I've been here 3 times since 2019 for my first 2 tattoos and a nose piercing. I personally have a fine line/patchwork style. A lot of customers get shit on for liking them bc they aren't what the artist want to do. So if you like small fine lines, they'll do it but you'll feel like your a burden the entire time. They're not talkative, personable, or welcoming. You walk in, you tell them you want a fine line, you get lectured on fine line, and then you get your tattoo in uncomfortable silence. I know small fine line are not the ideal tattoos, especially for a shop that is huge in traditional styles. But walk ins are still equally as valued as they can become life long costumers. Had i been made to feel even slightly welcomed, i would've gone there for my next several tattoos and piercings. But that's not what happened. I felt like i was simply tolerated for standing by my preferences. I never went while it was busy, never argued on price or size, and i tried the small talk that would eventually fail. So instead of being looked at like the easy in and out money costumer that i am, i felt like i didn't want to come back EVERY TIME. So i stopped and went anywhere else and got better treatment. Also my lines are very thick for fine line, they cost the store minimum of $80 and one went up to $100 due to "placement" it was on my rib. After going to other places, i think that it's decent but not recommendable work. I've gotten better fine line by better artist who were so happy to do it read more

I live in New Orleans and have many people stop me and ask where I get work done - random people in restaurants, the sidewalk, at stores, and I always say, "Daniel at Black Torch in Baton Rouge." Every time, the response is "I see why you drive out there!" His work is impeccable. Clean lines, solid color, defined contrast, and a damn great tattoo artist. My first time going, I was getting a piece to memorialize my late best friend. He took the concept, drew up two images the day of the appointment and I picked one. It was exactly what I wanted and exceeded my expectations. This has been the experience for the other two tattoos I've received since then, and I will continue going back to finish my "piecemeal" sleeve. Lol. There is no mistake of "what is that tattoo?" His prices are not "cheap" because his work and equipment is not cheap. The price has been in direct proportion to the work. Based on Daniel's expectations and the way he runs business, I would trust any artist in that shop. Professionalism - nothing but! This is a business. I am asked when booking an appointment to pay a non-refundable deposit to secure my spot. Usually its a couple hour slot. If I don't show up to it, the artist gets nothing, and is essentially stiffed. A deposit is put down and is non-refundable for a reason. It is an agreement between client and artist. I have always been made aware of the agreement by Black Torch Tattoo. If I am unable to fully commit, I should not be putting deposits down. That is a personal responsibility we have as clients when booking appointments. The point of choosing a specific artist is because I admire their work and creativity. It's a collaboration. I went in Black Torch and got my second piercing done and it was done awesomely. Courtney did my piercing by the way. I walked in and got greeted with a warm smile and I was a walk in. She said she was able to do it, but she warned me about some things I couldn't do while it healed, which was very helpful. I signed the paper to get my second piercing and she went to the back to set up. The atmosphere was very clean and looked like it had so many tattoo options! When she was ready, she brought me to the back and double checked if I was still okay with it and and began the process. I picked out a beautiful earring and she prepped my ears with some wipe that gets all the germs off and we began. She took me through the process of when she was piercing my ears and when to take in a breathe and to breath out. She was done pretty quickly and it looks amazing. After she was done she gave me a little gift bag of saline spray to clean your ears with. It came with instructions on how to clean it and procedures to take. It is a little pricey, but it's so worth it. I would totally recommend Black Torch for piercings at least, and would recommend Courtney, she did a phenomenal job! read more

Went here to get my first Tattoo. They did a great job. The shop was very nice. I paid $150 for a 1.5 inch all black tattoo of a simple symbol on my arm that took less than 20 minutes to do. I feel like that was probably way too much. I was just ready to get it done. Oh well, live and learn. My next one is going to be way bigger and way more detail. I will be more informed on that one. Don't mind paying for what it's really worth. Just can't shake the feeling I was overcharged. read more

I think this place is really overrated and overpriced and not worth your time or attention. A few artist and receptionist I have interacted with here have been rude and slightly pretentious? "Slightly" is being nice. I've been disrespected and disregarded. As well as robbed of my money and ghosted by the owner. I had an appointment scheduled with the owner, Daniel Mesen, and Alex Campbell. It was really hard to coordinate with Alex Campbell on what I wanted. He doesn't work well with concepts nor the idea of having to re-draw designs. He just has a very problematic energy to work with, especially via email. He doesn't do well collaborating nor does he want to. He was asking me to pay 500 per piece but was frustrated when there was a possibility he would have to re-draw the work to make sure it was exactly what I wanted? He actually said I don't want to have to re-draw the piece over and over which I understand but yeah very hard to collaborate, especially via email. I also don't know what gave him the impression I was going to ask he re-draw it over and over? He should have in person consultations for sure. It's your job to work with the client and when asking that much from your customers you would think it wouldn't be such a negative and difficult interaction. He ended up offering to give my deposit back after telling me I didn't seem like I knew what I wanted.... The way it was handled really rubbed me the wrong way and he basically made me feel unwanted and I felt the same way with Daniel. I take tattooing seriously and I love to go to artist that actually know and love what they're doing and like the idea of collaborating and he actually told me it seemed like I didn't really know what I wanted because I gave him the freedom of expressing himself with just a concept and a budget? Also, preached to me that it's on my body forever and to take it seriously? I didn't ask for the lecture. Just wanted the tattoo because he has his own style and I wanted to honor that and work with a budget.... Not that my budget was really respected. He basically wanted me to invest more money but he didn't want to invest more time? That was really frustrating and weird. Again, very pretentious and undermining attitude via email. If you're like me you won't enjoy an interaction with this type of tattoo artist. Now, on to Daniel. My interaction with Daniel was just as frustrating and he basically robbed me of my money. Daniel is super booked up because a lot of people like his work. I was super excited to get a piece done by him, after the fail with Alex. I had to wait a few months and then I got COVID-19. Now, I let him know before my appointment that I just found out my results and couldn't make it because I would still be in the quarantine phase and wanted to be safe. I assumed he would be a little more gracious because I didn't have to tell him I had COVID for the safety of himself and his business. He didn't seem grateful about that and told me his next opening was in a few more months... He also said this was my last rescheduling opportunity. He only gives 1. I get it's a business and all but I guess it just doesn't make sense to me that by me looking out for his business and his safety I would be disregarded and unappreciated? I also am moving soon and said I don't know if that date really works and he said he doesn't give deposits back so... I don't know. So I finally just accepted it and worked with it. AND TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE - I emailed him a few days before my RESCHEDULED appointment to see what the plan was because I didn't receive any drawings etc. He told me he does it the day of and I accepted that. The MAJOR problem is he scheduled me for the wrong time than what we agreed on. I corrected him via email and asked if that was an accident or what and he just decided not to email me back. Decided to ghost. ABOUT OUR CONFIRMED APPOINTMENT THAT I PUT A 100 DOLLAR DEPOSIT DOWN FOR THAT HE TOLD ME I WOULDN'T BE GETTING BACK. DO NOT RECOMMEND. MY TIME WAS WASTED AND SO WAS MY MONEY. I actually got robbed and ghosted. And I get it, life happens. I wasn't judging the mistake. The problem is the lack of respect this studio radiates. SUPER DISAPPOINTING. Another red flag: One of my friends got a line tattooed down their neck and it cost 300+ dollars? I've only had one good interaction with someone that works here and it was the guy that used to do the piercings a few years ago. Don't remember his name. Not sure if he still works there but yeah I would recommend Feral Studios, Walk In Warrior, or Leviathan before this place any day. I've personally known Daniel and Alex for over 10 years and they are both extremely professional and amazing at what they do. I happened to be in Baton Rouge in July and was lucky enough to be able to get an appointment with Alex. He was very responsive, worked with me on design since I had no idea what I wanted - I literally told him "I either want a shrimp or a crawfish" - and after sending him a few references he came up with a great idea and I am thrilled with my shrimp tattoo! When I showed up to the shop Alex was ready right at my appointment time, the shop was clean and sterile, and everyone was friendly. It was one of the best tattooing experiences I have had to date. I am looking forward to getting something on the books with Daniel in the future! I recommend Black Torch to all of my Louisiana friends and even folks traveling from out of state. Put a hoop in even though it takes longer to heal and couldn't put the stud in for my friend so had to put in the hoop for her... This review is strictly for piercings. I came in to get my belly button pierced ($40). No appointment, but no wait either. All my friends recommended Jake, so he pierced it for me. Reviews were right. He is VERY knowledgable on piercings and super friendly, which was great. Everything was super clean and sterile. I got to ask him so many questions about the piercing I was getting and even previous ones that I had. He also switched out some old jewelry for me with the right sizes, since my barbells were too long. The piercing was quick, although one complaint I have is that mine is slightly crooked :( and this is a couple months later, after swelling has gone down.
