I'm new to the area and was in dire need of some grey coverage. I scoured online reviews and landed on Black the Salon because it was one of the few places that I found affordable for what I needed -- literally just needed grey coverage around my temples and a few random strands in my part. I was very happy to be able to book on NYE just in time to be refreshed for the new year. I booked grey coverage + bang trim. Upon arrival, I was greeted by Melissa who was coloring another client's hair and shortly after, I met Jeph, the owner. Jeph asked me a bit about myself and what I needed done. He totally understood that I wasn't in a (financial) place for a full retouch of my highlights and in fact said that I probably could go a little longer without a full touchup and haircut which I really appreciated! What I loved about the salon was that we had easy-going conversation for a bit and then Jeph let me chill out a bit to surf on my phone -- love the ease of appointments like this. Melissa gave me the shampoo of my dreams with an amazing mini scalp massage. She then went on to blow dry me and gave me beach curls and Jeph dusted off my bangs for a refreshed look. I thought the duo tag-teamed my services well and made sure there weren't any unnecessary delays. Getting my greys colored really brightened my whole look! Very simple, scheduled an appointment with Jeph for a beard trim, I arrive 5 minutes ahead of time, they tell me he's gonna be a little late, then 15 minutes after my appointment someone else says that they're gonna be "taking care of me", but Jeph is nowhere to be found. I booked the appointment specifically with Jeph for a reason, so thank you but no thank you. The idea of appointments is to preserve people's time, and if Black Salon generally or Jeph specifically don't respect that, then I would recommend against going to this place, regardless of how good it is or not. read more

Very unprofessional staff don't recommend this place, I booked an appointment a month ago for a curly hair cut,I got there like an hour before just to check if they could maybe do it a bit earlier. when I got there the lo location was closed nobody there, I thought maybe they'll come back later by the time of my appointment because I confirmed the appointment and guess what they Never Show Up, so I went to hang out nearby while waiting then I got back by the time I scheduled the appointment I waited in front of the door for over 15 minutes after my schedule hour I called then many times and sent them some texts without an answer and like 3 days later they texted me asking if want it to reschedule of course I did not who want to deal with irresponsable unprofessional people I wish I could give 0 star to this people deserve it very Irresponsable, very unprofessional read more

I previously had highlights put in at a different salon. I wasn't too happy with them so I went home immediately and used a Clairol kit to try to remedy the situation. Unfortunately, my hair turned pink. Then I made one last attempt to fix the mess by using Just For Men, which turned it even more red. Black the Salon to the rescue. I went to see Jeph, the owner, at the Corktown location. He understands color and has a ton of experience with it. He knew exactly what to do with my carrot top. First he gave me a great haircut, eliminating some of my problem right away. Then, he put his color skills to work to get me that ash blonde with highlights, that I was originally going for. It turned out perfectly. No pink/red hue was to be found, and it looked very natural and stylish. I couldn't be happier with my decision to go to Black the Salon. I will definitely return to see Jeph for my next color and cut. The salon is ultra cool and comfortable too. They offer pretty much anything you want to drink too when you arrive, which is an added bonus. read more

My stylist was working at the new Corktown location on the day I wanted my services, so I decided to make my appointment there so I could check it out. Parking wasn't an issue for me, but I could see it being an issue at certain times of the day or week, given that it's nestled in with more than a handful of Detroit's gems. Per usual, I was happy with the services received. Erica is great at cuts, colors, and brows. The exposed brick, hanging dryers, and pictures of vintage hair items is a nice touch. So, why 4 stars instead of 5? My hair services were a bit more expensive at the Detroit location that the Royal Oak location. No worries, I'll just keep on keeping on in R.O. Less expensive, closer, and the same amazing service. read more

The team at Black the Salon is on point. Being in from Chicago and needing a haircut before I went to visit some clients I was a bit nervous to try a salon. The second you walk in the door they offer you a beverage. The atmosphere itself is exposed brick with hardwood floors. The details in the decor translate to the details you are looking for in a haircut. Although I was going for more of a corporate look they had people getting some way more funky stuff with crazy colors. As a guy, I appreciated the wash before and after the cut. So very happy with my experience with Black the Salon! From the first time that i called and spoke with Mary they made me feel comfortable, she was so helpful and accommodating. Steph J. was awesome and so was everyone else. Aside from the end result being amazing, Steph listened to me and understood what i was wanting and knew and understood my curly hair. I'm usually nervous when i get my haircut but she gained my trust quickly and didn't steer me wrong. They are clearly very close and friendly with each other, which translates with how they treat their clients, which is very important to me. Everyone pitches in and helps each other. How do u do 0 stars in Yelp? I don't know cuz I never wrote a negative review before. Here we go. Their staff is unprofessional. They scheduled an appointment with me and when I got there they said they "don't have enough product." They didn't apologize. They didn't offer an acceptable resolution. Mind you this is the second time they cancelled an appointment on me because of staff incompetency. Also, can you believe the girl suggested she could use the product she does have only on "my problem areas"? Yeah, sure, lemme get a half of a keratin treatment only on the right side of my head.
