The barman was a chatty friendly bloke and it would seem really enjoyed his job - which makes a difference. There is a good selection of drinks on sale here and they are happy to mix it up a bit if you ask for something "off-piste". It is very well looked after and everything is clean and tidy. You can hire this place out for occasions and the staff will work with you on what exactly you want. There is a patio area to the rear, which is lovely and quiet and you forget that you are near a main road. Good prices, fantastic service, I am definitely going to be making this one of my preferred local pubs to go to. If reviews did emojis, I'd probably insert a heart blowing kiss one here.

We used to come to this 'back water' pub 20 years ago when the food was great, in recent years it has been a sad reflection of British Pub life with an empty car park and we have avoided it. We saw that it had reopened as a pub/pizza restaurant and popped in for lunch yesterday on a bright sunny day. The dark old pub has been transformed, the new owners who have been here now for a year have created a beautiful garden with lots of tables overlooking the wide open fields and the food was great. Mainly pizza and salads but they also do an 'oven baked breakfast' which I am just itching to try and take away. This bright and happy pub restaurant deserves to be very successful, looking forward to coming back with the kids very soon.

For starters the bruschetta was fresh and really tasty chowed that down quick as you like, the boyff had chicken strips, which we perfectly okay, but nothing special to be honest and I think it was re-constituted chicken and not chicken breast. For mains the list of pizzas were not your typical type and there was an excellent selection and quite random toppings you could ask for, since this place is raved for about it's pizza, I opted for Ingeus pizza - chicken, pepperoni, meatballs, onion and mozzerella - with extra gorgonzola cheese and green peppers. The boyff went for a pasta dish - penne, tomato and bechamel sauce with chorizo and peas. I enjoyed my pizza it was cooked very well and evenly. Although I got a bit of food envy with the boyffs pasta as that was really good. They welcome children and you could see the waitress taking time out to pick up children that had fallen over and run back and forth with jugs of squash for people's kids in the hot weather. Although at one point, there was a child that kept kicking a ball under our table and feet whilst we were eating, but I blame the parents and not the pub! The decor is lovely and well maintained, in the bar area, which is quite limited, - but perfectly formed!! - is a TV that they have some sport on, but it is on silent and tucked away, most definitely there if you want to keep an eye, but not at all giving this a sports bar feel. I thought it a bit random that I got a glass of wine in what I would say was a 1/2 pint Carlsberg glass, but there you have it. The whole place just had a relaxing friendly vibe to it and all the staff had smiles. This is definitely on my favourite local places to go to when wanting pizza/pasta. The prices are equivalent to those of the chain places, but here the atmosphere is nicer and the selection better. Make sure you do call up ahead though as a lot of the time they are fully booked.

I am conflicted about giving 4 not 5 stars, and have deliberated over it for a bit, so I will re-assess once I have been back there. This is a typical old school English pub, with all the character and quirkiness that you would expect. On entering you are met with a very chirpy smiling waitress at the bar, and I felt my eyes shifting around to take in the character of the place. There is a TV up in the corner that was showing cricket / golf, but turned down to a level that meant that it wasn't affecting anyone, but loud enough if you wanted to see if England were getting tonked in the Ashes or doing okay! There is the original beam work and brickwork throughout and you can't help but imagine what it was like back in ye olde day. The toilets were lovely, fresh and clean. They had a toilet that flushed properly - can you believe it?! - and actual real toilet paper, not the industrial coil of doom that lets you tear one sheet at a time and leaves you utterly frustrated! Smelt lovely, and not in that over bearing sanitiser spray that can make you choke, but in the way you have at home once you have given the bathroom a good clean :) It is quite obvious that this place has undergone an extensive re-decoration, but under a careful and tasteful eye, keeping all the charm about the place and replacing the old with new contemporary toot! Now onto the food, we went and sat in the garden and didn't have to wait long for our food to be bought out to us. We both ordered a Sunday roast, (which they actually offer in 3 different sizes, much to my delight!). I ordered a medium chicken roast and the boyff ordered a large beef roast. The roasts were bought to us by the chef which I thought was a lovely touch. The food itself was top draw!! Like seriously, the standard you get when someone actually invites you round to theirs for Sunday dinner and puts a lot of effort in. I can't remember the last time I had this standard of a roast in a commercial place and not from some older relative that has made her Sunday roasts things to talk about! It was utterly delish! The roast potatoes were scrummy, meat cooked perfectly, the veg was spot on too. I could not find 1% of fault with the food. Lovely garden area, a snooker and darts area and a snug. I am sure on my next visit I am going to be persuaded to notch this up to the 5 star mark (maybe finding a post dinner chair to slump in will be it!)! The table needed a coat of varnish, and some sort of nail to hold it in place. We bought our drinks and sat down to look at the menu. It all seemed just a bit old hat, worn out - and not in a cool way - needing a good clean and a lick of paint. It didn't have that smell of a village pub that has roast dinners on, in fact the smell was urgggg. My wine tasted like paint stripper. We decided not to eat here and go somewhere else. I think that maybe this place relies on the fact that it is a brilliant location and has a river bank, so they don't have to bother with anything else. As I can't see why it is still going judging on what I saw Sunday.

The pint was a really good pint actually. The barmaid was really friendly and smiley, which was nice. You do get the impression that it is very much where locals go, but that is to be expected since it is located in the village of Shenley. They also had a pool table, which was a £1 a game, so that was fine. Outside there is a garden area and also some picnic tables, some with just umbrellas and others with see through windshields around them. I want to love the place, but is does look a bit grubby on the inside which is a real shame. I think a lick of paint, less freebie posters stuck up on every available piece of wall, and the carpets cleaned and it would change the entire experience. They did say outside that they do food, but inside there were no menus visible, and actually by looking around the pub, I didn't feel encouraged that I wanted to eat there. I will go back, more than likely for a quiet pint with the Boyff when the football is on. Nice bunch of people in there though.
