This had to have been some of the worst food I've ever tried. 2 gyros...1 chicken, the other beef, chicken and lamb. Both were absolutely terrible and extremely dry. Service was good, place was empty and after the first bite I knew exactly why. The sauce tasted strange and loose. This is by far no where near authentic food. It was absolutely gross. You can tell the demographic that enjoys this food. Anyone else with working taste buds should stay away. Gross. Edit to update: It is now the following day and my stomach hurts really bad from eating this food. After consuming and review, I began to become bloated and have been bloated with stomach cramps since yesterday. I haven't eaten anything since and am stuck on the toilet. Wanting something different for our palates, and with some in-country experiences in the past, we opted for some nearby Turkish food. Walk up counter to order and self seating was easy. Food was very good. My friend and I split appetizer of dolma. Seasoning perfected with only 'eh' on slightly tough grape leaves. Our shared Tavuk Iskender Kebab was spot on and authentic! Place wasn't busy at all, only two dinners at the time I went. We ordered our food which was the kabob combo and three meat combo. The kabob combo was f'n good. Wasn't over cooked nor was it bland. This is the second time I visited the Black Sea Restaurant and I was as happy with the food as I was the first time. Both times I was with a larger group of people, so we could easily push tables together to create a large enough table to accommodate us all. There are many items on the menu to choose from which was a surprise considering the small size of the restaurant. We chose a platter to share between 2 people. It came with four pitas, a bed of rice, variety of cold vegetables, hot vegetables (onions, peppers), and many types of thinly-sliced meat. We could create our own sandwiches and use the accompanying sauce to flavor it, or eat the items off the platter and dip them into the sauce. The meal was very filling, and we were each able to take home containers filled with extras. Mine provided two additional meals. The price was about $22 total (so $11 each). For $11, I had lunch in the restaurant plus 2 more meals at home - quite a deal! Others in our group had soup and individual meals; and everyone enjoyed their lunch. I needed Mediterranean food. Thankfully, Black Sea was close, I wouldn't have to swim across an ocean. I have always had good experiences with Black Sea, that is, until today. Don't get me wrong. The food was good, as always. But the Meze Platter was missing the dolma, falafel, lemon, and pepperoncini. It was just pita bread, humus, olives, feta, tomato, and lettuce. I was very disappointed, since the main reason to order it is the dolma and falafel. The doner was great, but I have to give a bad review when literally half of what I wanted to eat was missing from my order. The restaurant is connected to a run down furniture store and shares the parking lot with a gun shop. Do not let that stop you from stopping in! I have mixed feelings about Black Sea - I rate them a solid 3 stars. There were some good things and a few lame things about my visit. The best part of my meal was the beginning and the end. The Turkish Coffee (before the food arrived) was great. And the Baklava (at the end) was good. 1) First of all: Our SERVER was a doofus. And he was a horrible communicator. He was very quiet and it seemed like he didn't want to speak to us or look at us or even be there in the first place. I asked him what dishes are distinctly Turkish. Wow, I completely stumped him! He was speechless. After what seemed like hours, he finally and slowly and painfully told me it's the coffee. And then he said it's the special Turkish style eggplant. And finally, he told me Turkey was the originator of ALL Middle Eastern food. Okay, now he was really reaching for answers and completely making things up. 2) Second, the APPETIZERS: The eggplant tasted great. I love the flavors. On the other hand, they were soggy and mushy. I've never had soggy eggplant before. Yuck! The texture was gross. Not sure if that's the way it's supposed to be but...definitely not my fave. The Meze Platter was pretty good though. 3) Third, the ENTREE: We got the Kebab Combination for two. It was good but it had wimpy portions of food disguised in large piles of lettuce. Kinda disappointing. I'm a big guy and I could have eaten the whole plate myself, no problem. It seemed like a portion for one person, not two. 4) Fourth, UNPROFESSIONAL: I watched a dude back a van up to the front door and wheel supplies right through the dining room. Then he kept his van at the front door and threw on his company shirt, reporting for duty. Seemed kinda tacky, amateur hour. Rolling stock through the dining room and then, lazily, leaving your employee vehicle in the best customer parking spot - not cool. 5) Fifth, PRICING: The prices were okay. The combo was over-priced considering the wimpy light weight portions. I probably would have been a LOT happier if I stayed next door at the White Bear Meadery, drinking mead and eating a Heggies Pizza. I've had a gyro craving for about a month and Black Sea has been on my hit list. I was home sick and after 48 hours in bed with no fiancé around during lunch time to cater to me, it was about to go down. I dragged my weak body out of bed and took the 8 minute drive to retrieve my meat filled pita. I arrived at 12:07pm, and left at 12:09pm, with my gyro and fries. It took me longer to drive there then to place my order and pay for my lunch. Walking in was slightly awkward. It felt like I was walking into someone's home. Everyone eating stopped to look up. Well hello there folks... Don't expect anything fancy. The place is outdated and could use a facelift, but whatever. There's an order counter/small open kitchen across the entrance. I felt like I was making a walk of shame to it. I was most likely self conscious from literally going from bed to car, looking extra busted. The menu's pretty big on top of the order counter so I just told the guy what I was looking for. He asked if I wanted lamb and beef or chicken gyro. I didn't even know chicken gyros existed. No thanks. There was another guy literally closing the lid on a to go container before I reached for my wallet. Lucky for me there was another call in order that was exactly the same as mine so they gave me his. Score. $5.99, and 2 minutes later I'm on my way home to enjoy my delicious lunch. At home. There was ample gyro meat piled perfectly into my pita with lettuce, tomato, and onion. I dosed it in cucumber sauce and devoured every last bite. The fries could have been a bit crispier, and I like my cucumber sauce a bit thicker. However, for less than 6 bucks, fast and friendly service, and a yummy gyro, I'll certainly see you again Black Sea. read more

No one was hardly around at 6 o clock on a Monday. I thought that was strange at first but we were able to be seated fast so no problems there. This is a quiet little joint with minimal decor and very clean. My husband and I stopped here for lunch. It has been on my to try list for a while. The staff are very friendly and helpful. We started out with the meze appetizer platter. The dressing on the platter was very good as well as the hummus. I had the Et Kebab (beef) and WOW, it was cooked to perfection. It's so tender, just melts in the mouth. I can't remember the last the time I had beef so tender. My husband had the combination platter with gyro, chicken and lamb. He enjoyed it very much. The star of the show for him had to be the Turkish Coffee. Its got a bitter odd taste that just makes you want to drink more. I especially loved how the coffee is served. In a beautiful cup holder with saucer and lid. I will definitely go back for the beef and the beautifully served Turkish coffee. read more

In the middle of nowhere WBL is this small joint that serves up decent Mediterranean food. We ordered fried eggplant (YUM) and spinach pie (nothing special just typical spinach pie) and the combo platter for 2 - even though there were 4 of us. But it was the perfect amount of food all for $30 total! What I truly like about this place is non of the food I've tried tastes or looks greasy. This is the satellite restaurant to the original in Minneapolis, and is conveniently situated nearby me. I was delighted to find there was a Turkish restaurant so close! When we arrived, I realized I'd driven past it without noticing it. The signage was unfortunately inconspicuous and more reminiscent of an auto shop than a restaurant. However, once inside we were treated warmly and seated. The atmosphere was somewhat Spartan (get it? I slay me!) and while the tables and floor were very clean it was the only real detractor to our dining experience. We ate the Iskender kebab and another kebab plate after dolmas and spinach borek, all of which were delicious. The leftovers were just as good! I will definitely return. read more

The food here is just delicious. We had the sort of "a little of everything for two" platter and it was amazing. So much food! Also I liked that it is super-casual. There isn't any ambiance, just great food and nice people. Sometimes I enjoy ambiance but, most of the time, I am really just a good food sort of gal. Maybe my Dad took me to pancake joints with lumberjack specials and waitresses who called me "hon" a little too often, but I'm perfectly fine with Naugahyde booths and nothing at all swanky hanging in the wall as long as a place is clean, friendly, and serves a great meal. So you should go here. Your tummy will thank you, and your wallet will, too. And if you need to look at lovely decor while chowing down, museums have good websites these days so whip out your phone and enjoy. read more

The borek (spinach pie) was great! I tried several items including Ayran ( sour yogurt drink) and I would say this place is good for an enjoyable Mediterranean lunch. When we lived in California we lived down the street from this Armenian place. It was my husband's obsession. I think he sometimes forgot to get groceries just so we had an excuse to go there. Now living in Minnesota we have been craving some of the familiar foods from CA. Black Sea has been on my radar for some time, but for whatever reason we never made it in. We came here after spending hours working on paperwork for my car. We were hungry and tired, so something familiar sounded good (plus this was like right next door). I went with the doner plate (#23). It was really good. I've had other Mediterranean food since moving here, but it didn't have that super simple/authentic taste to it. The plate wasn't fussed up with a lot of unnecessary extras. It was a very well done doner (gyro, or shaved meat basically) that stood on its own merits. The side salad was also, again, quite simple, but that wasn't disappointing. It was nice to have just simple and clean flavors. We also got a side order of hummus. The hummus was quite good. Very smooth and good flavors. Again there is no dolling the the food up, it is just letting the food speak for itself and that works well. The pita they serve here was a highlight for me. It was super fluffy and had that right amount of chew. I stole my husbands so I could have extra. I think the only thing I would want to change is maybe adding a bit more yogurt sauce to the plate. I found that the doner got a bit dry without enough sauce. The sauce itself was also really good, but lacked that big zing. I think we found our new go to "forgot" to get groceries spot though. 25/100 read more

Great food at fair prices!! I'll be a regular! Update, I recently ordered a dolma for pick up. Immediately noticed no meat on the spits..... It's evidently sliced, and refrigerated, and brought out as needed. Understandable with the current situation. But, it's heated on the griddle, and the fat/grease stays with the meat, not desirable to me! Overly generous portion of meat in the sandwich, but not enough onion, and tomato. Disappointing..... Want to go back, but the excess of the greasy taste will keep me from doing so. Maybe at least press the meat between paper towels when taken off the griddle to reduce the grease?!..... read more
