Its all about great vegan BBQ of course. Its not only great vegan cuisine its great BBQ overall. Chef Chris was voted best SLC BBQ in general - vegan or meat! On Wednesday Chef Chris featured a General Tso's Chicken served with a noodle side. It was spot on in all respects, delicious, perfectly balanced between spicy and sweet. General Tso's is not easy to do, let alone make a perfect spot on vegan version. I must respect any restaurant that offers a single dish service. You know its going to be great because they are going all in. On Friday we came back for the BBQ, wow just wow. Chef Chris takes the best of American BBQ traditions, and adds his own slow cooked, smoky, saucy magic. He makes his own seitan and smokes it for days to get it just right. He bakes delicious rolls, makes all his own sauces and sides too. You can even get a perfect North Carolina mustard BBQ sauce here. Rarely am I able to go to a place and eat the menu in one go. This would be the first since they only do take-out. I ordered ahead since any meat order (not vegan) needs to be pre-ordered. We had 1/2 of jackfruit, tempeh burnt ends, seitan brisket, and Korean bbq strips. My vegetarian spouse loves everything. The burnt end was good but not a favorite. The other three, we will definitely go back for. For a place that specialized in vegan bbq, they do not disappoint with the food for all the carnivores. The brisket, pork belly, chicken, and slow cooked pork were all so juicy and flavorful. Truly truly some of the best bbq in SLC. The sides are also great. Very good complement to the bbq. Favorites of the sides are the Cuban beans and the slaw. The rolls are just necessary to mop up all the sauce. I also love all the hot sauce that you could sample at the location. Awww. Oh yeah! Summer is here! Praise God. Today, on Cinco de Mayo, we headed to Blatchs Backyard BBQ (blatchsbackyardbbq.com) up on I (eye) street in Salt Lake City. The map app took us there straight away. It's nestled in a comfy community.  You'll want to keep your eyes open for the sign that's up on the front of the home. The welcome sign on the front door read "come on in" so we did,  and with that, we entered into a truly magnificent environment filled with the smells of BBQ; and it's the real deal!  Trappings of BBQ were on display with BBQ sauce, frozen vacuum packed BBQ delights, breads of all kinds, and many other yummy items.   We ordered the Seitan Brisket,  Smoked Jack fruit,  Tempeh Burnt Ends, Korean BBQ Strips, and fresh baked dinner rolls. Yep! They make bread and rolls fresh on site. We took the BBQ home. I am one of those people who never writes Yelp reviews.. In fact this is my first positive yelp review EVER in 15 years on Yelp! It happens that Blatch's is one of those food experiences that is so wonderful it inspires such an action. I'm from the SF Bay Area (which inarguably has some truly amazing world class food), and I can vouch that Blatch's is right up there with the best. You can believe the other rave reviews here. Every thing I've tried is delicious. Blatch's is not just good vegan food, it is good food period. Hats off to you, and thank you Chris Blatch for what you have created. You are a culinary genius. In a world where animal agriculture is contributing to an accelerating climate crisis, this is sorely needed. I wish Blatch's could be here in the Bay Area, heck, I wish it could be everywhere.. I heard about this place in some Best of SLC newsletter aaaaand I'm trusting all recommendations for this source from now on. You go to the cutest house, meet the cutest couple whose love for providing epic vegan bbq is so apparent, it makes you want to quit your day job and go work for them. (I'll do anything, water your plants, wash your dishes, etc). I had to wait to try the bbq sand which and potato salad I chose because I was on a really bad first date whose nascar driving made me super sick, but wow, I woke up that next day and my bbq breakfast did NOT disappoint. It's hard for me to compare Blatch's to other BBQ I have had in the past because it is its own unique BEAST with lots of SLC character. Shoutout to them for having a menu item called the Angry Korean and having a sticker that says "The Church of Veganism of Platter Day Sauce." I ordered the jackfruit pretzel monster with green chile mac and vheese (let's call it what it is). The menu doesn't lie! The pretzel monster was one sloppy MONSTER of a sandwich possessing a very tart flavor balanced out somewhat and complemented by the jackfruit's sweetness. The crispy onions added a little bit of much needed crisp, and the garlic aioli was icing on the cake. The mac and vheese was a creamy, flavorful side that gave me a second wind. Having lived in NM, I was expecting green chiles to be chopped up and placed inside the mac n vheese itself. But no, Blatch's somehow incorporated its flavor into the vheese, giving it a nice kick. As I was leaving, Chef Blatch (Who is very passionate about his craft and means business) gave me some FREE ROLLS! I toasted some up for breakfast the next morning, and they were fantastic! They were a little sweet, yet spiced, pillowy, and textured perfectly. WELL DONE BLATCH! The food is unique, and straight ‍ in quality! This is now one of my top picks in SLC. What a delight!! I purposefully stopped at Blatch's on a Friday while traveling the country solo, so that I could get my hands on some vegan BBQ. Everything was absolutely delicious! My favorites were definitely the wrap (with Mac n cheese ), the smoked brisket, and the tempeh burnt ends. I also had these orange and maybe peppermint confection filled chocolates that he was selling on behalf of another vendor that were amazing. I got there before the dinner rush, so I had some time to talk to blanch about my travels. He was very kind and welcoming and even invited me to hang out on the back patio. He topped it all off by bringing me a complimentary order of his wood fired sourdough that I ended up saving some of to eat with hummus later. I'm soooo excited to review this company with you because I really enjoy SUPPORTING SMALL BUSINESS'S. and  the owner Christopher definitely deserves a shout out !  He has so much character, and he works so hard at providing all his customers with the best quality food and a great experience. He's located in the avenues downtown SLC. He has super FIRE BBQ   He also offers VEGAN and non vegan options which for BBQ is SO UNIQUE! They do pre-order, catering and takeout because  he feels BBQ should be shared with family and good friends in a backyard, their own home, or somewhere comfortable.  Which I agree . We took ours home and had a great night with family eating and watching scary movies . All the vegan items are in house crafted with items from his organic garden when it's in bloom. All his sauces are made from scratch and new ones are constantly rotating through. Anytime you can introduce plant base to barbecue it's a win . As far as the classic BBQ, everything is slow smoked and it tastes so moist, tender, & delicious. You can really taste all the delightful nuances of the cooking journey recorded in the meat itself. Blatch's is by far one of the best places I've ever eaten. I travel the country for work. Im literally on the road for months at a time and have eaten many many great vegan spots on the road. And I have to say Blatchs is one of those once in a lifetime experiences. Not only is the food made by some of the sweetest people you've ever met (TRUE small family business) but easily the TASTIEST. The whole vibe is so chill there. The chef is also the one taking your order. Ugh I couldn't get enough there. I even bought some of their refrigerated stuff to cook at my hotel. That's how good it was. I am gluten free and Chris was so kind to go the extra mile to make me something gluten-free since it was Wednesday night and they were only serving the Reuben Sandwich. I am honestly so sad I didn't find this place earlier! Tucked away in the avenues, the owner runs this business from their home. The place is very cute and homey (I applaud their taste, the plants and decor were very vibey). They had a very sweet cat, which I think adds to the overall experience. The owners were very kind. Me and my brother are extremely indecisive, so they were very helpful and let us try some of the bbq. Everything is made in house, including the baked goods & desserts, which are made by their wife. We ended up getting 1/2 lb each of the jackfruit, tempeh, and korean bbq seitan. We also got the potato salad and a raspberry sweet roll. The place is takeout only, so we went elsewhere to chow down. The jackfruit was surprisingly my favorite-- I usually don't go for jackfruit at vegan places because they tend to not wash off the brine and it always tastes a bit sour-- but not this one! It was so tender and really mimicked pulled pork well. The tempeh was also so tender, and the raspberries he put on top paired nicely with the bbq flavor. The korean bbq seitan was also tender and enjoyable, I just personally thought it was on the sweeter side because of the gochujang they use. The potato salad was very good and honestly could pass as not even vegan. And the roll was good. I was super soft and you can tell they use real raspberries for the filling. I just wished there was more icing (very minor complaint). It was a lot of food, and all of it came to ~$25 per person, which I think is very reasonable considering we still had leftovers. This is a super cute spot. You would never know it's a restaurant. It looks like a house with a lion coming out the door out to the sidewalk. That's how busy they are. It's one guy in there making your order. I'm not a vegetarian, but I wouldn't give this place a try it's not bad for vegetarian . I got the mac & cheese. I would say it wasn't bad. It just really wasn't mac & cheese for me because it had no cheese it was just tasted like pasta with a little seasoning and some green onions on it. It is local I like supporting small businesses. I would go back and try other things. I did get the brisket sandwich. I would give it a five out of a 0 to 10 scale on appearance. It looks like a 10 it's big they give you your money is worth as far as a non-vegetarian eating a meatless barbecue sandwich. One of the best meals I've had in years. When you enter Blatch's home, the first thing you notice is the aroma. Rich, smoky, and sweet. You feel like you've walked into the home of a dear friend. Across the kitchen island that serves as the register is a man in his element. Juggling around smoky stacks of tempeh, pots of beans and soft bread rolls, Blatch is fully present. When I walked in, he knew the names of the people before me and after me. This is someone who is passionate about feeding his community the best food he can make. I got the Big Texan, and potato salad and beans. I took it to the backyard and sat under a beautiful shady tree in the early evening. Every bite is packed with flavor; there's so much going on but it's somehow still complementary without overpowering the other elements. I shed a few tears. It sounds ridiculous but I did. As one of the last customers of the night, Blatch came over and gave me a takeaway box of leftover cherry-infused mushrooms he had toiled over for days. Greatest dining experience I can remember. Blatch is warm and welcoming, and I loved the Mac Daddy sandwich, a wild combo of Mac n cheese and vegan brisket with a side of slaw. Everything was excellent with wonderful flavors. With their hot honey for Christmas, and their makeshift free neighborhood market last summer with their abundance of goods from their garden. I need to take a moment to say that Blatch's Vegan BBQ deserves every ounce of the praise it receives. Not only is the grub phenomenal ( Honestly the best I've ever had and I've been a plant based chef in dozens of different restaurants, industrial kitchens and catering companies over the past 10 years.) but he also happens to be one of the most compassionate, genuine individuals I've ever had the joy of meeting. If you're lucky enough to have had the pleasure of Chris welcoming you into his home/kitchen for a meal do him and the world a favor and write a review! Not that he NEEDS your help in that regard however, the food speaks for itself ;) On top of all this, everything is 100% vegan, cruelty free and crafted with such delicate care you can taste it in every bite. So far I've only had the pleasure of trying the Pretzel Monster with his V-brisket as the protein and I could honestly die happy if it were to be my breakfast, lunch and dinner for the remaining duration of my time on this planet.
