This place is awesome! They're a metal themed brewery and the sign on the jukebox reinforces that. There's a wide variety of beers and they also have an actual liquor license so you can get mixed drinks as well. Their cocktails are huge too. The girls in our group (admittedly lightweights) got pretty buzzed after one of their "Two in the pinks" which is a vodka lemonade. To top it off, it was only $6! I think that's the cheapest vodka lemonade (double tall) I've ever bought in my life. We ended up at this place kind of by accident when we were trying to visit another brewery in this area that was closed. We tried this place instead. I'll start with the positives. It is definitely a death metal bar, but not in a way that makes anyone uncomfortable. There were a variety of people there, young and old, and they were playing metal music, but it was quiet. Now for the bad: The ambiance overall is one of those breweries that's like a high school gym someone moved a few tables and a bar into. The service was basically non-existant, we ordered at the bar, brought our own beer back to the table. Someone checked on us once, but left before we could ask to tab out. The flight was just in 4 oz. glasses placed on a tray, there was no way to easily ID which beer was which. We tried about 7 of their beers, I don't remember the names of all of them, but they were all disappointing. The fruit flavored beers were muddled, no clear flavor profile, and did not taste like the fruit they were supposed to be made with. The pumpkin beer was more of a smoky, meaty flavor, with no pumpkin or spice flavor. What was listed as a house blonde ale was so hoppy it read more like an IPA. The beers had bitter aftertastes and they lacked carbonation. They didn't seem like they were chilled enough. It was probably the worst beer I've had in Denver, like a home brew project gone wrong. Beers: the lighter, more drinkable ones are kind of boring, but drinkable. The higher abv ones are pretty good. They have a huge variety, so they have something for everyone, just about. Pizza: they advertise it as "New Haven style". It is 100% not anywhere close to New Haven style. Like, not even a little bit. It is good though. Got the Corpsepaint and the Hell Awaits. Both were very tasty. The crust, while not New Haven style in the slightest, was definitely tasty and cooked to perfection. Waitstaff: attentive, friendly, and informative. There ya go! The music: I put a bunch of metal on the jukebox but the volume was really really low. We were there pretty much at noon though so YMMV at night. Overall would def return. read more

The beer here is also excellent, I've never had a bad experience and my hard or metal days are far behind me, don't let the music scare you away, they keep it toned down a bit during the weekdays. This is one of the best breweries I've ever visited. When I went, it had a very laidback feel to it (around 3pm on a Saturday). The beer selection is great; I tried three different beers. I love that they have liquor. The Hot Beef Injection sounds crazy but is worth the shot (pun intended). I tried the Hot Artichoke Dip - it's a brilliant spin on the traditional spinach artichoke dip; instead of spinach, they serve up jalapeños in place of it. What makes it even better is that it's served in a bread bowl and it's cooked perfectly. Unfortunately, I was too full to try anything after that, but I would gladly go back and order that damn dip again. If you want to check it out, but aren't into live music because you're old and boring, go during the lunch hour. They have some amazing specials and you can still carry a conversation while you're eating. If I remember correctly, I got two slices of pizza and a pint for about $10. Great deal! The jukebox has a note on it that says "All non-metal songs will be skipped." That alone should show you how dedicated this place is to metal music and aesthetics. But it's also the amusing names they give to their beers that adds to the experience. You might feel underdressed if you're not all in black. One of my all-time favorite pizzas is made here: the Black Sky. It's got jalapeños and cream cheese and really hits the spot. Add the fact that this place is across the street from one of my favorite bars and you've got a winning combination for a bar crawl. This isn't some brewery in a town full of breweries. Yes, the beer is excellent and these guys are the master of their craft. Yes, the food is delicious and priced appropriately. However, this isn't what this establishment represents to me - and I'll freely express the opinion of the "Regular Crowd" - Black Sky Brewery is a place where people from differing perspective and backgrounds can come together in a spirit of trust and legitimacy. Pizza is amazing and bartender is welcoming and nice. Metal music, which if your jam is great. If not, you can still get a sense of the strong community they create. Black Sky is hosting an orphan potluck on thanksgiving where anyone can bring a dish. Little things like that along with an awesome piece of pizza make you glad that places like Black Sly exist. I was looking forward to this brewery, usually folks in the metal community - despite outward appearances - are friendly, passionate (in a really good way), and good times are had by all. This was a little different. The pizza was very bland, specifically the clams casino. Small amount of clams and bacon on dry crust. The regular pizza was okay, probably would have been better if I was a few beers deep. Which brings me to the beer, which was average. That tends to happen when you brew that many different beers. Finally, the staff could care less we were there, and some Bret Michaels-type kept shrieking that the music wasn't metal enough. So overall, not worth the visit. There are other metal watering holes in the city and definitely much better beer and pizza to be found, so I'd say skip it. However, if you are at a beer fest or event and they are out there serving, give the Minerva a try. read more

After DAYS of traveling and drinking around Colorado, we finally made it back to Denver and over to Black Sky. I hate to admit this, but at this point in our beercation I was almost sick of drinking. No worries though...as soon as I walked in and heard the metal music blasting, saw the sick skull and metal decor, and tasted my first sip of the sweet nectar they offered, I was magically up for more drinking. I don't know what it is about Colorado but almost every brewery we went to on our trip was playing Bluegrass, College Indie Rock, or whatever else the hipsters are listening to these days. This was the first brewery I walked into where my ears weren't bleeding from the twang of banjos plucking. To each his own, though. The beers were all pretty good...I ended up just getting a sissy 10 oz.'er or something and my man sampled a few tasters. The bartender also poured us a few freebie samples while we talked so we could try some other styles as well. They all had really nice aromas and good flavor. I didn't have anything I wouldn't drink a full pint of. Bottom line is this: Get your butt over here and give them a try. And if you don't like metal, bring some earplugs and quit 'yer bitching. If I can listen to Bluegrass to drink some decent beers, you can listen to metal for an hour or two. Trust me, it doesn't kill you. read more

I really like what they've got going on here. New to the Sante Fe Arts District locale, it seems to be impressing its neighbors. On a Saturday night, we wandered in for shelter and beer after trekking in the snow and were pleasantly surprised - not only by the prompt and excellent service, the the adventurous beers, as well. Out the five, very unique tasters available in their standard flight, I enjoyed the Pedal To The Metal most. Not only for it's play on words (it's a flower/fragrant forward tasting beer, but also a metal inspired brew pub) but it's differently flavor, as well. I am not usually into the flower-tasting anything. But they've mastered the subtlety of the pedal flavor combined with a pretty high ABV. Arguably this is Denver's second heavy metal themed brewery. Some say that TRVE is also in this theme. Personally I think Black Sky is more tried and true to this since there are lots of black t-shirts hung on the wall and art that only a metalhead would love! It would not be complete if they did not have loud music and the singer giving out a resounding death growl. I am passed my days as a metalhead, if I could ever had considered myself one. I think I consider myself as an aging industrialhead but who really is keeping track? I appreciate this place all the same. Aside from the atmosphere the beer is really what drove me to give this place a five star rating. They have tasty, interesting and innovative beers, that much is for certain. They had a couple of stouts on hand which caught my eye. They had a Blackberry Stout that caught my attention but what really got me was their Mint Pistachio Stout. Oh, my goodness was this stout good! It was a kind of flavor and variety I have not come across before and my constant, wandering and always continuing odyssey to seek out craft beers that are memorable and delicious! Two stars. We talked to a friendly bartender. Which bumped this review to two stars instead of one. The metal theme isn't my style.. But I was impressed by the size of the brewery. A lot of room to mingle and sit down. Okay, enough small talk. The beer.... Tried the mint stout, an IPA, and a couple of wheat beers. By far he worst beers I've ever tasted at a local brewery in Denver. The mint stout tasted like black licorice/medicine... Hard to finish even a 10oz glass. The IPA was even worse... Tasted like dirty dish water.. Was so bitter it was impossible to enjoy. The wheat beers didn't taste normal and were too tart/sour. I wouldn't recommend this place.. Not worth the money spent. I give it one star for the food and one for the beer, which are both quite good. Unfortunately, the place takes itself too seriously when it comes to adhering to the heavy metal theme. Example: Black Sky was mostly deserted last Saturday night except for my group of about 8 and a small group of 40-somethings that did not appear to be serious metal fans. After a few rounds of beer and pizza, we grew tired of the ad nauseam screaming of contemporary metal and put 5 bucks in the jukebox. If the place had been crowded, or we'd gotten the impression that anyone there had been particularly enjoying the default music, we never would have used the jukebox. Also, while our selections weren't exactly heavy metal, we made an effort to select songs that could be considered dark and/or heavy but less contemporary. Citing "customer complaints", the bartender skipped several of the tracks we paid for, openly criticized our choices and stopped by our table to theatrically give us a few quarters in return for what we'd played. We asked him, "Why the hell do you have a jukebox?" and he replied with something about how management had screwed up and they weren't allowed to customize the available list. He basically went out of his way to make us feel unwelcome. I get that Black Sky Brewery is trying to establish a brand and a particular atmosphere, but alienating people that use their jukebox seems like the wrong way to go about it. We left with a bad taste in our mouths and I doubt we'll return--which is a shame since we all live in the neighborhood and its location would make it a perfect local hangout. read more

I have been two Black Sky 2 times now. I live in the Baker neighborhood and anxiously awaited this place to open. I went on opening day and there was a solid group of people there. However, they did not have any one their own beers on tap. Not a problem since it was the first day and I'm sure they just wanted to be open asap. I went back this past Friday night and was very disappointed. They only had 2 of their beers on tap, and one was already gone. I ordered a pizza as well which has a thick coating of flour on the bottom which overpowered everything else. I am most disappointed in the service. After sitting down, a waitress did promptly take our drink and food order, but we never saw here or another server again over 45 minutes. I had to go to the bar and ask for our tab. When brought to our table, no one came to collect so again I had to go wait in line and take it to the bar. The bright point in this bar is that they serve other brewery's beers. When they have more of their own on tap there will be a nice diversity to choose from. I'm still eager to try one of their beers, but if I have awful service again then that will be the end of me trying them out. read more

As a weed smoking hippie I find no problem with them being a death metal bar but maybe that's just because I'm not a judgmental piece of shit that subtracts stars from a place based on the theme of their choosing... I mean it's their place right. Their beers are fantastic and have lots of cool features. Such as using local organic fresh hops to hop the Demonseed. Or how about making an über delicious light beer with rose petals in it that even dudes can feel comfy in their manhood while drinking. I'll agree that they don't have a hundred beers on tap like some shitty chains in America but I find the high quality more then makes up for it. Every beer rocks! Having worked in multiple breweries and brewpubs I have yet to find many that have a shit ton of their own beers on tap... Especially from the get go. For instance, I believe Vine street pub only started out with 3 of their own beers on tap out of 21 taps on a wall. Maybe I'm crazy but its hard for me take away stars from a place based on not having 60 of their own beers on tap, especially with such creative and fantastic tasting beers. The food here is awesome as well. One of a few places in town that actually uses San Marzanos in their sauce and doesn't over spice with dry herbs. Nice crust as well. Being from Chicago, I have no idea what New Haven style even means but I do know it belongs in my face going down the fat kid hole. Now maybe I don't know pizza... And now maybe you went full retard for even entertaining the idea. Staff wise I think these guys rock. Soo much potential here - I can't wait to see what comes next! The whole vibe of this place is killer - but in the good way. Love the metal, love the art, love the open space and ample seating. It can only get better from here. I really enjoyed the Black Light beer which was really smooth. The house IPA was decent but I'm not big on the hoppitty hops so decent is good. I want to try the Percephone wheat beer next time I come...it sure sounds delish. Something unique about this place is that they serve beer from other breweries such as Dry Dock and Renegade. Talk about a one stop shop for all your local beer needs! Also, they serve food which is a good thing for a long day of brewery hopping. I look forward to trying out the grub. Think more brewpub than brewery for Black Sky. Yes they make their own beer but they also have other breweries beers and food. So that's where the brewpub aspect comes in. The beer selection includes mostly CO breweries with a few out of state ones mixed in. I'm sure the mix will change as they make more of their own beer. Good selection non the less. I've stopped in a few times and really liked the pizza. I'm not sure if it's the idea of being able to be in a "brewery" in Colorado and order food ... or if the food is really that good. I have an extremely unhealthy relationship with a man named Black Sky... Finding myself at least once a week, I somehow still always have a new beer to try! They have about 25 on tap, vastly ranging in brewing styles at all times. My faves as of lately have been the Fall From Grace Abbey and the Petal to the Metal. Did I mention they boast beer, metal, and....PIZZA?! In house mf! Their whole menu is bomb diggity. And for my fellow Golden Girls fans..they have a different flavor, fresh cheesecake weekly...weeeeeekly. The flavors are always perfect. Ugh. To be there now, wait...I am! I was not blown away by Black Sky. Perhaps if I hadn't already been to TRVE, a metal brewery would seem like a great idea. However, if you're going to be the second brewery in the neighborhood to capitalize on such a theme, you better make sure you're doing a great job-- and right now, I think Black Sky is doing an average job. As far as the overall ambiance goes,there's a spacious layout with a bar and probably 10-15 small tables for dining. There is art up on the walls, and it's well lit. They kept the music at a background level, at least while I was there, and had two televisions by the bar. Nice space, did not strike me as being particularly "metal". Sure, slapping some paintings with pentagrams up on the wall and playing a certain theme of music helps, but to me it just seemed like a neighborhood bar trying to play up a concept they'd seen work elsewhere. Eh. The food was okay. Definitely nothing exceptional. The red sauce on the pizza tasted like tomato paste from a can. The service was very friendly-- we had two different severs come check up on us throughout the night, they struck the perfect balance of being attentive without being obnoxious. They even gave me a free beer after I ordered three different beers they were all out of. And that brings me to the beer: Average. I ordered a Groovey's Purple Beerd to start, which I believe was brewed with black currants. It was okay, definitely drinkable but not memorable. My friend ordered the Ale to Yoto, a blueberry wheat, which I was actually very impressed by. Another one of my friends ordered the Cephalic Skunk wheat, which I did not enjoy. He found it to be rather flat, as did another girl who ordered one of their beers (I can't remember which one). She told the server it was flat and he brought her a different kind--- but why, at a brewery, are two kegs of your own beer flat? To me, that's completely unacceptable. I also tried a sip of the chocolate mint stout, which my friend really enjoyed but I though tasted like Nyquil. To each their own, I suppose. However if you order individual slices, they are never, ever the same size. One day you might get HUMONGOUS slices, the next time they aren't big enough to fill up a toddler... How about some standardization here so people know what the hell to expect when ordering food. Lastly, the beer. I only come here to support them, because I appreciate a metal themed brewery. .
