Spilman tried to blame the homeowner for the problem but clearly no reputable roofer knowingly installs shingles so as to cause water damage. Spilman assured us several times both verbally & by texts that he would repair the damaged areas. He delivered the necessary) material which we painted ourselves to save him time & expense. He never did the repair work. After waiting several months for Spilman, we hired another contractor to repair the damaged areas. We posted our complaint with the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Except for several insulting texts to us from Spilman, the complaint went unanswered. Eventually Spilman stated in several texts to us his intent to reimburse us for the cost of repairs if we would then inform BBB of the resolution. We agreed to his extended time frame for payment & sent him the bill, per his request. As the deadline approached, we reminded Spilman of his commitment & again he texted his intent to pay. That deadline has passed & we have not received payment. Once again, Spilman did not stand behind his word, work or warranty. It has been a long & unpleasant experience. We would not recommend Spilman, Inc.

After the work was completed, two major issues appeared: The shingle roof leaked. The copper roof installation was extremely poor and clearly not done by someone experienced with copper roofing. Although Iron Horse Roofing returned to fix the shingle leak, the copper roof was so badly installed that I had to hire another roofing company to replace it entirely. Given the amount paid by insurance, I expected them to subcontract a qualified copper specialist if they lacked the expertise, but that did not happen. I just got the water heater fixed. Now the roof has issues. And since I live in California I'd have to schedule everything thousands of miles away and hope for the best. By the time I got the message it was already 6pm est. so I figured I'd just leave emails and phone messages and hope someone would call me back the next day. Yelp doesn't seem to have too many highly reviewed roofers in Raleigh, so I just called and emailed the top few that I saw. I did get the answering machine on every call except for Olde Raleigh Roofing. Daniel the owner answered even though it was after hours and he was very nice on the phone. He explained what might be the issue and said he'll contact my tenant directly and send some guys over. Once they were over there they would take pictures and email them to me with a price quote. If approved they would start work immediately. I thought great let's do it. I also wanted to get some other quotes and compare them, since I've never had a roof issue, but only 1 guy called me back (one of the larger roofers) and that was 4 days later. And even that guy didn't follow up with my tenant. Long story short, Daniels guys came out, took pictures, Daniel emailed me the pictures and gave me a quote. It sounded fair and came with a warranty, so I approved the work. After the work was finished Daniel sent me another set of pictures of the completed work and emailed me the invoice and warranty for me to sign and send back to him. The roof looked great in the pictures and my tenant was happy. It's already been a few months and no more leaks. I'm very happy. Overall the experience was great. There were some communication problems early on, which may have been due to the long distance and/or tenant. But in the end, everything was great and I'm really happy to now have a trusted roofer on my services list.
