Honestly, I've never been a guest at this facility, but given how poorly I was treated when I visited to inquire, I don't forsee I ever will be.
I've got a very large extended family, and on a recent stay at a nearby cabin my sister, mother, and I happened upon this center while taking a walk.
Thinking it looked like a big enough place to house all of us, and noting the chapel (we're Roman Catholic), we decided to take a closer look. There were cars in the parking lot, so we planned to just look at the outside so as not to disturb anyone. We happened upon the cafeteria first, and a glance in the window revealed that it was not currently in use. When we peeked in the window, we noticed a young man sitting in the back, so we smiled and waved and he smiled and waved back.
After noting that the size of the cafeteria/kitchen was plenty big for our tribe, we moved on. The next building was the chapel, and we could hear as we approached that there was a service going on, so we proceeded past as quietly as possible. Shortly after we reached the end of the building, a voice called out from behind us. We turned and there was a gentleman in an apron standing just outside of the chapel door. He threw his hands up in a sort of 'what are you doing here?' kind of way.
We wished him a good morning, to which he replied "why are you here?". We explained that we were just looking at the facility, and he replied that it was a "private, CHRISTIAN retreat center and not open to the public" (please note the emphasis on the word Christian was his, not mine).
We replied with apologies, explaining that we didn't realize we couldn't be there, but were simply looking around as it appeared as thought it might be ideal for our family reunion. His reply was to assert that they wouldn't accept any groups of less than 30. We explained that our extended family is around 150 people, then again apologized for trespassing and assured him we'd leave right away.
Only after he realized we were potential paying customers did his demeanor change. He never apologized for his unwelcoming behavior, but offered to go get his wife so she could discuss our interest in using the facility. We thanked him, but said we realized he was clearly busy and we didn't want to impose. He insisted we wait for him to go get her, and again we respectfully declined, and left the property.
I'm not sure how this facility is as a retreat center. For all I know, they could have amazing retreats. However, simply based on the very unchristian way they receive strangers, I'll not be visiting again to find out. read more
