I generally don't like Margaritas, but I went with staff's recommendation and got El Fuego - wow, what a delight! Smokey, spicy, and not sweet. Precisely as I like it. We got a few appetizers for the table to share. Japanese milk bread was a riot. One serving contains three pieces of bread and whipped butter. I probably can make a whole dinner from that margarita and a couple of plates of this bread. Just sublime, you need to try it to believe it. Corn fritters were good, soup dumplings, all very nice. I had short rib special as my main dish and it was superb, melt in your mouth and perfectly seasoned. We shared toffee pudding and butter cake after dinner and they were all tasty. I enjoyed a lovely lunch at Blackbird on a Monday afternoon. The indoor seating area has a modern decor and large bar area, but there are also shaded outdoor tables. The host who seated us was friendly, and our server was attentive. The menu includes a variety of "small plates," larger entrées, and a small selection of sushi rolls. The beverage menu offers an extensive selection of crafted cocktails as well as mocktails, and there is a small curated wine list. My party chose to order the lunch specials that are offered on weekdays. These include a choice of house or cucumber salad, and two small plates or sushi rolls for a fixed price. Both salads were flavorful and good-sized portions. We loved the spicy crab, spicy tuna, and shrimp tempura rolls! I was impressed that they removed the inedible portion of the shrimp tail on the latter, something most restaurants fail to do. But, can we talk about the Detroit-style pizza? Not only was it authentic, but it was absolutely delicious! As someone who grew up in Detroit, Blackbird did a phenomenal job with it, and made me feel nostalgic. I have to admit, I thought it was a bit too pricey for the type of food they offer but it is New Canaan, so I guess that's par for the course. Last night we celebrated my wife's birthday which we noted on the reservation. There was no mention of her birthday, no one wished her a happy birthday nor was there a complimentary anything. The food was mediocre at best. Our waitress, who was friendly and attentive, did not speak English very well and with all the ambient noise we had trouble understanding her. The servers piled all the appetizer dishes on one of our two tables which was way overcrowded already with our drinks, etc. Don't choose this spot to celebrate any momentous occasion. Service was good. We went in the winter and it was a little small because it seems like in the summer it's meant to be an outdoor venue. Had a really great lunch at Blackbird today. Ambiance is really relaxed and modern, service was attentive and friendly. My wife and I tried: fried oysters, baby romaine salad, smash burger and the lemon ricotta pancakes. Everything was really tasty! My favorites were the romaine salad with avocado, bacon, roasted corn and green goddess dressing. It was dressed well and all the individual components were prepared perfectly - sweet corn, crispy thick cut bacon. The smash burger was my other favorite - to me it reminded me of an upscale Big Mac (and I mean that as a sincere compliment). The baconaisse sauce was delicious and the pickled tomatoes were a nice touch. On the whole everything was delicious and we'll definitely be back! read more

Blackbird just opened recently and most word of mouth has been about their cocktails and small plates at dinner. On April 1 they opened for lunch so we decided to go with a group of 8. It was awesome! We each had an entree or salad or sandwich so didn't dip in to the small plates but they sounded good. My BLT panzanella salad was delicious. Great reports from the three that ordered the Smash burger. It comes with the most amazing fries- crispy, salty and hot!!! We split two desserts and all agreed they were worth the calories, especially the sticky toffee pudding. Service was very good, professional and not intrusive. Blackbird is our new favorite in Fairfield County. The staff is amazing, friendly, helpful and attentive. The space is beautiful and chic with a bit of NYC vibe. The bar has plenty of seats and space to either pop in for a drink or enjoy dinner and the bartenders are enjoyable to chat with and engaged. Now onto the food...yummy! The sushi rolls are fantastic!!! The Brussel sprouts, salmon tartare, soup dumplings are must have appetizers. The burger and homemade fries are worthy of fighting over. Blackbird is easily the best new restaurant I've eaten at in years. I live right around the corner from a Jean-Georges restaurant that my family and I have been dining at regularly for decades and Blackbird blows it away. Their crudo is excellent and is adorned and presented in a manner that adds flavor and texture without overpowering the pristine raw fish. I bravely ordered the venison on my first visit which is a dice roll in even the best of restaurants. It was amazing and conjured fond memories of the first, and best, venison steak I've ever eaten back in the 90s at Felidia. The place also runs with precision and efficiency without making you feel rushed. The service was excellent from the busboys to the manager. I dare say that no one who works there has ever uttered the words," it's not my job." I don't write many reviews because I don't want to hurt anyone's business. The service was very good but that is honestly the only positive thing I have to say about this restaurant. The sushi and sashimi were supermarket quality at best and when they say small plates, they're not kidding I have never seen such small portions. The ribeye steak was just awful I'm assuming the meat was midgrade choice, but would not be surprised if it was low grade select in any event it was tough and flavorless. Great Find Across from the Marriott! We were staying at the Marriott across the street but didn't feel like paying Marriott prices for Marriott-quality food. This spot was the perfect alternative! The bartender and all the staff were fantastic, friendly, attentive, and made us feel right at home. It's just a short walk across the street (get your steps in!) and totally worth it. We had the most on the evening of the Kentucky derby. Our bartender was so great, making us derby style cocktails. Celebrating our win with our horse. Then we sat for dinner and I was nervous with our table... thinking we'd be bumped into all night, it was so loud and very busy but to our surprise we really just had the best experience. I was treated to lunch today here by a friend. We were both impressed with the food and the service. The menu is mostly mix and match small plates and that suited us very well. The $24 prix fixe lunch provided an impressive amount of food and lots of selection choices. A very good value for the $$. The only thing that would have improved it would have been to be able to swap out some of the entree/appetizer portion sizes for a dessert, ie, a little less volume in the first courses and then a dessert choice as part of the package. BTW we splurged on a dessert anyway - sticky toffee pudding. Delicious! The room is a little noisy and a little closely spaced, but at lunch that didn't seem to bother anyone.
