Blackberry farm is a pretty decent way to spend a day. It's a working farm, although that does seem to be secondary to the 'play-farm' side of things.
There are a good number of different animals to see, including pigs, goats, rabbits, chickens, ducks, llamas, ferrets among others. They have several different activities on during the day. One that the kids found great fun was the handling of animals. The kids all sit around a table and the staff bring various animals out and they can stroke and handle them. The day that we were there they brought out giant rabbits, tiny baby chicks, a ferret and something else I've forgotten. It made a nice change to just looking at animals in cages and enclosures.
You can buy bags of feed at the shop to feed the goats and llamas, ride in the tractor and go on pony rides! This was a big draw for the smaller children.
Along with the animals there is a large indoor play area but outside there are some great play areas too. A smaller plastic slide and climbing frame arrangement for the smaller children, three large trampolines, a giant inflatable slide and an absolutely fantastic, massive covered bouncy castle. The best thing about it was the Emergency Exit - on the roof!
They have a small café that sells cooked food and snacks along with some delicious homemade cakes, and the pre-requisite ice creams and fizzy pop! There are also some good natural snacks available.
There were a couple of issues I had about this place though. The admission isn't cheap, although there is a fair amount of stuff to do, but the food isn't that cheap either. The girl serving us added our order up wrongly, and it was only through a quick bit of mental maths that I saved us £12. They also have a sign up mentioning the pony rides, we bought one at the same time as admission, although you don't get a ticket or anything. When it comes to actually having the ride they ask you for the money there - it was only because the person who served us originally was also there that we didn't have to pay again.
It all seemed a little disorganised and thrown together for my liking, and some of the staff were a little surly. I would definitely go there again as the kids loved it but I'd have my wits about me next time. read more
