Chickpea pancake with mushrooms and Persian fetta

Bloodwood oozes charm. It's like meeting a tall, dark and handsome man with a hint of mystery. From the mood lighting, darn good wine list and a range of sharing plates, I could happily go here every weekend. Bloodwood has the balance right in the interior with exposed brick kind of rustic style yet still classy. Anywhere else and you'd said they are trying too hard to be trendy, but you don't get that pretentious vibe here. It can be a bit exxy as you need a few shared plates to feel satisfied, but hey I wasn't paying! We shared the polenta chips with a Gorgonzola dipping sauce. They were piping hot and either I use too much sauce or there wasn't enough for the amount of chips given, because I was wiping the bottom of the bowl quickly. The chickpea pancake with mushroom and Persian feta was crispy, but perhaps a bit too salty for me. The ribs are alright, bit messy and definitely not for a first date as you'll need to bring your floss for sure. The other dish that surprised me was the duck breast with sticky rice and watermelon rind. Interesting textures and flavours, and shows some creative flare. Bloodwood will literally drain me dry because I'm in!

A couple of different friends recommended Bloodwood for my short trip to Sydney. They only take reservations for groups over 8 people, under 8 people bookings are walk in only. We had no trouble getting a table for 6 at 7pm on a Wednesday though, which was great. Newly opened, the place was understandably packed. It's a small space, with 2 levels. Standard cool fit out with bare light bulbs hanging from the ceiling, and old furniture fixed to the wall above your head. The food was good. Created for sharing, the dishes range from small to medium. You'd need more than one of their large dishes to fill you up for dinner. My favourite dish was the barramundi, served in a sweet broth with greens. The polenta chips were a great idea too, I've never tried them before. I wasn't a big fan of the ribs and was disappointed with the prawn, mussel and melon dish, it was very bland. The service was a bit slow, but I presume it's because it's a place were they don't mind you lingering over a long dinner.

Favourite spots in Newtown! Love the polenta chips!! Chicken with mango salad, pork belly with black bean and scallops. Highly recommend this place for groups all designed for sharing.

From the street, this doesn't look like much but once inside, this place is fun!! I went on the last night of service for the year so the waitstaff was dressed in wigs, prom dresses, etc. so fun!! So naturally my friend & I joined in. The food was delicious and the service was good. They were out of a lot of options which was disappointing but we had the cuddlefish, cheese fries, ribs, and the chickpea pancake. We also had desserts of the trifle and the chocolate torte. The patrons were having fun too!! There was a large woman wearing a pink wig and a sparkly sequin dress who was part of the waitstaff. She was so kind to us at the beginning and throughout our meal but after we paid and gave her a tip, she turned into quite a bitch. She was rude, grumpy, and this behavior was not promoted by anything. I wish we didn't give her a tip, really this is why I can't give a higher rating. Very disappointing after such a good experience

What a fantastic find in Newtown, a hip Sydney neighborhood. This was the MOST CREATIVE AND INTERESTING MEAL WE HAD IN AUSTRALIA DURING A THREE WEEK VISIT. The atmosphere is casual and stylish; the wait staff uniformly knowledge and charming. The food --which is designed for sharing-- was inventive and delicious with unique combination of ingredients and textures. Everything we had was exceptionally good: a salad with fig and mushrooms, a salad of lentils, beetroot and tomato with black sesame seeds, and polenta chips for starters, followed by poached barramundi with celery, shrimp and scallop with yellow curry and skirt steak with bbq shiitakes. The four of us shared two deserts: a trifle and an almond cake with poached plums and lemon curd. We are leaving Sydney tomorrow but if we stayed we would definitely think about returning tomorrow. The charcuterie platter looked incredible!

    Polenta chips and gorgonzola sauce

This restaurant actually lives up to the hype, a rare find. I'm giving it 5 stars on those polenta chips with gorgonzola sauce dip alone. They were the best chips I've ever eaten. Ever. They served them hot to us and warned us but damn you ignore that and you'll discover the hard way like we did they were freshly hot. The interior is trendy and appealing, it's not a large space nor do they take reservations under a decent party size but we enjoyed the vibe none the less. We were seated at their front of house tiny tables, which we didn't mind because we were only ordering small dishes. But spolier alert, its the high traffic area and you'll be witnessing all the folk coming and going. Their menu is small but very creative, interesting and you'll be able to find a choice among it somewhere. We ordered the grilled octopus/pastrami and fried pork belly/cuttlefish. I must be frank, the cuttlefish dish was a bit more on the drowned-in-sauce side for my tastes but quality ingredients and well made, almost braised style. My partner raved on about the octopus & pastrami meal, he would've ordered another if we could fit it on our mini table top. We didn't order any alcoholic beverages on this occasion but they did have a fine selection, including cocktails I'll investigate at a later date. Truthfully, I would simply order multiple servings of the polenta chips and drinks, that's enjoyable enough. The service was adequately friendly and did try to fit all our dishes on our pint sized table without commenting on how teensy it was. I'd vote this restaurant is your best choice for evening/afternoon dining in Newtown, they'll always be something you'll try on the menu that tastes great without breaking the bank. Happy to return anytime.

$9 for polenta chips enough to feed a small family. Winning!

The café occupies the corner of Garden st and Henderson Road and is industriously styled with cool marble and pink interior and a hanging garden. There's plenty of space inside and out, so I you won't be waiting long for a table. Serving Toby's estate coffee and a range of modern Australian dishes for both breakfast or lunch, as well as some sweet treats, is a popular café with the locals and visitors to the area alike. I've visited now on more than one occasion and the café is continuously striving to perfect their menu offerings. A group of us dined on this day to sample a number of the menu choices. The Grumpy's special of chili scrambled eggs were presented atop sourdough bread and a side of heirloom carrots, a heatlhy and wholesome meal. The winner of the day, and also one recommended to us was the Green Pea Smash with burrata and prosciutto. A great combination of flavours. From the sweets menu, we went for the Fig Brioche, topped with macadamia, honey, ricotta and vanilla ice cream (in place of the regular fairy floss). There were a few fruits topping it and would love to have a few more. The Grumpy's granola and pannacotta is also not only beautiful, but delicious and served with a raspberry pannacotta. Could be a sweet or breakfast ;) The venue also serves the famous cronuts (a mix of a doughnut and croissant, filled with a range of insides like cream, Nutella, caramel and topped with oreos etc. Surprise yourself. The guys at grumpy's are always friendly and hospitable. Make sure you pay them a visit.

The service is spotty at best, but not unusual for this part of Sydney where the staff are more likely to be part time students who just came off a hard night at the local clubs than full time hospitality folk. So after some confusion around table numbers and what we did or didn't order, the food eventually made an appearance. The Huevous Rancheros looked very good, and I am told was quite good. The French toast was small in serving - but very tasty. It left me room to try the PB&J off the kids menu. Very basic is appearance and taste - but still fun. The seating area is very spacious and the ambience feels very Sunday brunch. Relaxing and cool. It's a quiet part of town generally on weekends. We followed up with the "crack pie" which didn't crack at all, instead it was a gooey melted version. Still taste nice and the praline ice cream that came with it was very good. Needs some attention to detail - but I'd come back again.

Given its in the Eveleigh Carriageworks space, it wasn't particularly full which we liked as we could actually hear each other talk. A good range of wines, though none of the cocktails appealed.
