After a disappointing birthday dinner, this was on my list of ice cream shops to try! I am so happy we did! Monkeywrench was the best save of the night. My Besties & I got a double in a waffle cone trying out the different flavors. It's a walk up window at the Gallivan Center near the bottom of the steps from the ice skating rink. Cute little shop. You can get your order & walk around or sit down at the benches nearby. It wasn't busy so the cashier got our orders to us quickly. It's anti-dairy all made with fresh ingredients. We ordered - Strawberry Shortcake, Banana Stand, Blue Moon, Budderfinger, & Butter Pecan. We will definitely be back again with our families! read more

Good ice cream for being vegan, but I prefer the non-vegan options within a few minutes walk from here instead. And I've also found it hard to even find a flavor that they offer that I even want to order. It also feels like the service here takes a while -- even when there aren't lots of people ahead of you. read more

This ice cream shop is dairy free and we ordered 5 flavors to try out. Nothing was amazing and two flavors were hard to finish. They also don't offer samples so it's hard to know what you will get from the unique combinations. read more

I don't typically eat vegan ice cream because I don't like the texture, but I was pleasantly surprised with how creamy this was. I ordered the cookies and cream and some variant of chocolate and absolutely loved both flavors. I can definitely taste the coconut cream base but the flavors worked very well together. They don't have anywhere to sit and you order at a counter outside so be prepared to take this away to eat. read more

Wonderful restaurant. I'm dairy free, and having it be an "anti-dairy establishment" is very comforting. My boyfriend is allergic to cashews, and everything labeled was wonderful. Worker was very kind, and was quick to make our milkshakes. I've been looking for vegan shakes for months since Sweet Hazel stopped making theirs, and these ones definitely don't disappoint! My evaluation of the ambience might be off, but since we came by on the day of the biggest No Kings Protest, it was definitely hard to access. All they sell is non-dairy completely vegan ice cream, which is 100% going to turn some people off, no question. Whatever. This may be the best ice cream I have ever had. Anywhere. It's absolutely delicious. And I am hardly a vegan. We tried four flavors. The Salty Bastard (pretzels, caramel, potato chips and more) was amazing. The Mud Pie was decadent. The "Budderfinger" had giant pieces of candy in it. The Chocolate Fudge Brownie was very chocolate-y and very brown-ie. You will not miss the absence of dairy one bit. I was pretty bummed that they don't let you taste-test any flavors...I got the banana one and it tasted like a Kind bar...the bumpy pumpkin was pretty good but very rich. I wouldn't have gotten those flavors if I had the chance to try them before purchasing them...The cashier lady was nice. There is no inside seating so we just sat at some of the tables outside front. I was in town for a conference and staying at the hotel nearby. One of my colleagues suggested we check it out and I'm so glad we did. We ended up going back again before we left. Everything is dairy free but you'd honestly new know it, there were several gluten free and cashew free options. Everything I tried was delicious. The cashier was so sweet and made the best suggestions when I wasn't sure what to pick. I highly recommend it to everyone in the area and I may just have to fly back to SLC just to have more tea & biscuits. It was such a unique but super delicious flavor. read more

I discovered this anti-dairy ice cream establishment while out to dinner. Their name, Monkey wrench and sign for anti-dairy treats piqued my interest. I stopped on my way home for a pint to-go. I wasn't sure what to expect. Sometimes you just don't know with lavendar flavors or even non-dairy products. (So anyway, I got a lavendar pint, and it was really good!) It had a nice flavor, and their was a nice coconut flavor, I assume from coconut milk? It was tasty, and they had lots of other flavors I'd go back to try, like peanut butter brownie and birthday cake. The employees were pleasant as well. read more

This was recommended to me by a staff member at Franklin and I'm very glad he did! This is definitely some of the best ice cream I've ever tried and it's all vegan. As someone who can't have more than a few bites of ice cream because of the dairy, this place is too perfect! The staff was really nice and happy to answer all questions I had about the ice cream and the place itself. My guy and I split the Lemon Poppyseed Poundcake since it was the most unique flavor we saw and it was soo good, we wish we had gotten separate scoops. The flavor was very well-balanced and light. It was too perfect! I can only imagine how great the other flavors are. Highly recommend and will definitely stop by here again whenever I come back to the area. read more

This place is OK. The flavors are meh and taste like nothing spectacular. Their portions are small for the price compared to other ice-cream shops. The server was nice and I like the ordering from a window concept though. I recommend going to Black Smith ice-cream instead- same flavors, same price but delicious. read more

FYI: This is an ice cream stand, not an ice cream shop... an ALL VEGAN ice cream stand at that! I got the two scoops of Cookies and Cream because I my much of a fan of the other flavors. The Lemon Shortbread Poppyseed piqued my interest, but I thought it would be too sweet. I got a chance to try the Lemon and instantly regretted my decision. Really fun spot and good non-dairy options. Some options like the Watermelon Sorbet weren't the best, but Mint Chip, the homemade Butterfinger, Cookie Dough and others were awesome. Wandered around the Galivan center while eating. Parking isn't great and we've skipped monkey wrench a few times due to not being able to find parking. read more

Monkeywrench is a quaint little ice cream stand that I wanted to check out while in the city. My best friend and I walked here from the City Creek Center and it was a pleasant walk. It's a walk up stand so you order from the outside and they hand you the ice cream. I'm a big lavender lover so of course I had to go with that flavor. However, I'm not the biggest fan of coconut based vegan ice cream but this was delicious! The lavender, blueberry and coconut pairing was very complimentary and the texture was 10/10. I was hoping to try the tea and biscuits but this was a good second choice. Would definitely come back if I'm in the area again. read more

Leaving a five star review solely for the star of the show, hot fudge sundae. I hardly eat sweets or ice cream! Monkey wrench had me eating a hot fudge sundae thrice in a week! Let's blame Utah summer shall we? The best ice cream I've ever had. Now, I also got the pink sugar cookie and it was such a delight but you will want to keep it refrigerated. I did try other flavors such as cookies and cream and whatever flavors my husband got so I know their other options are amazing but I'll keep day dreaming of a hot fudge sundae whenever I crave some ice cream from here on out. Side note: parking situation isn't the best but the ice cream is worth it. Whether you're vegan or not! Trust me! read more

It's so great that a 100% dairy-free ice cream place exists. This place has unique and classic flavors, something for everyone, and friendly service. Rocky Road was delicious and I'd get it again. The mini marshmallows (also vegan) and large almond chunks were highlights. I forgot to take pics of the actual ice cream, haha. You order at the window and then take it to-go. We were asked to confirm our order multiple times and it was still wrong, so there's some work to be done in that department. It's also pretty expensive for tiny scoops, but the quality is strong. If you're near Gallivan Center, it's worth a try. read more

Snugged in a small alleyway, this location seemed like it got a decent amount of foot traffic. There was a line so we waited a bit at the window (shop was closed since it was late?) Though they did seem like they were trying to be efficient, we still had to wait quite a bit. I unfortunately could not finish my single scoop of chocolate fudge due to it's grainy sandy texture and extremely extremely sweet flavor; think hitting the back of your throat and stuck there type of sweetness. The texture was so sandy I could not get past it. I've had ice cream flavors that were misses before but I ended up finishing them regardless. This one I tried but could not finish due to those reasons... My partner enjoyed his though so at least one of us was able to make their wait and costs worth it. Unfortunately due to the wait along with the flavor and texture, I do not think I'll be back. read more

Walked by this place and had to check it out! Vegan ice cream... Sign me up! We ordered a coffee, chocolate ice cream and an avocado with the espresso on the side. The taste was so yummy and delicious and didn't have so much of that bland vegan taste. The service was awesome too. I was eating in the area and love trying new ice cream shops. I really liked the icecream itself, and thought that the rocky road and cookie dough were great, and super creamy. The price point wasn't terrible over all. It appears that the shop is only available from a streetside window, so no one can enter the shop, similar to Covid restrictions. It looked nice inside, so I'm not sure why they don't let people in. You also don't get to touch the screen to select a tip, which means that the employee asks if you want to tip, which really bugs me, and almost made me lower my rating. They aren't clear at all on the allergens from the menu itself specifically nut allergies. By making dairy free icecream, you should indicate what your base is made of, but it doesn't show. read more

Takes the cake for best dessert in salt lake. Even if you're not dairy-free, this ice cream is something to write home about. Such delicious flavors. Nothing tastes "artificial " because it's not. Real ingredients in the flavors and add ons. Got the banana brownie and chocolate chip cookie dough, both were fantastic. Wish the scoops were bigger!! Real house made brownie and cookie pieces were amazing. Wish there were more locations, will certainly miss this place when we leave. read more

You will NOT miss the dairy in their delicious ice cream! The flavors are fun and it' was hard to choose. I went with the recommendation of the employee and got a scoop of Budderfinger and a scoop of their seasonal Ginger Snap and was very happy. My husband and I came here to check out their vegan sweets. We got a cookie sandwich, a brownie, and two types of ice cream flavors: cookies and cream and birthday cake. The cookies sandwich was a little hard to eat, seeing as it was frozen, but it was still very very good. Both of the ice cream flavors and brownie were also delicious. We took it to go seeing as it was more of a to go place, however the two guys working were very friendly and nice. Yummy yummy vegan and gluten free ice cream!!!! It's so nice to know you can some good ice cream somewhere in this state! If I'm downtown I'm 9/10 times going here. Zest is another amazing restaurant that is a vegan and gluten free restaurant but there isn't ice cream. I'll write a review for them shortly if I haven't already. My lactose-intolerant self was so pleasantly surprised by an ice cream shop that was all dairy free ("anti-dairy," Monkeywrench calls it) that I kept asking them if it was indeed dairy free. I got the banana and chocolate with a whipped topping, which is something else I never get to have. What a wonderful treat, and unlike many plant-based ice creams, it was creamy and melted evenly and well. My ice cream was delicious and didn't taste overly of coconut milk or cream, and the chocolate tasted like *chocolate,* not the fake weird stuff I usually get in plant-based ice creams. You won't miss the dairy- but you might miss out of you don't stop for dessert at Monkeywrench. We came by after searching for dessert near downtown SLC- this was definitely a big hit! I got the earl grey and lemon bar- both were DEVINE! SOOOO sooo good! My husband got a mint milk shake- he was impressed. While we were there in March, they still had COVID operations going (aka, no seating inside, only order at the window). Maybe that might change as we get closer into summer and cases go down? Either way- do stop by! read more

My son and I discovered this ice cream shop while attending a concert at Gallivan Center. It was after 9pm, so most everything else around was closed. We were happy to hop in line with half a dozen other people to get a treat. It moved fast, and we were enjoying dessert not 10 minutes later. Monkeywrench (odd name, but let's go with it), is all vegan-which includes dairy free. Lactose intolerant people celebrate! The ice cream has a good consistency and a huge variety of flavors. Sure, it tastes a little different than traditional ice cream, but it's an acceptable substitute if you are looking for something cool without dairy. The folks who work here are very friendly and are good at their jobs. They had the line moving quickly and efficiently. The inside was closed, but it looks like during non-Covid times, they might allow people in to see the ice creams and eat at a table. However, there were a few tables outside to enjoy. read more

The staff there was very prompt with taking our order and preparing our food. We ended up taking the pies back to our hotel room because the seating on the deck out front had no lighting. Both pies were very good, but overall we preferred the classic apple crumble better than the blueberry lemon. I would definitely go back if we return to Utah, but maybe a little earlier in the day so we could walk around and enjoy our pies.

My first stop was a gelato place but it was crowded with kids and there wasn't a lot of seating, so I passed and continued forth. Sweet Rolled was the next closest option. Here, there was much more seating and the area was incredibly spacious. There were lots of sweet rolled ice cream taco combos to choose from! I ended up getting the Strawberry Shortcake, which had strawberry ice cream mixed with graham crackers and caramel syrup, all rolled into ice cream rolls of course. Then it was sandwiched into a waffle cone shaped into a taco shell, topped with whipped cream, more caramel syrup, a golden oreo cookie, and two strawberry pocky. I didn't think I could finish it all, but it was too delicious not too! If I lived in SLC, I would stop here much more frequently to try all the combos available!

Today I ordered the matcha ube shaved ice and the cherry blossom latte (I had them make mine using coconut milk). I ate the shaved ice at the cafe and took the cherry blossom latte to go because I wanted to drink it later. They put it in a cute bag! Since it was my first visit there I wanted to try the ube and matcha separately, so for the shaved ice I ordered matcha shaved ice on the bottom, followed by the matcha soft serve and then the ube soft serve on top of that. Next time I order the shaved ice, I think I will most likely have the matcha shaved ice with the matcha/ube twist soft serve on top now that I know how each one tastes on their own. I also would do matcha shaved ice with just the ube soft serve on top. Or maybe ube shaved ice with matcha soft serve on top. The matcha was tasty, and like other reviewers have said, you can tell it's good quality matcha. I really enjoyed the ube, it was very yummy to me. I think for my next visit I'm going to try the ube parfait. The cherry blossom latte was good. I got the sweetened version (it was lightly sweetened not super sweet, which I liked). I didn't want something super sweet. It didn't/doesn't have matcha in it. That was fine with me because I wanted to save it for later and didn't want to have caffeine later in the day. I do think it would taste good with matcha in it though. Overall I enjoyed this cafe. I look forward to trying more items. As of right now the other things I want to try are the ube parfait, the shaved ice again, the warabimochi, the hojicha yuzu latte, and the strawberry matcha latte. If you like matcha and/or ube, I would definitely recommend checking out Matcha Café Kyoto. I know I will be again. Support a local business so that they are able to stay around for us to enjoy.

I told her it was my first time but she didn't proceed with any recommendations. I decided to go with the ube matcha with oatmilk. She then asked if I'd like cream with it, I had asked if she suggested it and she responds with "well everyone gets it with creamer". Ok so I agreed to try it out. Why not cause everyone gets it with creamer right? I waited about 10 mins, which isn't bad considering the amount of people. She called my name and had 3 other drinks with her. I asked her if the one she was handing me was with oatmilk , and she says "well that's what you ordered right" I tried it and it wasn't oatmilk. I brought it up to her attention and she kinda just said "sorry" and that was all....unfortunately, I can't say it was the best service. If I decide to come back next time, I'll only get straight matcha instead of a latte just to try again. The matcha didn't have a strong taste to it. It was on the watery side. Perhaps I came on the wrong day a they were off with their orders. Who knows...
