Sometimes it is the staff and attitude that sets things part, and this is true for this venue. The folks are friendly, accommodating and have the right attitude. I confess. I did something I was not supposed to do. I was a skofflaw, even if by accident. AND I got "caught". My bad. They handled it all with humor and grace and were accommodating. It can get intense when you find out that some of the sites were not perserved. If you decide to do the self guided tour, you should buy the book at the tour office. The book adds depth to the tour and helps you navigate the sites. Portsmouth is a lovely town and very friendly. Grab lunch or dinner while you are on the tour.

Kevin even stayed in character when greeted by his actual name! History buffs will love this tour! Jack described parts of the city as he would have loved it... stopping periodically along this 2.5 mile tour to describe what we were seeing. Much better than if we just did it self guided looking at plaques on buildings. As an African American couple, we came away with an experience we won't read in the history books or long soon forget. Will definitely visit the BH trail website the next time we are in the area to see what they've got in store in the future.
