My shoes had been in the shop for over six weeks, so I stopped by to check on progress. There was a man picking up a lined work belt, and they were charging him $150 for it. I get that it's two layers of leather, and the ten to twenty minutes it make it (I've made my own, it's not that much effort.....and OBTW you can get really great work belts from the "Amish" shops that are everywhere in this part of the country, or order from Lehmans) Waiting and watching this rip off completely destroyed any confidence I had in this shop. Instead of asking for a status, I asked to have my shoes back. No need to pay more than my shoes cost for a resole. read more

The good: nice folks. The not so good. Brought my boots in and only half the work was done when I picked them up had to bring them back for completion. When I picked them up they smelled like marijuanna so bad I couldn't stand them in my car on the way home. Made my car have a strong smell like pot. No wonder they didn't complete the job.? read more

Spectacular place! A year ago I splurged on a pair of La Canadienne combat boots. After one season of heavy wear, the outside edges of the outsole on the heels were wearing down dangerously close to the heel block. La Canadienne customer service is useless when it comes to repair or even recommending a repair place. So imagine my delight to find BKB Leather, in my hometown of Lawrence, KS, on stitchdown.com's list of the best cobblers in the country for boot repair. When I came home for Thanksgiving I brought them in; received excellent customer service on intake, and four days later got my boots back with gorgeous, new, durable soles on the heels of my boots, which had also been cleaned and polished. The proprietor is friendly and obviously takes pride in his work. I will never use another shoe repair place. 15/10 highly recommend. read more

Very nice folks in a somewhat ramshackle but wholly endearing cobbler shop, attached to a house in a purely residential part of North Lawrence. Serious about shoe repair and shoe care. And the only game in town. As you might expect, labor costs and the lack of competition make BKB not a cheap option (ask yourself: are these shoes worth fixing or would I be better off buying a new pair?). Also worth noting that, unless you make special arrangements, it may take a few _weeks_ for the work to be completed. That said, the work is well executed. read more

Wow! That pretty much sums up the entire experience. Presently I'm overseas and that in itself created an expected delay in communication. Not w/ Bkb, they were very attenuative to email communication. Both pair of my shoes had been worn pretty hard and some stich work was needed. New soles, heels, and a "spit" shine that would make the most disciplined hard charger of a G.I. blush w/ pride. Even though the process on my end wasn't smooth as any customer would want, Bkb was accommodating. Price was fair and expected for services. I admit, this was my first time visiting a cobbler, so I really don't know what to expect, but I had a great experience here. I had purchased a pair of expensive leather shoes on clearance, and they ended up being way too small in the toe. Sadly, being on clearance, there were no shoes left in the next higher size. But I *loved* these shoes, and had read somewhere about stretching. I then turned to Yelp, and found this gem. I was a bit worried, since stretched shoes cannot be returned, and again, these were a bit pricey. I was not looking forward to the prospect of having to E-Bay messed up shoes, but loved the design of these enough to take a chance. I'm so glad I did! I drove out to North Lawrence, and came upon his shop. It is pleasant just to go there. It reminds me a bit of a tack shop, I guess, which reminds me of my childhood. That aside, it's cute. I went in, and was taken care of right away. If no one is visible, there is a bell on the door you can ring. I explained my predicament, and he seemed clearly well-versed in such issues. He gave me an estimate of about a week turnaround and ~$15 charge. I was so joyous! I'm guessing the turnaround time for my work was short, since it was perhaps an easier, less time-intensive repair. Sure enough, he called a week later and I picked up my shoes, and they fit like a dream! Again, I was joyous. They also looked just fine; I was a bit worried about the effect stretching might have on them, but I noticed no marring of any sort. He was a pleasure to work with, and it sounds like he does all sorts of shoe repair and also other leather good repair and cleaning - check out his website for more info. I may bring some of my ill-fitting belts for help. One thing to be prepared for - when he called with the official price of my work, he asked for cash or check, so it sounds like credit cards may not be an option. *One note to anyone considering stretching, the shoe fit me fine lengthwise heel-toe, the toe was just very small in width. It sounds like changing the length is not so easy, so stretching is moreso for adjusting the width of a shoe. But I'm not the expert, take them here and ask for sure! read more

He did a fantastic job on my favorite pair of cowboy boots! My dog got a hold of them and chewed up the toe pretty badly. 1 week and $90 later they look like nothing ever happened. Excellent customer service! I went in with a little sewing shoe repair and a belt that needed some new holes. The owner only charged me for the shoe repair. Upon learning that they do not accept credit cards, I only had 7 dollars of the 10. The owner was kind enough to take my 7. In addition, he did the repairs on the spot, since they were so simple. AMAZING work and well worth it. Really cool set up as well. The yard, building, people, everything is warm, eclectic, and welcoming. read more

Bkb does damn good work. The owner can really fix just about anything. Broken heal? Yep. New heel caps? Simple. Discoloring? Sure. His availability (not with respect to hours but with respect to communication) isn't the best, but he does the best cobble-work you'll be able to find in Lawrence and maybe even in Kansas City. read more

So glad I found this place! I got a giant water stain on one of my suede boots (and of course didn't have any kind of protection spray on them either) and I was really afraid it would be permanently darker than the rest of the suede, but they did a great job of making both shoes look as good as new - probably better than new really! I also had them dye the edges of a black vintage leather/beaded belt that was looking a little rough, and it looks amazing now too. It is a bit pricier than some other cobblers I've been to in the past, and like previous reviews said it might take a few weeks for them to get to your items, but for some things it's just worth it! I bought a fairly expensive pair of suede boots in NC early fall and had them shipped to me. When I received them one boot had a significant amount of what looked like glue on it that wasnt there when i tried them on in the store. Instead of sending them back to the shoe store i took them to Bkb leather. Bruce, the owner, felt confident that he could remove the glue. Not only did he remove the glue but he did it on the spot while I waited! I paid him even though he was probably not going to charge me for the work. Unfortunately I must rate BKB only two stars for my recent experience. The 2nd star is only for decent customer service from family member working front counter. I got quote on reappolstering a chair and resole of one pair dress shoes. The owner told me he could have the chair done in approximately 4-6 weeks as I was moving out of town then. Picked up the chair after 6 weeks time elapsed, and no work had been done other than he said he set up the cut pattern. Though the shoes were done after about 6 weeks , within one month the glue holding the new soles came loose and shoes couldn't be worn. Waste of 90 dollars. read more

We took in a new leather chair cushion that our cat had scratched deeply with three of her longest claws. The depth of the cuts and the interesting maroon color left me thinking the chair was a total loss. You can hardly tell where the cuts were. Bruce and sidekick, Glenn, do exceptional work. I recently brought in a pair of favorite, leather slippers for which Bruce recommended a certain type of sole to cover the original leather that had worn thin. I was concerned how they might change the feel...no problem...magnificent. They look and feel as good as ever. After that I brought in a pair of my wife's shoes with heels she wears for work that needed new tips on the heels, perfecto, and included in the price, Bruce also repaired the toes that were wearing thin and even separating. My wife loves the work and called Bruce specifically to thank him. And I shouldn't mention the quick turn-around, since I don't know how often they can do it, but my wife really needed these shoes and the guys helped get my wife back up on her feet in no time!
