Unfortunately, our experience at this café was disappointing, and it was consistent across both of our visits. The café seemed very disorganized, with employees running around without clear, designated responsibilities. Tables were left uncleaned, and no one seemed to be checking on patrons or making sure guests were taken care of. On both visits, we had to ask for our check rather than having someone come by to see if we needed anything. The buffet was another disappointment, as much of the food was cold rather than being maintained at an appropriate serving temperature. When we tried to ask questions, we were sometimes cut off before we could finish, which made the experience feel rushed and unwelcoming. We were also staying at the Starlite Hotel, where breakfast at the café was included with our stay. Unfortunately, the café staff did not seem to know anything about the hotel's breakfast arrangement. This created unnecessary confusion and made us feel as though the hotel and café were not communicating with each other. There are some fairly simple changes that could make a big difference. Employees should have clearly designated jobs and responsibilities so that the café operates more efficiently. Staff should also be more attentive to patrons, regularly checking tables and making sure guests have what they need. The hotel and café should have a clear agreement regarding included breakfasts, and hotel guests could perhaps be given vouchers or another simple form of identification to make the process easier for both guests and staff. read more

Must try: Hog Jowl Nachos and Green Chili Pork Navajo Tacos! Why: I really enjoyed the Native American flavors in the Nachos and Tacos. Both were packed with flavor and were large portions. I loved the red chili queso and cotija on the nachos. I had to ask waiter how to properly eat the tacos since they were so big - he said not with fork and knife but with your hands! I had fun stuffing my face! I also loved the tacos were on fry bread, which reminded me of an Asian fried donut in texture and flavor. Tacos also came with rice and beans - the rice in particular was unique in flavor as it was cooked with lemon and chili. Everything was fantastic. Notes: The waiter was welcoming, friendly, attentive, and helpful. He provided recommendations for my entire meal, which were all amazing including the refreshing local beer. Ordered the New York Strip and Eggs ($25 each). The strip itself was cooked well, but sub par meat. It felt like a sirloin and not a strip, lots of chewing to be done. You can tell the prices are inflated simply to combat the Hilton daily credit for members. Subtract $15 from everything and it makes more sense. Other reviews confirm buffet is over priced, etc. The service was interesting. The servers were slow and definitely unconcerned about your experience. Came back one more time for a bottle of wine (their menu was inaccurate). I asked for the $31 bottle to-go since we did have a room credit and was told they did not have it but they had one that was "basically the same." I asked if the price was the same. No. It was $40. No big deal, ended up getting a more expensive bottle but 30% more is not basically the same, poor service once again. Overall the atmosphere was nice. We ate here our first morning and did not return *to eat* after branching out as others have suggested, we found much better options (one morning we went to McDonalds over this place). The lackluster of breakfast kept us from ever trying lunch or dinner. Great hotel (free with points so can't complain about the hotel itself), not a great restaurant for the popular tourist spot. read more

We had high hopes since I've had Navajo tacos in AZ so thought this could be good. Either it was a bad night or just all bad. They were short staffed. The first order was a Navajo fry bread with honey which was very good. After, it all went downhill. I don't eat pork and my order was mixed up with another pork dish. My daughter's food was cold. Both meals (2 of 3) sent back. Second round cold again and sent back. Probably microwaved because the third time it was soggy. We were finally comp'd two of the three meals. Very disappointing. Many apologies from server and what staff was there were friendly however over-whelmed. I don't think we would go back with other options in the area. read more

This quaint little bistro on the threshold of Yellowstone's west gate serves up some truly fantastic Native American-styled dishes which, to be fair, is not a cuisine that I am very familiar with, although after our visit to Black Sheep, is something I hope to change in the future. Honestly, I wasn't sure what to expect to find on the menu, but feeling adventurous, our curiosity was paid off in spades! But first, the other facets: the interior décor is clean and crisp; our server was a little green around the gills, but otherwise pleasant and attentive, if a little shy; prices were fair and portion sizes more than adequate. My wife had the green chile pork Navajo taco, which comes on a solid slab of fry bread, and drizzled in a sweet sauce that surprised my wife at first with its unexpected flavor, but it won her over quickly, and she ended up raving about it by the end of her meal. Similarly, my black sheep burger on a nanniskadii bun (the ONLY way to have it, if you ask me) hit all the right spots: herby, buttery, and onion-y; makes me wish this was something we could regularly get back home in Portland! What began as a quick stop for a bite to eat before embarking on our first ever adventure through Yellowstone ended up being one of the most memorable meals of our entire four-state road trip. We stayed at the Starlight Hotel, so we ended up eating here pretty frequently just for the convenience. However, after exploring a few other places in the vicinity, we realized this place is really not worth it--either for the price or the taste. We tried a large variety of items during our stay, and unfortunately, most fell short: Loaded Nachos with Chicken (~$20): It was okay, but way overpriced and completely unbalanced. It was mostly just a mountain of chips with barely any toppings. There were very few pieces of chicken, beans, or onions, and so few specks of tomato I could barely tell they were there. Kids' Cheese Pizza ($10): Honestly horrible and definitely not worth ten bucks. It didn't look or taste like pizza at all. It was just rectangular-cut pieces of bread with Mexican blend cheese melted on top. Kids' Chicken Strips: Decent, no real complaints here. Caramel Pudding ($10): Not bad! It satisfied my sweet tooth and was probably the highlight of our meals here, though $10 for a pudding is pretty steep. Breakfast Sides ($4 each): The roasted potatoes ($4) were giant wedges that were essentially flavorless. The side of sausages ($6) felt dry, and each sausage was only bite-sized, which felt like a rip-off. The side of beans ($4) had some cheese on top but honestly tasted like canned beans. Veggie & Fruit Sides ($4 each): The grilled asparagus ($4) actually tasted very good, but the portion size was tiny. On the other hand, the roasted zucchini ($4) was basically burnt. The side of fruit ($4) was an incredibly small portion--it looked like they just cut a couple of strawberries into eight tiny pieces and threw in a few blueberries. Bottom line: Just don't eat here. Explore a few restaurants outside the hotel before you give in to the convenience. There are much better options nearby, and some (like Pete's Pizza) even deliver. Opt for those first. read more

We arrived for breakfast well after the rush, but no tables were clean. They had to clean a table to seat us, which seemed to be the only time they would clean a table, making anyone who wanted to be seated wait longer than necessary. No one seemed to want to take our order, and the table next to us got up and left. They brought me the wrong order, then after bringing me the right one, told me they would be back with a spoon but never did. I finally had to get up and find someone to get me a spoon. No one checked back during the rest of the meal. The table by us had to find someone to bring their bill, as did we. Food was average, and when we left, the tables that hadn't been cleaned off when we arrived were still dirty. Plenty of other good places that might actually want your business. We are staying at the Starlite hotel and ate here for dinner last night and breakfast this morning. Dinner was 4.5/5 stars and we highly recommend while breakfast was only 2.5/5 and we wouldn't recommend. For dinner we had the grilled flat bread with the green chili stew 5/5 delicious. We also had the bison burger 5/5 and the sweet potato fries 2/5- they were wedges and too soft. Our kids had a variety of sides (rice, fried egg, fries, fry bread) and loved it all, plus the kids Mac and cheese 4/5. The wine and service were both great as well. Unfortunately, breakfast was a completely different experience. The servers were nice but disorganized. Three of us had the breakfast hash and gave it 1/5 stars. It was dry, flavorless, and the bacon was so undercooked it was raw. The French toast on the other hand was phenomenal 5/5. So, we would definitely come back for dinner, but will go somewhere else for breakfast. read more
