The setting of this coffee shop is in an old house located right next to the post office. After taking care of an errand my husband and I popped in here one weekday afternoon for a couple of iced coffees. There are various downstairs rooms a large front porch set up with tables and some comfy seating. The location seemed to be popular with the locals as there were several groups located throughout the house either hanging out socially or working. We ordered from an extremely polite and accommodating barista and she was patient while we perused their long list of various coffee flavor concoctions. Although I don't remember the specific ones we ordered they were both pretty good. Although they do not use Torani brand syrups so the flavors did taste a bit synthetic. There are also a lot of various items for sale throughout the shop. I ended up purchasing a little knitted sock that fits on your broom handle to be used as a duster. For only $4 I felt like it was a cute and unique find. I actually wished I bought a couple more as gifts. If you're looking for a good little coffee place in the area that isn't one of the many big chains definitely give Black Chicken Coffee a try! read more

I strolled in here on my way back to Florida and I was so happy I did! I could have chosen a chain coffee place, but that's not how I roll. The barista suggested "Pumpkin Pie" and that's what I went with. It was absolutely delicious!! Several other patrons were ordering frappes, hot coffee, etc. The "house" is decorated very nicely and is the perfect spot to relax, study, etc. A family of children were outside dining on the porch. They have all the flavor pumps in the world to whip up a coffee that you would like. Their menu features a ton of different combos they recommend but you are welcome to make what you like. I am a avid coffee drinker and thought their coffee and options were amazing. They always swap out two coffee bean types out of the 5 to switch it up and even offer samples of their offerings! The atmosphere was amazing and the workers entertained us with some nice conversation. read more

This has been my go to study spot coffee shop all throughout high school. Plenty of comfy seating outside and inside. Free WiFi is also a plus. I love the fact that's it's in a restored historic home and feels cozy like everyone there is at a family gathering at grandmas house. Inside many things are sold beyond just coffee from furniture, decor, and gadgets made by local artists. I LOVE THE MANGER SARAH and all the staff are so helpful and truly get to know the costumers. Here I feel like coming into a home greeted by a quick catch up with family, you feel truly appreciated. Can't recommend this place more, it deserves six stars. read more

I found this place on downtown Lexington. It had good reviews and I was in need of some mid morning caffeine. The place has a little parking lot next to the building and there's some more parking available on the street. They have a long and varied menu. The place seems to get a bit busy around lunch time but the staff is very friendly and very quick. I had a 16 oz. creamy coconut iced latte with double espresso shot. OmG! So well balanced, sweet and creamy, but not watery, you can taste the good coffee. I enjoyed this drink very much and have been craving one ever since. They have a good seating areas inside and on the porch. I believe I found a good spot for my next visit to Lexington read more

Interesting place to explore/stop by. Turn a house into a coffee shop is an adorable idea!!!! I love the decorations inside of the house, saw some wood artworks. The place is spacious, plenty of indoor and outdoor seatings. I'm not really a sweet drinker, so can't comment on the drinks. But the staffs were friendly and sweet was able to adjust the sweetness level for me. I would definitely come back if I need to stop by to do a meeting again! read more

Used to be a nice little spot but last couple of times coffee quality has gone down and not worth the $10 they charge.

Went in the other day and asked for a macchiato. Ended up with a latte that was $10 and not even good. The baristas also had no personality and were not super friendly or seemed to care how they made my incredibly overpriced drink. read more

It was rather cool today for September so I stopped in for a hot drink. This was the first time visiting this shop after a friend mentioned it. Pulling up, it is an old house that has been converted. There's no parking lot so parking is in front by the curb. The rooms have sofas, chairs, and tables. The decor is very vintage including antique China, crystal, vases, figurines, etc. There are a few wood-working items and bagged coffee for sale. I entered into the kitchen and was greeted with a friendly "hello" which was nice. I ordered a hot chocolate. I was disappointed that they did not offer fat-free milk so I settled for 2% milk. They charge a 4% fee if you use a credit card which I do not like and they do not have it posted. This detail should always be posted. The hot chocolate was very good. The chocolate was not too sweet which was great. The shop was quiet and relaxing if you are looking for a peaceful atmosphere. There's wifi available and private rooms if you need to work while you enjoy your drink. Overall, it was a pleasant visit. The decor is older which matches the house so it is a quaint atmosphere While I enjoyed my visit and my drink, there were a few things I wished they had. There were not many baked goods... just a handful of muffins. I would have expected there to be a plethora of baked goods, biscottis, etc. The name includes "and Gifts" but there weren't that many gifts to speak of outside of the few wood-working items and some bags of coffee. The logo is cool so I was planning to buy a T-shirt. There were no T-shirts coffee mugs, etc. Bottom line, if you just want a tasty drink and you don't care about the various coffee shop frills, this place shop is certainly worth a stop. read more

Just driving through town and decided to stop here for a cup of coffee. The place is very homey but the coffee bar it's self is very clean and organized! Everything was labeled and had a place. Staff was helpful and patient. I might be ignorant about coffee lol but my tastebuds were pleased. I ordered an espresso/coffee with snickerdoodle syrup and it was rich and flavorful, it didn't taste like fake flavoring! Oh, God this place is what you want a coffee shop to be. For their lounging furniture, they had couches & furniture like you'd see in a furniture shop showroom. They are in downtown Lexington so you can't come here if you've got a midnight coffee craving but if you can get here when they're open you will get friendly service and very comfy seating. They also have a bookshop attached to the store that you can browse in. Oh, and the drink selection is wonderful. If I could give Black Chicken 10 stars, I would! I remember Black Chicken before it was in its current location. The company is iconic to our small town. I thought the original logo was great and it has always been a hometown go-to. But the current owners upped its appeal when they purchased by also buying the downtown old home the cafe currently resides in and live above the cafe on the private second floor. They are friendly and hospitable and very professional in their business. The baristas are trained very well, and it doesn't matter if I get one of the specialty frappes, or a hot latte, they always make it just right. A few times I have ordered and they have made recommendations based on feedback or personal recommendations to suit my tastes. The atmosphere makes you want to sit for a while, it is clean and comfy with sofas and tables and chairs in all the downstairs rooms and also on the front porch. I typically go every Friday and meet a few friends for coffee and chitchat and we always end up staying for hours. There are other good places in town too, but this is my favorite! read more

Black Chicken Coffee does everything right! By far the best coffee house I have ever been. I only wish that it was within walking distance but then I would never be home. So many variety of coffees to choose from and from what I have had, I look forward to the next. Perfectly brewed and hot. I bought a bag to take home and it disappeared quickly. It is located in a older house 1920'ish. And all downstair rooms are open to enjoy a relaxing conversation, work from home, private cup of java or a team meeting. This place will fit all needs. It is VERY clean and sells many locally made crafts throughout. Board games and books are available for free use. The owners are amazing. So friendly and willing to share the history of the house and the special mirror you must ask about in the room with the fireplace. I am looking forward to my next visit. read more

As I always do while traveling I like to find random local coffee shops instead of going mainstream. On the way to Charlotte we stopped at Black Chicken. They operate out of an old historical house in downtown Lexington. We were greeted by two baristas that were very nice and professional . They offer a lengthy list of coffees/flavors, pastries and to go foods. There are multiple tables to gather at and a nice porch to sit and enjoy your coffee. We came to Lexington has part of the evacuation from Hurricane Florence. Black Chicken Coffee was one of the only businesses still open in the area that had WiFi we could use to get updates on friends, family, and loved ones. As well as updates on our community so to determine when we could head home. The staff were very inviting and supportive of us staying for the majority of the day to get that information. The coffee, food, and environment they provided definitely helped in comforting us during this situation. This was a great all around coffee shop with a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. Staff was very helpful in answering questions and offering suggestions. I kept it simple with a caramel cold brew and a bagel but there is a huge list of coffee flavors to choose from as well as a decent amount of cafe style food items. I'd be interested to test the barista skill of the employees. There was also a variety of fresh coffee beans and other artisanal items for sale in the shop. Only real negative was the difficult and limited parking, which is understandable given the location in the middle of downtown Lexington. read more

Love love Love this coffee shop. It's a beautiful craftsman house refurbished and renovated into a coffee shop downstairs. Each room is filled with beautiful fixtures and trinkets (most of which are for sale for reasonable prices) and upscale Southern charm, giving you a vintage antebellum south feel right when you walk in the door. You have many options for work spaces or lounging areas, from a cozy couch-filled living room, complete with a fireplace. I sit in the back when I'm in town and work on the quiet side porch, overlooking the post office. The owners are very personable and jovial and make the place feel like you are visiting relatives for the holidays. Not to mention it's dressed head-to-toe in festive decor for the holidays. Stopped by for a little post BBQ jolt. The Americano was pretty good but either the beans were a little old or the water wasn't filtered, something like that. It tasted good to start with but as it started to cool that's when it took on a different flavor. I bought a half pound of Columbian espresso beans, they smelled amazing. I ran a French press with them this evening, not great. Kind of bitter with a weird, almost drinking coffee grounds type of flavor. I French press multiple times a day so I know it wasn't my press, not sure about the beans but I'm not looking forward to the next cup. The coffee house is in downtown Lexington and is located in a really great old house. There are lots of great seating areas inside and out with multiple drip brew coffees available. I picked up a couple of muffins, a blueberry and apple...very tasty. I like the place but was not overjoyed with the java...I will probably try The Perfect Blend next time through to see what they have to offer. read more

I usually don't review places online, and most of the time take them with a grain of salt, (figured they are disgruntled employees or high maintenance people), but had too on this one. My daughter move down to Lexington, NC about a year ago and raved about the Black Chicken Coffee. I finally made it down to visit her and we went yesterday. I am back today because now I know why she loves it so much. Great coffee, espresso, great service, very friendly and they have many, many, MANY, choices of Frapuccinos! You can enjoy your drink or food, inside (in a few different rooms) or outside on the patio, and they have a small craft gift shop too. Highly recommend! read more
