The place look deserted when I arrived but a quick call connected me with John who let me know his wife was in residence and would happily show me their wares. Violet gave me a tour of the roaster, explained the various coffee beans in house. She gave me a glimpse of future plans including bigger quantities of beans sold at a better price. Truth be told pricing was spot on given how fresh the product is. While you can buy Jovi on Amazon and even through their website, having them in town ensures the freshest roast and some great conversation with the owners. I ended up with a bag of Marcala and their holiday blend featuring beans from Honduras and Antigua. The owners have traveled to the region and learned the preparation process there. When I stopped by on a weekday evening at 9pm it was packed. They had stations setup throughout the store to order different goods, which helped to alleviate the rush. Knafeh ($6) - They offered 2 types of knafeh, one with cheese and one with custard. I went with the one made with Nabulsi cheese and topped with shredded phyllo, and soaked in sugar syrup. It was warm, crispy and delicious! Karak tea ($5) - This milk tea drink was made with aromatic spices, primarily cardamom, cloves, ginger and cloves. I was happy to see they used whole milk instead of evaporated milk. The drink was incredibly rich and creamy and tasted great. Turkish delight ($18 / lb.) - This was extremely fresh, soft and chewy, made with cornstarch, sugar, nuts. Some of the varieties I tried had chocolate and/or fruits. The baklava here was fresh made with layers of phyllo dough, chopped nuts, and held together with some honey. The nut offerings here included, almonds, walnuts, peanuts and a few more. Overall I was impressed with everything they offered here with the exception of the nuts, which I thought were just ok. I'd definitely return if I was in the area.

It was great to hear his heart and how he came to be at District. We were grateful for the stories of him partnering to empower roasters from Costa Rica, Salvador, and other places. Given that weve had to give up so much in the coffee drinking experience we try and get what we do consume to taste as fresh as possible so weve turned to getting our decaf beans roasted locally. Weve tried a couple of places in Houston and just recently came across District Coffee. Once we checked their website and made sure it was swiss water processed and not bathed in paint stripper chemicals we decided to give them a try... the head roaster Alex is a humble guy who has a family operated business near the 249/Cypress area. I drove out to the District headquarters to pick up a pound of decaf and Alex gave me a tour around the facility which was modest, but professional. Before i left, Alex asked about the reason for decaf and i explained that we mix it with regular to create a half caff blend and with that he walked over to a bin in the shop and pulled out an additional bag of whole bean half caff blend of their signature roast and said it was "on the house" since i had come all the way out from the Sugar Land area. Wow. Now that was unexpected and also very nice considering gas costs near four bucks these days. We just had a pour over cup of that this morning and it was very, very smooth. If the regular whole bean decaf is anywhere close to the smoothness of this signature half caff roast we will most likely add District coffee to our regular rotation of coffees for our morning routine. He was pleasant to talk with and the coffee has good flavor. The background music provided good ambiance. I won't be a regular here because I tend to prefer espresso-based drinks and they do not have an espresso machine, but I would go here when I'm looking for a cold brew and I'm near the intersection of University & Texas.

Lo and behold we were recommended this gem around the corner from our stay. I had the cinnamon roll latte and my bride had a smores-flavored latte. Thoroughly enjoyed them. I believe their beans are roasted in house with the roaster inside. What we absolutely loved. We went back the next morning on our way out of Burton and the lady who worked there found out we were there to celebrate our son's birthday. She remembered that he had a sister and gave us two cake balls for them. Unprompted, just really nice of her. This little gem of a coffee house is an absolutely must-try if you are in the area.
