Not a welcoming or supportive environment for kids. One of the employees in particular is rude and demeaning. Do not recommend.

With so many people effected by the pandemic, the state of the world, general health, the fires, the economy and wellness as well as the job market I've known/know many people who benefit from organizations like LAFH - who seem to be the most thorough, compassionate and active in Los Angeles. I've been lucky enough to help with on site gardening #greenthumb, homeless connect days, donation kits and even fundraising. I've connected with several staff, employees, security, affiliates and those seeking services and toured the facilities at their home base/main location in North Hollywood on Lankershim Blvd. I learn something new every week, and look for ways to be involved as well as encourage others to be involved. It is 103 degrees. - Too much staff standing around and talking, not enough actual help. - I hate to leave a 1 star review but they get away with what they do because the people that utilize the facility don't want to risk being kicked out or face more discrimination from the employees. - I am leaving 3 stars because what they do is important but there needs to be better oversight and some sort of training on how to DE-ESCALATE situations (specifically the woman photographed that literally chased down my husband saying "do we have a problem)?" - Also, training in FEDERAL ADA Law and MEDICAL TRAINING for how to deal with mental illness & disability for staff to de ecalate and assist in situations should be MANDATORY at facilities like these. - Being scolded like a child or spoken to like a dog is unacceptable. - Final note, a social worker calling a trangender woman a HE, telling security to "Help HIM and get HIS things" is not okay; some sensitivity training could go a long way at this location.

There were people coughing, talking to themselves wandering through every aisle, which made me feel uneasy and constantly looking over my shoulder. I originally came to exchange an item from a different location because I thought this store might have a better selection, but that wasn't the case. There is also what looks like a homeless encampment along the street side of the store. Inside, there were people hanging out at the dining tables (for sale), which made it hard for actual shoppers to move around. I even saw at least two people stuffing items into duffle bags. The exchange process was quick and easy, and the staff handled that part well. However, the store really needs some type of security at the door to better manage who comes in and prevent the issues happening inside.

They don't give you an 8 hour window where you are required to attend - the food collected goes to local food organizations to feed the homeless throughout LA - it's a great excuse to get outdoors & get some exercise! Motivation I love the entire concept of this organization. It is challenging for the impoverished to get access to fresh fruit and produce. A low income man in the Midwest a few months ago went to the hospital and was diagnosed with Scurvy! Yes, like the pirates illness. Why? He was only eating cheap, frozen meals 3x a day for the past 18 mos., no fruit or produce, and was severely vitamin C deficient! MDs diagnosis, not mine. Access to healthy fruits and veggies is critical to health but can be challenging given the expense. In comes hero organization Food Forward! They pair up with local home owners who have excess fruit or veggies. They have volunteers come out to "pick" their excess fruit. The fruit is then taken to local food banks in the area and distributed outward. How cool is that? I spent 1.5 hrs with them picking grapefruit in Woodland Hills. It was such a fun way to volunteer my time but manageable enough to fit into my schedule. I loved it and look forward to volunteer with this terrific organization again in the future.
