I love the quirky and brilliant fashions in this place and I've experienced nothing but unusual kindness from the staff, as well as compliments for the clothes. They found my gold ring in the dressing room area and did not know how to get in touch with me, but the next time I entered the store they asked me if I had lost it. I was on the verge of renting a metal detector to troll my garden, and was so grateful not to have to. And I have favorites from this store dating back decades. Five stars for sure. read more

Ok, this store is so cost prohibitive I can't believe it. BUT, when they have sales, they have the most fantastic sales and the finest quality clothes. the store is very artsy and set up nicely. They even sell soaps, shoes and tea, yes they sell tea. I bought some.......expensive. Good tea though. OH and yeah, they have issues with clothes being hung properly. My thing with that is, hey, you take it down you put it back BUT,when there are little signs that say "please fold clothes" Uh, no, that isn't my job, that is yours. Unless you pay me, I don't fold. I put back as neat as I can where I got it, but no folding. read more

If I could give NO stars, I would. Over the years, I've always thought that no one really runs this place. It's motto could well be "We Don't Care". Today, they could have had an easy $1000 sale from me. I was looking for something specific I know they have in great numbers. I drove two hours, only to have a poorly trained sales person shrug robotically and mumble apologies. I walked out empty handed, now knowing for sure that the whole store attitude is utter boredom and disinterest. I've never quite understood why this store stays in business. From the moment one enters the door, the attitude is "We see you. Now leave." Awful experience today. Never again. read more

What a beautiful shop. The attendant was very friendly. However, when I read that this boutique was cost prohibitive I didn't realize that the prices would be so out of touch with what people are willing to pay- what a shame. Despite this, I walked away without longing for any item. I am certainly willing to invest in a handmade craft item but this shop, a lonely place with nary a customer, is not that kind of establishment. read more

My favorite clothing store in the world! Pricey, yes, but worth it because they last forever and you can get such good deals! I certainly don't know who they are talking about when they talk about rude employees. It must have been Portland because no one in Rockland could possibly be considered rude. They are the nicest people in the world. Perhaps it is the messenger. And no one has ever asked me to fold up things! And I look at everything!!! And try on everything!!! Much like Cindy L wrote, I will NEVER go back there due to the incredibly rude customer service. A woman (I think the owner?) made it absolutely clear she had no interest of me being in the store (funny, being it was a Saturday in February during a blizzard). Unfortunately, I also used to frequent their new restaurant Fog (including have a 25 person private dinner there), but now knowing it's controlled by the same owners, I will never frequent Black Parrot or Fog again. It was literally one of the worst customer experiences I've ever had in my life. read more

At the urging of my sister, I checked this place out on my last trip to Portland. Absolutely beautiful space. I read on a website that the building used to be an old book repository from the 1800s. There were soaring windows, gorgeous wood floors running the length of the shop and some great offerings both in modern apparel and house wares. Vanessa Bruno and Lutz and Patmos to name a few. It was really a treat to browse in there. If I had not already splurged on about ten other things that day, I would've definitely also splurged in there. Sigh. What a terrific clothes selection! Let me say this: Living in San Francisco for two years, I often found myself empty-handed in favorite boutiques, thinking, "I'll just wait until I can get to the Black Parrot." I'm not quite sure who does the buying, but there is always something new & unique from a recent show or new designer - at a mix of prices (well, a little pricy but worth it...) Many well-known brands (which I am forgetting right now..) are carried in addition to only-at-the-Black-Parrot finds. Good for everything from formal dresses, lingerie, ad jewelry to stylish jeans, t-shirts and sweaters. read more

Black Parrot is one of my all-time favorite stores. In fact, it's always worth a trip to Rockland just to see the latest treasures: everything from beautiful purses to chic clothing and shoes and well crafted brushes from Germany. As for some comments about stand-offish employees, I couldn't disagree more. I always find the sales satff to be extremely helpful and responsive. Guess what I love most is the understated elegance. Fashion with a great "coolness" factor in Rockland????? YES....love Black Parrot! The owner has a great curatorial eye, the selection is wonderful, and the clothing is an eclectic, creative mix of pieces that will be in my closet for a long time. The book selection is enough to qualify as a great book store....could spend my time just perusing the art and cookbook assortment and then go out with an armload AND a pair of great Antipast socks that formerly I could only find at Barneys New York! Highly recommend a trip to this store when in Rockland. read more

I live in New York and have a house near Rockland, Maine. My fashionista friends in NYC ask me where I get the great clothes I find at the Black Parrot and cannot believe it! The prices are off planet, but the taste of the buyer/owner is impeccable, and every single time I visit I find something that I remember forever, even if I cannot always afford it. I do shop here regularly though, often from the back room sale rack, and the sales people could not be nicer, even giving me a discount a couple of times on full price merchandise (for loyalty? or did they just like me?) It is really a treat to find clothes that are made one at a time from lots of different countries; each piece is an art object. They are so costly because of care in fabrication and import tax, but it is better to get one really perfect piece than the quantity of clothes we all buy and never wear. My wardrobe is smaller since I started shopping here, but much better! I also love having clothes with tiny designer details that only I know about: the perfect lining color inside the sleeve, the tiny decorative stitches on the tail of a coat, the one unmatching button that makes the dress! I visit here with the mentality of going to a museum, and when I do leave with a new piece, usually feeling a little giddy because of the price, I am always happy I have bought something permanent that will outlast whimsical seasonal changes. read more
