Oldest bar in England. Loved it with all my heart, actually had my first drink in England at Ye Olde Fighting Cocks. I sat out back at one of the picnic tables and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of interacting with the locals.

My family and I were really eager to have lunch here, but we missed their 3:00 cutoff by about 8 minutes. So we settled for drinks instead. I'm not a beer person, but my family seemed quite pleased with the wide selection of English beers and the prices weren't too bad either. This pub claims to be the oldest in England, though I think a few pubs claim that title. The atmosphere here is very cool--I love the low ceilings and woodwork. Tall people may not appreciate the low ceilings as much as I did--remember to duck! While sipping our drinks, we chose a board game from the few that they have behind the bar, settled up to the fireplace and spent a delightful afternoon. Can't wait to be back and perhaps buy a souvenir t-shirt!

It is considered by the Guinness Book to be the oldest pub in England, though there is some competition from other pubs. Originally, the pub was known as the 'Round House,' likely because of the round-ish, octagonal structure that makes up the main section. As the sport of cock fighting gained a foothold, the pub was re-branded as Ye Old Fighting Cocks, sometime in the 19th century. Today, this country-inn style pub is known locally as "The Fighters." It is rather small inside, so it pays to make a reservation in advance if you're planning on going by. This is a CAMRA pub, and has a great selection of Real Ale, and I tried 3 or 4 of them that were really nice. The menu has a good selection tasty vegetarian options in addition to classic pub favorites. Watch out if you have height! This place was built a while ago, when people taller than 6 feet did not exist. Aside from some low ceilings, that also means you'll find old character awesomeness here. The pub has a standard line of brews and good bartenders. Explore the park nearby, maybe throw a few Frisbees, and unwind with a beer here afterward.

I love this pub. I don't even drink very much and I love it. It is old and dark with wooden tables and little pictures on the wall. We came here after a walk in park in Saint Albans. You can tell this pub is really old. It is comfortable and not sleezy. I read Daily Mail and drank Cranberry while the girlfriend had a pint. I noticed that they also served hot mulled wine here. I usually have itchy feet in pubs but this one was different. I loved the atmosphere so much I could have stayed all day. That is saying something.

They are a little strict here.

I'm in love with this pub. The building, the interior, the neighborhood, the beer, the food - it's all perfect. If you need to reach me, call Ye Old Fighting Cocks. I'll be there during most evenings when I am in St Albans.

Without getting into the debate over whether it's the oldest pub or not, I love this place! It's just nice. Nothing better than sitting around outside in summer at the tables with a pint and friends. The patron's pet dogs on the tables are odd but nice in a way too. Indoors was dark and comfortable. The ceiling was low and slanted, as was the floor. Not a lot of room, but you just feel good being there. Service was busy at the time, on a Sunday in late afternoon. People were queuing up to get drinks and crisps to bring outside. But you just don't mind. The beer itself was ok. Not the best or worst. I had a local brew and there was an odd smell but it tasted good. My second pint was a different beer and this one was better, but not local. Just so you know, they do not serve dinner in the late afternoon. So plan ahead. All in all, everyone seemed to be having a good time. Myself included. Jmx

I would suggest you to book for a Sunday Roast or give a call on a Sunday before show up after 1pm. The roast is okay but nothing special. The place is indeed pretty and old.

This pub is great all year around! Summer great for outdoors and space! Winter great for quizzes and the working FIRE!!! you can smell it halfway up the Abbey and it just wants to invite you in. The staff are also great there and the bar gets wiped down regularly!!! Only thing i dont like is the main area there is carpet on the floor just a personal hate. But as a whole a great pub (also ask to play guess who, jenga or more) Highly recommend.

fantastic food - Sunday roast and slow cooked belly pork were superb! Yorkshire puddings were listed as a side dish for 1.50 each but on the other hand does it not show so much respect for them to be listed as a separate menu entry? it's up to you to decide ;) ales are good, location very nice, especially in good weather.

Great old place, worth seeing if you can get there! Watch the stairs and odd places to sit and be sure to take in the history.

My husband worked here about 25 years ago. Very picturesque. Nice beer garden. One of the oldest pubs in England.

A whole bunch of guest ales and ciders are available. The staff are great at serving customers. For those that like a quiet game on the sunday afternoon there are a selection of board games provided by the pub. Great place to pop in for a pint.

I'm glad I picked this one though. 5 real ales on pump, including a couple I had never heard of before. I enjoyed an excellent pint of The Rev. James and was a bit disappointed that I didn't have time to stay for another, they seem to rotate their selection of ales on a regular basis (they have a list for the month on the tables) I would have liked to have tried some of the food too, it seemed quite popular as the friendly barmaid bustled in and out of the kitchen with orders. In fact they have a weekly international food night, which I think is an excellent idea. Curry one weekWienerschnitzl the nextsounds brilliant! The layout is slightly unusual, it doesn't quite feel like a traditional pub, but it is hard to explain why. I'm not sure why but it almost felt to me more like a pub in a coastal town. I could just be talking nonsense though as less than 1% of my drinking has been accomplished within proximity of a sea or ocean of some kind. Outside there are a couple of tables out front and a raised beer garden to the side, which is a particularly nice place to spend an hour or few in the summer.

I was lucky to be in St Albans for a rare snow storm in late Feb/ Early March 2018. (Only last week…read moreat the time of writing this) The neighborhood was particularly beautiful with the snow covered streets and sidewalks. I trudged through the snow to find this place. It's off the beaten path of most tourist spots. I love a real English pub, and this place is rotten with charm. Foragers brews some of their own ales. I tried a unique ale that was flavored with Doug fir needles. That was a recurring theme in some of the food. The FOOD! The food is why I would go back again and again. Foragers is an incredibly creative restaurant without being pretentious. I didn't find one item on the menu, that I could get some place else. I got two dishes. One was a seasonal root vegetable soup. A hearty soup that was warming and so delicious. The entree was a mushroom and barley dish that had one of the best earthy, mushroom tastes I've ever had. On a cold winter night, I couldn't have found a more comforting meal. With a beer, the soup and then this dish, I was stuffed, but had to finish every last bite of the barley. I'm lucky to have a work project that is brining me to St Albans several times this year. This is going to be my place for dinner when I am in town.
