Some of the best food in the valley. Jeremiah Johnson beer is no joke. I love the shift back to the name Blackstar for us locals. My favorite is the Vanilla Porter. I also enjoy most anything else. You can not go wrong on their beer. Solid choices. I would say Blackstar has one of the best if not best burgers in the valley. The pizza sandwiches when they have them are excellent. My kids love the pizza and I do too. The chicken sandwich is also a solid hit. You will go up the line to order or use the QR code at the table to order. Some things come out sooner than others but the runner do a good job of getting what you need. The second floor is a great spot to hang especially in the summer the mid level tap bar is open. The good: Really attentive service, easy ordering. I really love the self-serve carafes for water so you can bring more to your table without having to get up every time someone finishes a glass. Great for kids -- Special thanks for wiping down a readily available high chair on request -- Our kid loves to lick things. The bad: Extremely overpriced. $16 for a regular, ordinary cheeseburger that doesn't even come with fries. I know the economy is in shambles and this is a tourist town with limited options but that's still kind of nuts. There are also surcharges to add lettuce or tomato to kids menu items. Lunch at Blackstar Brewery in Whitefish, MT. Let me just cut to the chase. Lunch was excellent! It's a modern brew pub with a big menu. It has three levels, 1st and 2nd floors with a roof top. You pick a table and order from the bar giving them your table number or or from the table using a QR code. We each ordered a beer. I chose the Hazy Pale Ale and was happy with my choice. Then we ordered a Bavarian Pretzel for the table and it was OUTSTANDING! We each ordered the Cowboy Chicken Sandwich and it was excellent. The sandwich comes with char-grilled chicken breast, southern coleslaw, tangy BBQ sauce, pickled red onion, ob a potato bun. It was excellent. Blackstar Brewery was our first stop in the area. We really enjoyed it. You seat yourself and order from the QR code at the table. There's not too much to comment on as far as service goes with that, but it is quite efficient. It is a sizable restaurant with a 2nd floor and an outside rooftop area. We looked around for seating options outside but determined it was a bit too hot out. We made our way back downstairs and ordered at a table near the bar. We ordered the pretzel and smashburger with fries. The pretzel is ginormous! The smashburger was very solid. I was hungry after a day of travel and devoured it. Weird for your first time, but looking back it wasn't bad at all. Walk in and grab a table and then you basically online order from your table, nobody is going to come ask if you need anything. Drinks came quick but food took ~20+ minutes to come out. Burgers were solid, nothing crazy. Fries were good but salty. We brought our dog and went up to the top floor. I wish there was signage or a host to ease my anxiety about bringing her in (and upstairs) but there was no problems with that at all. I would have loved to sit on the rooftop but it was hot and the evening sun was angled in a way the shade covers didn't help much. We were here pretty much every single night we were in town. I'm slightly ashamed to admit. But this place is great! They have 3 floors so there's something for everyone. I loved our stop at Blackstar Brewery! We had lunch here on our way to Glacier Park. We came for a late lunch and there was plenty of seating. We chose to sit on the first floor but there are two floors and a third floor roof top with outdoor views. You can stay where and either order at the bar or order through a QR code. We shared a pretzel for our starter. The pretzel was soft and great with the cheese. I had a smash burger and really enjoyed it. The burger was juicy and I liked the sauce as well. DO NOT RECOMMEND HORRIBLE SERVICE It is exceptionally rare that I leave poor reviews. Most of the reviews I leave are 4-5 stars. Not today. The location is right downtown Whitefish. It looks great inside and out. That's all the nice things I can say. When we arrived, we wanted to sit on the rooftop terrace. When we got there, nearly all the tables were dirty. There was no staff anywhere, except one that was busy serving drinks one floor below and two more serving drinks on the ground floor. No big deal....I've worked in restaurants before and know they can get busy (even though it was 3pm and not full at all). I found some napkins, got them wet and cleaned off my own table. All orders are done via a QR code. There is no one to ask questions to about the menu. We keyed in our order and I was surprised to see that the app they use asks for a gratuity, for table service (default to 20%), before getting your drinks and food....and without having any servers! Knowing that towns like Whitefish survive from summer tourism (and with a background in restaurant management) I decided to still leave a 20% tip. When our food came, there were no napkins. We asked for utensils and the food runner (not server) was clearly annoyed and gave us a sarcastic remark before getting them. It was obvious that we ruined his day. Forget about getting water served. You have to get it yourself. The food was decent, but not great (the queso dip was a yellow, solidified sludge). If you are going to ask for a tip, with 20% being your default setting, try having some service. Your establishment has NONE. I had to clean my own table, get my own napkins (which I found on a table of people who had left) and track down a glass of water. Getting utensils was an inconvenience to your staff. At no point did anyone check on us to see how our food/experience was. It is clear Blackstar does not care about their customers. They only care about their money. Go to one of the MANY other places in town that actually care about you. read more

Stopped in for dinner and beer after a long day exploring Glacier. Pretty easy to order from your table using the QR code vs. ordering at the bar. We started with a pitcher of scotch ale, which arrived fast and was delicious. I had the cheeseburger and fries, while my wife had the falafel burger. My burger was perfect, while my wife's had almost no sauce and no other toppings. She went back for more sauce but didn't bother with the toppings. I gotta say this was a super solid place! The devil Smashburger was solid although a bit small, but those french fries take the cake because they're so crispy yet super light and airy. Their beer cheese chorizo was legit as a starter, and the chips were amazing, I know that sounds weird, but these are the OG Taqueria style chips. I recall getting in California as a kid that somehow disappeared, possibly due to governor newscum? I'll be honest, I didn't expect to love this place. It is large and just didn't give the vibes I usually am looking for. I was wrong. We started with a flight of beers to see what we wanted to hone in on. One sip of the Belgian Strong Ale and the Imperial Stout and we knew which pints we were ordering. Serious flavor and alcohol with those two so we dove into the food menu as well to balance it out. We ordered the chopped salad (curiously NOT chopped though ) and it was just ok. Weird veggies in there and just lacking in flavor as a result. We then ordered a smash bacon cheeseburger and a side of Brussels sprouts and those both hit the spot. You order on your phone and I ordered first at my table. We had a group of 9. Myself and the other burger ordered never came. My nephew went up to get his son's burger, it's supposed to be delivered to your table. My burger never came and twice I was told "we're very busy". I told them to take my burger off my bill, then maybe 5 minutes later they brought the wrong burger and no fries. That pretzel was the side of a toddler. Crazy huge. Soft and delicious. We ordered several flights of beer. The beer her is very good. the service is set up really well. you grab a table (note the number) and head to the counter to place your order. They draw your beers on the spot and put in your food order and when food is ready, they bring it to your table. if you need to order more of anything, head to the bar again to place another order. Every meal that you eat at a restaurant should be this good. Happy to pay the price that eating out costs these days when it is like that. This place has definitely been more consistent lately. As usual the saison was on point. The beer is always fantastic. The food, while not stellar, has been more consistent and a more reasonable value. The vibe has been more family friendly, too. Today they had a really great singer playing acoustic guitar and the music was heard through ALL the in-house speakers, with no audible house music, so...GOOD JOB, THANK YOU. I still wish they (and all places) would not play their music on speakers facing AWAY from the establishment. How did that become normalized? Anyway, great beer and great views!
