I'm a huge fan of Stevie Pricks and her talent, and she absolutely delivered with my latest tattoo. I'm currently working on an 80's themed sleeve and she did the most perfect Garfield piece for me. The line work is super clean, the color is bold and saturated, and the character looks exactly how it should -- playful, nostalgic, and full of personality. Stevie has an incredible eye for detail and really understands how to bring cartoon-style tattoos to life. The whole experience was great from start to finish, and you can tell she truly cares about her craft. Booked an apt. w/ Hailee on her website a few weeks out. Website indicates her rates are $104/hr, and deposit is $50. She indicates sizes for time, so I booked for 3 hours. Was charged $100, but thought, ok that'll go towards the total later, so it's not a big deal. 3 hours before my appointment she asks to reschedule for personal reasons. I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt and said, ok let's reschedule. We did within 3 days. Went to the new apt. and talked about the design. It was a bit bigger than I imagined, so she mentioned it would probably be a bit more time. I said ok, fair that makes sense. Never ONCE did she mention her rate was $200/hr. And, her website seemed straight forward, so I never clarified. Big mistake. She stopped after a little over 2 hours, and then told me her rate is $200/hr. I was exhausted after working a full day and accommodating her schedule, so I just paid her. I thought, did I misread something? Looked back at her site and rates and texted her to explain my confusion. She AGREED it's confusing. I asked her to meet me in the middle at $150/hr, cuz that felt fair. Nope. No budging. She then took 3 weeks to reply with availability. And, I am in a pickle with an unfinished tattoo! Given her "personal" situation, I think she just needed fast cash. I reached out to the owner to explain what happened. Zero response. Don't waste your time or money. Her art is cool. I will give her that, but she DOES NOT have the experience to charge $200/hr. Not the efficiency either. This is not my first tattoo, and with experience you're more efficient. Don't waste your time at Black Penny. Check out Ventura Tattoo a few blocks down. They are clear on pricing and time. read more

My two sisters and I took our mom to Black Penny this past weekend so that we could get matching tattoos for her 80th birthday. We worked with Henry, and he was awesome! He has such a nice way about him, and really connected with our family. He did wonderful work and we will definitely go to him in the future. The studio is awesome! Loft feel, open, airy, industrial modern. It has such a good vibe. We did a Yelp search to find a studio and could not have been happier that we ended up at Black Penny with Henry. This is the nicest tattoo shop in the county! So clean, so professional and inviting I love the work i got done by Alex a little over a month ago. She was quick and light handed which I appreciate as I've been scarred in the past by an artist with a heavy hand at a different shop. I appreciated that she respected me asking questions about the ink she uses, as I am vegan for ethical/health reasons etc. Alex quickly comforted me with accurate and useful knowledge and reassured me she only uses vegan inks. So the quick run down is... The artist we retained is super rude. Childish. And self centered. My sister and I had to wait over an hour for her to finally tell us she wasn't willing to work with us in a strange random and confusing interaction. The details are below.. I scheduled an appointment with hailee aka mousteeth at black penny for 4. Get a text from hailee at 338 telling us she's grabbing lunch. Be back soon. Ok no worries see you soon. my sister and I get there early don't mind waiting 4 rolls around nothing 445 rolls around we're starting to think something happened maybe she's standing us up or maybe she had a personal emergency. I text asking if she's okay are we still on. Legit concerned for her. She comes in and steams down the little walkway insincerely and very quickly says sorry. That's it. No hey no Introduction just an empty sorry. I start to say yeahhh so what do you think we should do to my sister and hailee interupts to say we can just not do this if you want. I am just like confused at this point. Like did I miss something?? Anyways you could hear in her voice she was upset. You could just feel it. She was upset with us for not being sunshine and rainbows when she decided to grace us with her presence. 104 dollars I paid for our time slot. We both have kids and needed babysitting to come to this appointment. My sister drove out from la to make it. We ended up cancelling and hailee storms off to the back and silently refunds my deposit and that's it. Literally hiding in the back peaking up over the room divider as my sister and I leave. Poor character. Super childish. No manners whatsoever. I get you're an artist and you think people should just bend to you because you have a service they'd want but when you make people wait over an hour for you to show up to something they've already paid for don't expect them to be all chipper. I came to Black Penny after a trip to Yosemite. My parents came to visit that week and I wanted to get that memory of our time in Yosemite tattooed.
