The pub takes a bit of finding and is definitely off the main commuter route. However, it was exceedingly busy on a Tuesday lunch time on a chilly late October day so obviously the word is out. If you are lucky (we weren't) you will be able to grab a table by the window and take in the beautiful scenery while you lunch. The menu offers a good selection of pub food including such favourites as bangers and mash, gammon eggs and chips, pies and burgers, as well as lighter bites such as soup and a selection of freshly baked baguettes. The have numerous fish dishes on the daily specials board. I was tempted by the crayfish and crab open sandwich with fries. It was a pleasant surprise to find that the portion size of the fish far outweighed that of the bread. It was super tasty and very filling. The bar has a good selection of lagers, ales and wine, plus all the usual spirits. I chose to wash my sarnie down with a lovely pint of Hooky, an Oxfordshire ale. It's definitely worth making the trip out to this pub but I would advise booking, especially if you are visiting in the summer. Also, request a table by the window if you can.

Situated in the pretty village of Lower Beeding, just across the road from the Michelin starred South Lodge Hotel, it's definitely putting itself on the map. It's already building up a large regular clientele, the car park was almost full when we arrived at 12.30 on a Saturday lunch time. There are numerous rooms with open fires, pictures of local cricket teams, and shelves full of cook books. The table we sat at was converted from an old Singer sewing machine table - a lovely touch. The gardens also looked fantastic and I will definitely be back when the sun is shining (if that ever happens this summer!) The food options ranged from tasty bar snacks including scotch eggs, caramelised sausages and a whole Camembert, to a great value set menu at £13 for two courses or £17 for three courses, to a daily changing al la carte menu. We plumped for the 3 course set menu. Squid salad with fennel and orange salad to start, served in a delicious and surprisingly warm tomato sauce. For main course I went for mackerel fillet served on a bed of crushed Charlotte potatoes, spinach and a superb cream sauce. To finish off, we all went for the lemon posset with lemon ice cream and a shortbread biscuit. The dishes were slightly small in appearance, particularly the mackerel, but I was happily stuffed by then end. The service was efficient and friendly, the manager taking time to chat with us and make us feel welcome. With future events including a Argentinian Asado coming up, its certainly a place that will be getting my repeat business.

Having tasted moules several ways whilst in Brittany a couple of weeks ago we enquired how were the moules cooked as we preferred with out cream? The lady behing the bar went to the kitchen to enquire as we had requested the tradition marinere with white wine leeks garlic etc. We were told only with cream. This surely indicated they were not fresh mussels but probably out of a freezer bag! The mussels in cream arrived with some cold french bread and chips-not very enterprising considering this was a restaurant specialising in fish! The two desserts were very adequate. They sat us down and took our drinks order and talked through some of the things on the menu. It wasn't a set menu, which I liked, as most places on Mothers Day force you to have three courses. On a Sunday they have a carvery option and this is what I went for.... WOW!!! Everything was fresh and tasted delicious. Couldn't fault it at all. The carvery is only £10 per person and you can eat as much as you like (except the meats but they do give you ample).

Several of us had the steak, mushroom and Guiness pie, which was very good with plenty of pieces of steak. This is highly recommended. In contrast, the steak and kidney pudding was rather disappointing, with very little steak in it. Apart from that, all of us were very happy with our food. The scallops were sweet and I appreciated the fact that they had left the coral on - there is so much flavour there.
