This is for both Coachman Inn and Cafe (and Steakhouse, for that matter). It's one building, and…read morethe bartender sells the rooms for the motel. I stopped in town at 8:30 PM, Kathy's Kitchen was closed, and this place was open. They fry their own chicken (it's delicious), they have a range of stuff in the salad bar - they actually do make their own food here, and it definitely shows. Very good value - for example, their steaks are just barely over $1/oz, which is hard to find at a restaurant. Your entree also comes with the salad bar, for what it's worth, and the salad bar has a soup (and a bucket of salted herring when I was there). 4+ stars for the Cafe, which had a couple of local families there and is clearly a worthwhile place to be. The bar - meh. No beer on tap. It's more just a place to hang out when you need a place to hang out. But then again, there are other bars in town, this isn't a bar (notice the name - Inn, Cafe, Steakhouse), etc., etc. I could walk to a bar, but I'd rather write a review. Finally, the hotel. Very reasonably priced, comfortable beds, modern conveniences - good Internet, flat-screen TV on the wall with extra channels, fridge and microwave. I was going to give this place 4 stars, but then realized that I would in fact detour to Cooperstown from a reasonable radius to stay here rather than one of the other towns in either direction. Okay, the nearest towns would be Valley City and Grand Forks, both of which are larger and are not really all that near, but I would still rather stay here. 5 stars it is.

We got there after lunch-time and the young man who was working the restaurant told us that every Wednesday they feature Kumlas and that there were still some available. We asked what they are and he explained that a Kumla is a Norwegian Dumpling. They sounded good and since we were on vacation we decided to try them. They are REALLY GOOD!! I assume that the rest of the menu is as good! The food was really good, the service was superb, and it was a very pleasant experience.

I also got the Green Glow Smoothie and it was good as well. You can definitely taste the ginger. Definitely will be back. Great place to eat if counting macros and wanting to eat healthy.

The menu is clearly marked for various food restrictions, which (as a long time gluten-free diner) I really appreciate. I got the featured salad, honey and spice, which was nice, but not mind blowing. The honey mustard dressing was just okay and the blackened chicken was not very flavorful. They left off the walnuts - I had to go back and get them when I realized they were missing. The ordering process was surpringly perfunctory - you have to know what you want, they apparently aren't there to help. And, when you go to through the line, you get no opportunity to customize your order, unless you shout over the partition. When I got to the dressing station, she asked me if I wanted the recommended amount of dressing - how could I possibly know what that is? My biggest complaint, besides the indifferent service (considering they just opened a few days ago, you think they'd be trying to ensure people have a really positive experience), was the surly attitude I got when I expressed a concern about gluten: you can get chips or bread at the end of the line and I asked for chips, but the person waiting on me reached for the bread, and I said, "don't touch the bread before you touch my chips." She got very offended. Among other things, she said "you have to ask for allergy accommodation at the beginning of the line." I think ensuring my food isn't cross contaminated is reasonable at any point in the ordering process. I've been gluten-free for 25 years and I've gotten poisoned by careless people so many times. Her attitude was really off-putting. Next time, I will use the app, so I can easily customize my order and I don't have to interact with the staff. ADDENDUM Someone immediately contacted me from the restaurant and offered me a coupon for a return visit, which I very much appreciate (though I have not had a chance to redeem it, and hopefully change my impression of the service).
