I am a local and have been here several times. The food is good enough and so are the ice cream sundaes. This issue is service. It's always service. We went on the waitlist and were told 15 minutes. At the 50 minute mark we finally got seated...and so did the 6 tables that came in after us. For that entire 50 minutes they had at least 4 open tables that they wouldn't seat. They had one waitress and she started taking orders with the shortest wait table, at which point, three of the tables got up and walked out. This spot was really hyped up by friends for being high quality burgers, sides, and incredible shakes but sad to say I thought the food was extremely mediocre. My friend and I were looking for dinner after an evening of cocktails and this was nearby with no wait to sit at the bar on a Thursday night around 7. (There was a wait for a table.) My friend got the wagyu burger and I opted for chicken tenders and fries. We both got beers with that (will say - they have a decent selection of local brews on tap for okay prices.) It's downtown, so I expect for everything to be overpriced, but the quality felt like airport kiosk rather than a restaurant really known for this type of food. The fries portion is as very generous, but execution is as below average: not very crispy, felt like just made from a frozen bag. The breading on the fried chicken was a bit flavorless and it didn't have enough crunch to me. The dipping sauces were good but a little sweet for the bbq option. My friend liked the wagyu burger, but noted it didn't feel particularly special or mind blowing in a town with a lot of burgers. We were very hungry when we arrived, so being able to get food quickly with kind service, was a win, but wouldn't want to come back and/ or consciously make a decision to have this food again, especially at such high prices. After a long and exhausting walk sightseeing on Broadway St. I turned a street corner and stumbled upon Black Tap Craft Burgers and Beer, I am glad I did. It was a pleasantly quiet inside, exactly what I was looking for. I sat at the bar and I was immediately pleased to see that there are power outlets available all along the bar. Charging my phone while sipping on a few drinks to whine down after a busy day, was needed. Chase was the bartender and he was not only attentive but helpful and informative. By request, he was able to suggests some places in town to visit and did so all without neglecting the needs of his bar. I had the wings and they were very good, they have some blue cheese sauce of some sort. I will definitely visit again for the customer service and try out more of the items on their menu. read more

I went to Black Tap Nashville for the 1st time recently and it was my 1st visit to any Black Tap in general. I used to live in NYC when Black Tap was in its prime a few years ago when it was all over social media, but I never went. So maybe it's my fault that my expectations were high at a different time in Black Tap's life cycle, but I went in expecting something premium and that's not what I left feeling that I got. My opinion of Black Tap after trying it is that it's like a luxury clothing brand that's past its peak like Coach or something. Once upon a time it was a big deal, but now it's on the shelves at TJ Maxx. And when brands get to that stage in their life cycle, I think they realize it. I didn't think anything was repulsively bad, but nothing was great either. We ordered a peaches and cream sundae that was $23. There were some quality issues. The crushed up cone pieces on it were stale and the peaches weren't the freshest peaches you'll ever taste, but even those weren't the only issues. The selling point is that the sundae is "huge." It's big, yes, at a glance, if you compare it visually to the presentation of ice cream you'd get at an ice cream shop, but it's not THAT big when you really break it down. It seems allegedly, allegedly, allegedly, that Black Tap uses a strategy that many chain restaurants and restaurants owned by institutions use, which is creative plating and presentation that make the item seem bigger than it actually is. The peaches and cream sundae is seemingly a giant concoction, but in reality it has a lot to do with the shape of the vessel. It comes in a glass that's sort of shaped like a margarita glass, so the center is pretty narrow all the way down. That's where the actual ice cream is, and by ice cream I mean three very, very standard hand scoops of ice cream. The rim of the glass is the shape of a flower. The outside of the rim is coated with the toppings like Black Tap is known for and the "petals" of the flower are filled in with whipped cream and two quarters of a waffle are stuffed in there. If you deconstructed this sundae and plated it in a regular bowl, you'd feel that it would more appropriately be worth $13 to $15 based on the actual amount of food, but it was $23. Two of us took it down without an issue and we aren't big people or big eaters. The amount of food is correct, the price correlated to what you're actually getting isn't. And that's part of the issue with this place. If a couple goes to Black Tap, orders two burger and two drinks and a dessert, after tax and tip, they're in over $100. That's a tough place to be in as a burger joint, especially these days. There are plenty of quality burger spots that fill the space between fast food and premium burger joints that offer a quality of food at least as good for a fraction of the price. In my opinion Culvers, Ground, and Mooyah are far ahead of Black Tap just on quality of food alone and you'd barely crack $35 at those places for the same meal that I mentioned above. Black Tap's calling card is a supposed premium experience, but when you're in there, it's not screaming premium. The appearance isn't dirty or in disarray or anything but you just get the sense that it isn't as clean as even some fast casual spots past the surface. The interior is pretty much like a diner or a chain restaurant with buckets of Cholula and mustard on the tables but with darker paint so it may give you a first impression that it's edgier. But all of that quickly fades and you realize your bill will be premium but this isn't a premium place. One thing that I did get that was a great value was the burger week burger that was $8. Nice burger, I have no complaints about it really. But I asked for one small change and it wasn't able to be done. I wanted the sauce on the burger to be on the side instead of on the burger and they wouldn't do it. I wasn't asking for anything to be added or substituted on the burger. I wasn't even asking for anything to be removed from the burger really either because extra sauce already comes on the side anyway. Is that premium? We just came for the sundae because we're fans of peach and just impulsively ordered the burger too since it was a good deal. After the meal was done I saw maybe a silver lining because I got to experience Black Tap in preview mode. In the past I was planning to go in and have a regular meal with a couple of burgers, a few drinks and a milkshake, and now just by chance, because this peach sundae brought me in during burger week, I got to have a preview for a fraction of the cost, and I realized that I probably wouldn't have found the value in a full meal. In today's world, you leave your house and just accept the fact that whatever you're buying, you probably aren't getting your money's worth. But you have to at least be able to leave an establishment with some sort of positive feeling in order to be a regular customer and for me that wasn't the experience here unfortunately. read more

The music sits at "we like our eardrums," so you can actually hear your friends, your server, and your own good life choices. Burger: Very tasty and I wouldn't mind if they had a free refill policy. Sweet Potato Fries: Outrageously good. Nice edges and soft centers. Guard your plate. Shakes: Dessert with a straw--rich enough to skip the dessert menu entirely. Only downside: The straw was the diameter of a garden hose but made of paper--less effective than Congress on a good day. Soundtrack (Human Edition): Conversation-friendly. Unlike most places nearby, they're not competing with BNA for noise complaints. Service: Adam was fantastic--attentive, friendly, and perfectly timed. A pro's pro. They were freshly made and super tasty. I also ordered a delicious Espresso Cookie milkshake because it looked great and I wasn't in the mood for a beer. I came to the restaurant expecting to try one of their burgers, but opted to share the slightly healthier Cali Chicken Sandwich with my wife instead. It was a large grilled chicken breast with Swiss cheese, avocado, and pickled onions on a large, fresh bun. A relatively new addition to the downtown Nashville food scene, Black Tap sits on the corner of 3rd and Commerce, just a block off of Broadway...and what you don't get in honky tonk here, you get in tasty burgers and giant shakes! We had been eyeing Black Tap for a few months, but given its proximity to downtown, we usually stay away, however on a recent Thursday evening after visiting a nearby Christmas Bar, we decided a burger sounded great and made our way to Black Tap, and luckily for us they were not that busy, so we got quick service and a choice of seating. We slid in a booth near the window and soon after, Isabella, our waitress came by. Isabella (I believe that was her name, I hope so!), was full of energy, friendly, knowledgeable and an all around joy to have as our server! We took a couple of Isabella's recommendations including the Fried Mozz and Tomato dipping sauce, and we made sure to get the black garlic peppercorn aioli as a dip for our fries. Both were solid recommendations that we were not mad about getting! For dinner we got an order of chicken tenders, which were served with a trio of sauces. The house made ranch was my personal fav of the three. I went with a burger, because I couldn't visit this spot and NOT have a burger. The Mexico City burger sounded solid for me, especially with the pepperjack cheese and chipotle mayo! They did happen to leave off the onion ring, but I didn't notice until I had ate half of it, so no major loss. The burger was cooked well and a solid burger. They do have a full bar, and a decent list of house cocktails, however we went with a few classic cocktails to wash it all down. Unfortunately due to the mozz, fries and burgers we had no room for dessert, which made us sad, but we did not want to be wildly miserable on the streets of Nashville, so we will have to hit Black Tap back up for a shake soon.
