming, and safe, and kids are encouraged to be themselves, try new things, and make bold creative choices without fear of "messing up." Class sizes are small, so our daughter gets plenty of individual attention and guidance while still enjoying a fun group atmosphere with other young artists. She comes home after each class proud of what she's created, using real art materials and techniques that make her feel like a "real artist." Over time, we've watched her confidence grow right along with her skills, from learning new mediums to experimenting with color, shading, and detail in ways she never would have tried on her own. She looks forward to every class, and we love seeing how much joy and calm art brings her at the start of a busy week. The proof is in their success-my kids scored in the high 80 and 90 percentiles on their ISEEs, were accepted to their private schools of choice, and earned 5s on AP Physics and Calculus exams. My son is a senior, and with Lisa's guidance, achieved a 1530 on the SAT, missing only one math question-no superscore, just one test. Thus far, he has not been turned down by any of the top-tier engineering programs to which he has applied. My younger child is now working diligently with Lisa to maximize his SAT scores as he prepares for college applications in the fall. What makes this all the more impressive is the fact that both my children have dyslexia and dysgraphia-school has not come easy for them. Whether working directly with Lisa or one of her expert team members, you can expect compassion, professionalism, flexibility, and a commitment to meet your child at his or level, emotionally and academically. Lisa and her team are exacting and demanding, but with an understanding that kids' anxiety levels and workloads fluctuate through the school year and need to be taken into consideration and adapted to. Working with Lisa, I felt supported as a parent, and more importantly, I knew that while my children were working hard, they too felt supported. My kids have tried preparing for standardized tests using workbooks and online/in-person group classes, but both report the one-on-one experience they have had with Lisa and her team to be the game-changer. Not only are Lisa and her team effective, they are kind! I have enjoyed all my interactions with them, and the kids do not balk when it is time to get down to work. They also feel motivated to get their work done between sessions, so they are prepared for their next meeting-with no helicoptering from me. This is how test prep should be.

It is so awesome to see pics of my two guys building ramps together or cuddling during story time, and my fella really loves seeing our son grow and change along with the other kids in the class. The second thing I adore about our class is the talent: our teacher, Monica, is actually an opera singer, and she brings her beautiful singing to every circle time. Anyone who's heard a group of parents droning along to a song knows what a blessing a gifted teacher can be. Monica also provides a very laid back, attachment friendly style. When my son was scared of one of the circle time routines, she altered the practice to help him adjust, and she came up with clever ideas to help ease him into the routines of preschool. We also have a gifted "parent educator" who doesn't cram education down our throats but offers ad hoc support, tips and understanding. Third pro is the mixed ages. Any kid 1 - 3 years old can enroll. The bigger kids learn sibling skills and get to show off for the littler ones, and the younger ones get to copy bigger kids. It's a fascinating process to observe how fast the little ones learn. Finally, I love that I feel comfortable and at home in our class. The class doesn't operate along gender lines, which makes it feel queer friendly. The other parents who attend with their kids are friendly and open. Our teacher has a lot to do with that atmosphere. Cons? As I see it, this preschool's only flaw is that the co-op is perhaps too laid-back about organizing, which means we hover on the brink of under-enrollment. In short, I couldn't recommend our Saturday preschool more. Even though my own son is close to aging out, I hope the class will continue for many more years because it is so wonderful.

The stars of the show are the wonderful teacher Monica and Parent Educator Glenn. They are immensely wise and talented and gifted teachers. Thanks to the wonderful Monica and Glenn we have beautiful animated singing during circle time, ukulele-playing and sign language instruction too! We look forward to Saturday mornings in preschool because of these great teachers and fun multilingual families. We'll be sad to age out (though it won't be for a while) . . . hopefully by then the age range will be expanded so our son can continue to have fun being part of this community.

Mind you my daughter does not get excited about school because she struggles to understand what is happening when we brought her in and she was so excited to sit down and take the assessment and every time we say we're going to tutor she comes with a smile on her face. That alone makes me extremely happy. She has greatly improved in her math since you've started just a couple months ago honestly, I don't know what I would do without them. I am so happy to see her excited to learn and understanding things easier. If you are thinking about it, I highly recommend going for it. You won't regret it!
